Football star Jason Brown retired abruptly from the NFL(美国国家橄榄球大联盟) in 2012 in order to deal with something bigger than anything he'd faced on a football field:sweet potatoes.
Brown, then 29,moved with his wife,Tay,and their children from Missouri, where he'd played with the St.Louis Rams, back home to North Carolina, where he bought 1,000 acres in Louisburg.Overnight,he went from football star to family farmer.“For most people,it doesn't make sense—why would you leave an awesome NFL career?” he says.

Can you imagine living without cars, computers or telephones? Some people in the rain forest and mountains of Venezuela and Brazil do just that. One tribe(部落),the Yanomami, has lived the same way for thousands of years. They only have numbers for one,two and more than two,and they have never invented the wheel. But they have also been called some of “the last free people on earth”.
In the late 1920s,researchers found a tribe of people untouched by modern society. This was the first reported meeting with the Yanomami, who were living deep within the South American jungle.
Scientists agree that their location deep in the forest helped their culture unchanged.Until recently, most Yanomami still lived in isolated regions.Everything they needed came from the rain forest. They hunted, fished and farmed the land. Then a discovery brought the outside world to them. And along with it came deadly changes.
Gold was discovered in Yanomami in the 1970s.By 1987,around 80,000 miners had moved into the area.In a fight to take over the land, they killed some Yanomami. They also brought into new sicknesses, including the common cold and malaria(疟疾).Today over 62 percent of Yanomami show signs of malaria.
Just as deadly were the results of mining, including polluted streams and cleared forests.Within just seven years their population fell by 20 percent.
Today governments and international organizations are looking for ways to protect the Yanomami. The Brazilian government has reserved a large area of land for the tribe. And in 1990,Brazil ordered all the miners out of Amazon region.Yet these things might not be enough.Gold is so valuable that miners keep going back and harming the Yanomami's way of life.

For as many as 8,000 years before European contact, the San Juan Islands were unhabited by the Northern Straits Salish people and other native people seasonally, preserving food in summer for winter spent elsewhere. All were drawn to the islands by the abundance of food and materials found here.
In the mid1800s,a company came to the San Juan Islands following its numerous international trade routes. One employee, known as “Friday”,settled alone in the area of what is now the town of Friday Harbor. This caused many to refer to the place as “Friday's Harbor”.
By 1900,Friday Harbor had a population of only three or four hundred.Roads and telephone networks linked the town to the rest of the island. The community was growing and many public facilities (设施) had been added. What these buildings had in common was the simplicity of design. They were attractive and functional, but without complex decoration.Typically, both residential and commercial buildings were built with local wood.Money was not so plentiful that it could not be used for the unnecessary, and so most buildings were painted white, more for functional protection against rot, than for decoration. The town wore a poor look until the 1970s,when tourism, retirement, real estate (房地产),construction, the arts and a variety of cottage industries began to take hold.Today, the town is busy and booming.
Though the traditional industries have all vanished, there are still many visible reminders of the pioneer era—100yearold orchards (果园),kitchen gardens, turnofthecentury wooden buildings and companionable rooflines, and all local islanders and visitors alike with Friday Harbor's spirited early days.

For nearly 50 years,Zhao Yuming has been absorbed in his own world of clay figurines(泥塑).At age 62,Zhao is the only remaining clay sculpture master craftsman in Laoting County,Hebei Province. He has been officially recognised as a master of intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产). 16 This is more of a responsibility and a source of pressure.
17 In ancient times,Laoting clay figurines were mainly children's toys made by countryside artists. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949,there were several workshops in villages in Laoting County and the production reached a high level, but the prices were too low. 18 However, for a long period, many clay artists relied on making and selling clay figurines at those poor prices to make ends meet.
Nowadays, shopping malls are full of highend toys,so the Laoting clay figurines have gradually fallen out of favor. 19 Zhao said that although his children have other jobs to feed their families,he still wants to pass on his skills to them and his grandchildren.“If we do not pass it on,we will do a disservice to our country.Passing on the skills, honoring ourselves and repaying the country is the best option.”
Facing a demand for economic development, many regions are increasingly attaching importance to the protection of valuable traditional cultural skills.People come to realise that developing our cultural relics promotes the development of local economies. 20

