It’s bvius that plastic pllutin is a big prblem nwadays. Luckily, researchers have fund a chemical frm a kind f wrm can degrade ne f the mst cmmn frms f plastic. The finding culd pen up new ways t deal with the prblem.
There have been several studies shwing micrrganisms can release enzymes (酶) that cause the plastic plyethylene (聚乙烯) t start t change. But that prcess takes a lng time. The recently-discvered enzymes were fund in the saliva (唾液) f the wax wrm mth. They appear t act in nly a few hurs.
Federica Bertcchini is ne f the researchers wh helped write a study n the finding. She is als a beekeeper. Bertcchini said that ne year she fund her hneycmbs full f wax wrms. Hneycmbs are built by bees t stre hney. She cleaned the hneycmbs and put the wrms in a plastic bag. When she returned, she fund the bag was full f hles. All this made her wnder if the wrms were eating the plastic r if there was a chemical reactin that caused the hles, leading t the idea f the research.
“We checked that, ding prper lab experiments, and we fund the plyethylene had been xidized (氧化),” she said.
In her latest research, Bertcchini and her cwrkers identified tw enzymes in the wrm’s saliva. The enzymes appeared t break dwn plyethylene in nly a few hurs at rm temperature. Bertcchini says her team is still trying t understand hw the wrms deal with the plastic. She adds, hpefully in the future, the enzymes can be used in hmes, where each family culd deal with their wn plastic waste.
