The two granite boulders(花岗岩石),known as the Dinnie Stones together weigh nearly 332.5 kg.Ninety men have lifted them since their rediscovery in 1953.They are named after Donald Dinnie, who carried them across Potarch Bridge in 1860.Just one woman,Jan Todd, lifted them in 1979.Leigh Holland-Keen became only the second woman to do it.She said,“It was fantastic, quite an emotional experience.I felt crazy to be able to do that, and having the crowd being so positive created an amazing atmosphere.”
Holland-Keen,29,who is an Australian nurse, was inspired by her mother and stepfather’s love of weight training, and started going to the gym when she was only about 14.She first attempted to lift the stones last year, while accompanying her mother and stepfather who had come to try it (her stepfather successfully lifted them in 2009).She hadn’t expected to attempt to lift them and hadn’t trained for it,but couldn’t pass the opportunity up.“I tried it and was very close,so I thought maybe I could actually do these within the next couple of years,” she says.“My mum and I made it our goal to train and get these up.”
She also says,“The appeal of weightlifting is in not giving up.It’s good to constantly challenge yourself. If you can’t lift it up the first time you try,it’s something to work towards. You keep persevering and then you can do it.It feels good to achieve it.Training can go so well and then on the day anything can happen. If I did make it,it would be fantastic. If I didn’t,I would just come back next year and try again.”
Holland-Keen borrowed some replica(复制品) Dinnie Stones rings and loaded them with weights and trained in her garage three to four times a week, for up to two hours at a time. She says,“It’s getting better but there is a common myth that if you lift heavy weights, you’re going to look very manly.”
24.Why are the two granite boulders called the Dinnie Stones?
    A.Because they are very heavy.
    B.Because they are very famous.
C.Because they belong to Donald Dinnie.
D.Because they are named after Donald Dinnie.
根据第一段第三句“They are named after Donald Dinnie, who carried them across Potarch Bridge in 1860.”
25.Who influenced Holland-Keen in trying to lift the two granite boulders?
    A.Her mother and stepfather.
    B.Her gym coach.
    C.Donald Dinnie.
    D.Jan Todd.
    答案A
根据第二段第一句“Holland-Keen,29,who is an Australian nurse, was inspired by her mother and stepfather’s love of weight training...”

26.What made Holland-Keen successfully lift the Dinnie Stones?
    A.Honesty. B.Inspiration.
    C.Perseverance. D.Confidence.
根据第三段中Holland-Keen所说的话“You keep persevering and then you can do it.”以及“If I didn’t,I would just come back next year and try again.”
27.From the passage we can learn that Holland-Keen is .
    A.warm-hearted and easy-going
    B.strong-willed and hard-working
    C.sweet-tempered and good-looking
    D.cold-blooded and tired-looking
    答案B

Many Westerners have the idea that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu.This is,of course,a silly belief. But it is true that kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
Like most people from the West,I was first introduced to kung fu through Hong Kong action films.Stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan made kung fu popular in the Western world. The flashy and impressive performances they gave in films like Rumble in the Bronx and Enter the Dragon made them household names in the U.S.and elsewhere.
However,my own personal interest in kung fu was actually inspired by a hip hop group.Wu-Tang Clan, founded in the early 1990s in New York City,is one of the most influential hip hop groups in history.
In their songs, they sometimes mention philosophical concepts that come from Wudang quan — a classic Chinese martial art from which they take their name — and Shaolin Temple.I was just a teenager when I first started listening to Wu-Tang Clan — little did I know that I would actually end up living in China later in my life!
I myself do not practice kung fu.However, the concepts behind it are quite interesting to me.There is a Bruce Lee quote that I often think of when I’m struggling with challenges in life.“Be formless, shapeless, like water,” he once said.By this,he meant that you should be ready to adapt to and change your attitudes or beliefs when you face difficulties.I think this is a good way to deal with life.
28.What does the phrase“a silly belief” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.All Chinese people can do kung fu.
B.China is most famous for its kung fu.
C.Kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
    D.Many Westerners admire kung fu.
    答案A
根据第一段中的“Many Westerners have the idea that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu.This is,of course,a silly belief.”
29.What inspired the author’s interest in kung fu?
    A.Hong Kong action movies.
B.A TV program about kung fu.
    C.Kung fu stars in Hollywood.
    D.A U.S. hip hop group.
30.What do we know about the Wu-Tang Clan?
A.They have Chinese culture in their songs.
B.They taught the author how to do Wudang quan.
C.They performed Chinese martial arts in the U.S.
D.They showed the author the way to live in China.
    答案A
31.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The author was sorry that he couldn’t do kung fu.
B.The concepts of kung fu change over time.
C.The spirit of kung fu helps the author overcome difficulties.
D.Bruce Lee was the most popular martial arts master.
    D
While visiting the North Pole in winter may not be at the top of your bucket list, the ever-changing ICEHOTEL,which opened its doors to visitors on December 14 this year, may change your mind.200 km north of the Arctic Circle in the Swedish village of Jukkasjarvi, the hotel, which is carved entirely from ice,is rebuilt annually.
The 35 rooms, built to accommodate visitors on all kinds of budgets, vary from expensive suites to basic rooms that are furnished with just an icy bed and a reindeer skin.Among the highlights this year is the “Spruce Woods” suite.Sculpted by Christopher Pascoe and Jennie O’Keefe of Canada,it describes a camping scene complete with a classic microbus,a forest, and even an artificial campfire.
There is also the artfully-carved “Living Ocean” suite to remind visitors of the importance of saving our oceans. The room is full of carved sea life that includes coral and a shark “swimming” right over the ice bed.“The suite is inspired by global warming and the overfishing that affects our oceans,” says artist Jonathan Paul Green.“I also think the idea of using frozen water from a river in northern Sweden to create an ocean with shells, fish, and coral is exciting.”
The nearby “Haven” suite is a “magical gate of ice” guarded by two large animals.“We are inspired by the meeting between people and want to create an experience that stimulates curiosity and creativity,”says artist Jonas Johansson.“It feels like a dream to get to work with ice that allows our love for light, shine, and reflection to wander freely from thought to creation.”
Regardless of whether visitors select the carved suites or the basic ice rooms, the temperature is always set to a bone-chilling-5 ℃! That is why guests are advised to snuggle (蜷伏) up inside sleeping bags and wear gloves and winter hats all night. Not surprisingly, most end up spending just a single night at this unique hotel before moving on to the conventional and warmer hotels nearby.