Students should be able to show what they know. Many folks take this as a serfevident truth. But I think it demands closer examination.
Possessing a skill or piece of knowledge is not the same thing as being able to show it.This is why many smart young people hate school.Understanding, figuring out,and getting a handle on a piece of knowledge is really exciting, but having to prove to somebody else that you understand is a big fat pain in the neck.
Finding proof of student learning is a huge part of the teacher's job,and whether it is done poorly or not makes all the difference in that teacher's effectiveness. There is a huge difference between “How do I figure out if this student understands” and “How do I make this student prove to me he gets it.” The first is a valuable approach;the second is the first step on the road toward wasting everybody's time.
And there's the problem. If we start with the assumption (假设) that a student who knows must be able to show his knowledge to our satisfaction,we will be traveling down the wrong road. The more we demand that students prove to us that they know the stuff, the more we will design artificial tasks that demand a set of skills and knowledge entirely different from the skills and knowledge we really want to measure.
As a classroom teacher,I have to remember that the burden is on me to find a way to see what my students know;the burden is not on them to put on whatever trained monkey show I design for my own ease and convenience.
It may not be the worst thing ever to say that students should be able to show what they know. But I think it's far more useful to say that teachers should be able to discover what students know.

The United States Department of Agriculture has a program called Wildlife Services. Its job is to help protect agriculture and other resources from threats and damage by wildlife.Often that means helping farmers deal with unwelcome visitors. This organization has experts from different fields and it has set up thousands of inquiry agencies all over the country where farmers can explain their difficulty and get practical help.
One example from Wildlife Services of its work involved a farmer in Washington State,in the Pacific Northwest.Several years ago, thousands of Canada geese landed on his fields. The geese began to eat his carrot crop.Biologists from the program suggested that the farmer use noisemaking devices and other measures to scare the large birds away. These efforts apparently succeeded, which made the farmer quite happy.
Wildlife Services also has a livestock(牲畜) protection program. The program just offers suggestions to keep those unwelcome visitors away instead of killing them.Experts suggest providing secure shelter for chickens, sheep and other animals that could be attacked. They also suggest using lights above places where animals are kept. And they advise people who see coyotes around their property to chase them away by shouting, making loud noises or throwing rocks. For home gardeners,a twometer fence might help keep out deer.To keep out rabbits,a wire fence has to be only about a halfmeter high.It should extend fifteen centimeters underground to keep rabbits from digging under it.If snakes are a problem, remove dead trees and cut high grass to destroy their hiding places. And to protect livestock, consider using guard animals such as dogs and donkeys, which are very effective.Due to its effective work, ever since the Wildlife Services was started,it has been well received by farmers all over the States and neighboring countries such as Canada and Mexico.

Scientists first noticed something was up in a study that compared two similar groups:transit drivers, who sit most of the day,and conductors or guards, who don't.Though their diets and lifestyles were a lot alike, those that sat were about twice as likely to get heart disease as those that stood.
Sitting too much may increase the risk of dying prematurely.Even if you work out 7 hours a week—far more than the suggested 2~3 hours—you can't reverse(逆转) the effects of sitting 7 hours at a time.Don't throw away all that hard work at the gym by hitting the couch for the rest of the day.Keep moving!
The seated position puts huge stress on your body, including back muscles, neck, and spine.Look for an ergonomic chair-that means it'll be the right height and support your back in the proper spots. But remember:no matter how comfortable you get, your back still won't like a long sitting session.Get up and move around for a minute or two every half hour to keep your spine in line.
You may be more likely to get cancer. The more you sit,the higher the chances are.Older women have higher chances of getting breast cancer. That doesn't change if you're superactive. What matters is how much you sit.
Then,to be healthy, you need to know how to take a stand.Work more movement into your day.Stand up and stretch every half hour or so.Touch your toes.Take a stroll around the room.Stand at your desk for part of the day.Set your computer on top of a box.All these things can help stop the negative effects of uninterrupted sitting and keep you on the road to good health.

