    The disease malaria (疟疾) has caused mankind truble thrughut histry. In the 1860s as the drug called chlrquine began t lse its effectiveness, malaria began t appear again in Sutheast Asia. Every cuntry in the wrld then pured large quantities f human resurces int discvering anther antimalarial drug. In 1964, China put frward the plan t break new grund in traditinal Chinese medicinal herbs. There was n great discvery until 1981, when Chinese scientist Tu Yuyu gave a speech titled “Chemical Research int Artemisinin (青蒿素) ” at an internatinal cnference f the WHO. The speech was regarded as a lifeline fr malaria sufferers.
    Tu Yuyu graduated frm Peking University Health Science Center. In 1969, just as the research int treating malaria had reached a dead end, 39-year-ld Tu, in rder t vercme this terrible prblem, tk n the jb as head f a research team f this prblem. The first thing Tu did was interview experienced dctrs f Chinese medicine. Then she and her clleagues cnducted varius kinds f experiments n hundreds f kinds f Chinese medicinal herbs, including the artemisia. Hwever, the results were disappinting; even thse invlving artemisinin, which had been universally well-regarded, were less than satisfactry.
    But later, when Tu fund a relevant passage written by Ge Hng f the Tsin Dynasty, it ccurred t her that high temperatures destry artemisinin’s effectiveness; it needs a lw temperature t wrk prperly. The discvery helped Tu and her research team t think utside the bx. Finally, in 1972, artemisinin was fund t be ne hundred percent effective against the disease!
    In 2000 WHO annunced artemisinin was a leading antimalarial drug, and prmted it wrldwide. S far, it has been playing a great rle in the battle against malaria. At the age f 39, Tu began t devte her life t her research. In 2015, at the age f 85, she received the Nbel Prize in Physilgy r Medicine. Hw did Tu manage t accmplish such a great achievement? As a teacher at BFSU she laid the fundatins f freign language educatin in China.
    As tw f the first three freign teachers at the schl, Isabel and David Crk brught new Western teaching methdlgies t the classrm. Michael Crk nted that since sme students were extremely pr during the 1950s and 1960s, his parents were especially sensitive t their harsh situatin and did what they culd t help them while prtecting their self-esteem.
