Jn Krakauer
Krakauer was brn in Brkline, Massachusetts, as the third f five children f Carl Ann and Lewis Jseph Krakauer. His father was Jewish and his mther was a Unitarian, f Scandinavian descent. He was raised in Crvallis, Oregn, frm the age f tw. His father intrduced the yung Krakauer t muntaineering at the age f eight. His father placed high expectatins n Krakauer, wishing fr his sn t attend Harvard Medical Schl and becme a dctr. He cmpeted in tennis at Crvallis High Schl and graduated in 1972. He went n t study at Hampshire Cllege in Massachusetts, where in 1976 he received his degree in Envirnmental Studies. In 1977, he met frmer climber Linda Mariam Mre, and they married in 1980.They lived in Seattle, Washingtn, but mved t Bulder, Clrad, after the release f Krakauer’s bk Int Thin Air.
After graduating frm cllege, Krakauer spent three weeks alne in the wilderness f the Stikine Icecap regin f Alaska and climbed a new rute n the Devils Thumb, an experience he described in Eiger Dreams and in Int the Wild. In 1992, he made his way t Cerr Trre in the Andes f Patagnia—a sheer granite peak cnsidered t be ne f the mst difficult technical climbs in the wrld.
In 1996, Krakauer tk part in a guided ascent f Munt Everest. His grup was ne f thse caught in the 1996 Munt Everest disaster, in which a vilent strm trapped a number f climbers high n the slpes f the muntain. Krakauer reached the peak and returned t camp, but fur f his teammates (including grup leader Rb Hall) died while making their descent in the strm.
A candid recllectin f the event was published in Outside magazine and, later, in the bk Int Thin Air. By the end f the 1996 climbing seasn, fifteen peple had died n the muntain, making it the deadliest single year in Everest histry t that pint.