    B.Its rooms are expensive.
    C.It organizes camping activities.
D.It lies in a coastal city.

根据第三段第三句中的“The suite is inspired by global warming and the overfishing that affects our oceans”可知,这间套房的灵感来自全球变暖和影响海洋的过度捕捞,故C项正确。
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.An Adventure to the North Pole
    B.An Experience Close to Nature
C.A Taste of Cold:A Night in a Village
    D.A Winter Destination:Sweden’s Icehotel
根据全文内容,尤其是第一段第二句“200 km north of the Arctic Circle in the Swedish village of Jukkasjarvi, the hotel, which is carved entirely from ice,is rebuilt annually.”

A rock as big as a house. That’s how the guide-book described Giant Rock.Dad said it was carried here by a glacier (冰川) millions of years ago.
I was finally going to see it,on snowshoes, with my cousin Andrew,my dad,and my uncle Don.I’d been snowshoeing before, and I liked traveling through deep snow alongside wild animal tracks (足迹).
At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes,we studied the map.“We start here,” Dad said,“on the red trail (小路).Then we turn left onto the purple trail. That’s where Giant Rock is.”
“Remember to stick together, boys,” Uncle Don said.
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall.It was easy to follow because red markers were stuck onto the trees. At the top of the hill,we turned onto the purple trail.Dad and everyone else were in front and I was in the back.My cousin was faster than I was,but I managed to catch up.
The late afternoon sun felt warm, although it was going down.I saw lots of animal tracks — mostly rabbit prints. As we carried on up the trail.Andrew said what I’d been thinking,“Will we ever reach Giant Rock?Do you think your dad invented the idea of Giant Rock just to get us away from the TV for a while?”
    I laughed.“You never know.”
Finally,we reached the top of a hill and saw the large rock sitting alone in the forest.
“It really is as big as a house!” Andrew said.
Standing in the rock’s long shadow (影子),I noticed the sun had got even lower.
“Let’s head back,” Dad said after a few minutes.
Soon we were on our way home.I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animal tracks. They were hard to see among the snowshoe prints,so I followed them off the trail for a closer look. They looked like tiny handprints and footprints.Must be a raccoon (浣熊) I thought, matching them to prints in my guide.
When I looked up,I suddenly realized I was totally alone.

Then I came to a crossroads.

When I looked up,I suddenly realized I was totally alone.“Hey!” I shouted.“Where is everyone?” Nothing, just the sound of my own breathing. They couldn’t have gone far,I thought, stepping onto the trail.I would catch up with them if I hurried. It seemed to grow darker.I had no flashlight. No phone. My mind started to race.Soon it might be too dark to tell what color the markers were.I couldn’t just follow my own footsteps because there were so many tracks from other travelers.
Then I came to a crossroads. Which way should I turn?I pictured the map.To reach Giant Rock we had turned left onto the purple trail. To get back,I needed to do the opposite and turn right onto the red trail. If this didn’t work,I’d stay put and let my group find me.Then I heard someone calling and noticed the stone wall and the trail running alongside it.This had to be right.I went down the hill in large steps. Then I saw the parking area and my family!I shouted as I ran toward them.
