The Blue Bird is a 1908 play by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck (1862 -1949), winnerf the Nbel Prize in Literature in 1911. Maeterlinck wrte many plays, but The Blue Bird was the mst ppular and has been widely translated and adapted all ver the wrld.
Perfrmed in 1921 in Shanghai by Chinese students, it was the first freign play staged in China. The Blue Bird tells the tale f brther and sister, Tyltyl and Mytyl, as they are sent by a fairy t search
fr the Blue Bird f Happiness. The children’s adventure takes them thrugh many magical places befre they at last find the Blue Bird in a mst unexpected place.

ACT IV SCENE II
Tyltyl, (Mytyl,) a trp f Happinesses, the Happiness
Nw read the passage and cmplete the ntes with infrmatin frm the play.
Tyltyl and Mytyl have been searching fr theBlue Bird in the Land f Memry, the Palace fNight and the Frest. Nw they have arrived atthe Palace f Happiness. A trp f Happinessesrush int the hall and speak t them.
The children cme t the Palace f Happiness and are welcmed by a trp f Happinesses. The children d nt recgnise them, but the Happinesses tell them that they are the nly things the children knw and they are all arund them. Tyltyl wnders whether
there are Happinesses in his hme, and at this mment, all the Happinesses burst ut laughing. The chief f the Happinesses tells him that his hme is filled with Happinesses. The chief intrduces himself t Tyltyl as the Happiness f Being Well, and then intrduces him
t ther Happinesses: f Pure Air, f Lving One’s Parents, f the Blue Sky and f the Frest. Tyltyl just wants t ask the Happinesses ne thing: the whereabuts f the Blue Bird.
ACT VI SCENE II
Tyltyl, (Mytyl,) Mummy Tyl, the neighbur Berlingt, the little girl
Unable t find the Blue Bird anywhere, the children return hme. While they are trying t tell their parents abut their adventures, their neighbur cmes in. She is asking fr Tyltyl’s bird fr her sick little girl.
ACT VI SCENE II
The children return hme withut finding theBlue Bird.The neighbur Berlingt, a little ld wman,enters Tyltyl’s hme, leaning n a stick.
Berlingt is telling Mummy Tyl that Tyltyl’s birdis the ne thing that will cure her sick daughter.Tyltyl then sees that his bird is blue – much bluerthan when he went away. Tyltyl gives his bird t his neighbur.…
The little girl cmes alng and thanks Tyltyl, butas Tyltyl ges t take the bird t shw the littlegirl hw t feed him, the bird flies away.The little girl lets ut a cry f despair. Tyltyl
cmfrts her and turns t the audience. He asks the audience t return the Blue Bird if they see him, fr the bird is needed fr their future happiness.

The Blue Bird is a typical full-length play, which means it has several acts and each act is cmpsed f several scenes. The whle play depicts actins that take place ver a lng perid f time. Varius characters appear in different acts and scenes, and the settings and cstumes change accrdingly. The running time f a full-length play can last fr several hurs, even days.
