When the Ntre Dame Paris cathedral(巴黎圣母院)was n fire, it seemed as if the natin had lst a piece f its sul. A similar tragedy tk place in the 19th-century Russia. And the rebuilding effrt f the Russians might ffer sme inspiratin t the French.
Standing in the heart f the Russian capital, with 60, 000 square meters f flr space and 1, 500 rms, the Winter Palace was amng the wrlds grandest buildings. On Dec.17, 1837, a fire brke ut in the Winter Palace. By the mrning f Dec.19, nly the structure’s framewrk remained.
Fr the czar(沙皇), the fire presented a plitical challenge. Fearing that Russia’s enemies wuld cast the fire as a blw t the czarist rder the czars supprters quickly wrked tgether t shape the descriptin f the fire in Russia and abrad. They wanted the cuntry t appear united. And they certainly didn’t want despair t becme the stry.
The first full accunt f the fire was written in French by the pet Petr Viazemskii. A Russian translatin appeared tw mnths later. That text and thers painted a highly idealized picture f the respnse t the tragedy. The accunts nted that the czar frcefully directed the fire’s cntainment(控制).Sldiers were selfless t save the palace. The Russian peple felt the lss just as deeply as the czar. Twer Bridge is a bascule bridge in Lndn, ver the River Thames. It is clse t the Twer f Lndn which gives it its name. It is incrrectly referred t as Lndn Bridge, which is the next bridge upstream(在上游).It is ne f five Lndn bridges nw wned and maintained by the Bridge Huse Estates.