What's next after the smartphone?
Humans can perform tricks today that magicians couldn't have imagined 50 years ago. Armed with only a tiny device today, our smartphones allow us to access a lifetime's worth of information, connect with anyone in real time even if they are miles away and perform complex tasks like drawing a floor plan within minutes. But the most astonishing part of this technological “magic” is the speed at which new opportunities and experiences are emerging.
From generation to generation, we have seen the inevitable connection between humans and technology as new technology is adopted to serve us and improve our quality of life. And the rate of technological progress is doubling every year.
Twenty years ago, who would have thought that we would be walking with robots and cyborgs? With the advancement of technology, we humans are accepting digital technology to improve and extend our senses and capabilities.
Take Moon Ribas and Neil Harbisson for example. They are the founders of the Cyborg Foundation, which aims to help humans become cyborgs, defend the rights of cyborgs and promote cyborgism as a social and artistic movement. Both Ribas and Harbisson are cyborgs, with Ribas having a seismic chip(地震芯片) put into her arm so she can feel earthquakes all around the world in real time and Harbisson, who is colorblind, has an antenna (天线) put into his head to allow him to be aware of visible and invisible colors via sound waves.
This is only the beginning of beginnings. As we continue to spend more time with machines, they will become more embedded in our lives. Technology already feels as if it had a mind of its own, and over the next two decades, this will become even more pronounced.
Machines will eventually become as intelligent as us, and, while today they may just live in our pockets, tomorrow they could be in our blood stream and our minds, linking us to the cloud. And as this gap separating humans and machines continues to close, we will reach a point where we become indistinguishable from one another. Technology and humanity will fuse (融合) together some day in the near future.

A supermarket checkout operator was praised for striking a blow for modern manners and a return to the age of politeness after refusing to serve a shopper who was talking on her mobile phone.
The supermarket manager was forced to apologize to the customer who complained she was told her goods would not be scanned unless she hung up her phone.Jo Clark,46,said,“I don't know what she was playing at.I couldn't believe how rude she was. When did she have the right to give me a lecture on checkout manners?I won't be shopping there again!”

Traffic Light Reading is one of students' favorites! And it's so simple. Here's what to do:Take three pens in different colors, most suitably red, orange and green. But it's not too important as long as teachers and students are both clear on the color code they're going to use.
Students read a text, not worrying too much about how much they understand.Teachers can ask them to reread when students are paying attention to vocabulary.Start by underlining the words that they understand completely (including names, numbers, etc.) in green.
Then students reread the text and underline the words that look familiar—they maybe know them but aren't too sure about them. You guessed it:in orange.
Finally, students read the text a third time underlining the words they clearly don't understand in red.Sometimes, teachers might want to set students a limit for how many red words they underline, telling them only to underline the words that they believe are seriously blocking their understanding of the text as a whole.Generally, however, students are pleasantly surprised by how few words are red and how many are green.Seeing their ability laid out in a visual way really helps to increase confidence.
Once the whole text is underlined, teachers can give students a limit of 5,10 or 15 words, depending on the length of the text, and tell them they're only allowed to look these words up in a dictionary. This helps them to recognize words that are actually getting in the way of their understanding of the text and words that they don't know but actually don't impact their whole understanding of the text.
This is a useful activity that can be done with a printed text,in a Google Doc,on RealtimeBoard,or set as a homework task for some independent study.

A city without cars would be very strange, right? But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands.Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so,travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go.People in Venice move from place to place by boat.
Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem.Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there's nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later,it's underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters.Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean melt.Every year, high water hits the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy's biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be built under the seawater to stop the rising water.Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.

British scientists, exploring a beach on the country's east coast, discovered what they believed were the oldest human footprints outside of Africa. They were estimated to be close to one million years old and were believed to be the oldest evidence of humans in northern Europe.
Footprints of a group of ancient humans were discovered on a beach in Norfolk,in eastern Britain. They may be about 500,000 years older than the earliest footprints previously found in the country. The 3D images and a model of one of the imprints(印记) were unveiled(透露) at a news conference at the British Museum,in London.
The museum's archaeologist Nick M Ashton described the moment when he realised the footprints were left by prehistoric men.“It was only when the overhead views were emailed to me back in my office that I immediately looked at it and opened up the file and I thought,‘This is absolutely amazing.’ You know, there was no doubt that they really were human footprints,” he said.
Nick said the new discovery would alter the understanding of early human history in Europe.A researcher of Liverpool John Moores University Isabelle de Groote analysed the prints.“The spread of the footprint size gave us an indication that there were children,a number of children and probably some adults there with at least one, probably one male,” she said.
It is not known how the early humans survived in the cold environment of ancient northern Europe.Scientists said a million years ago,Britain was joined to continental Europe and they believed that the individuals who left the footprints were related to Homosapiens' ancestors called the Pioneer Man,known to have inhabited in a warmer climate.

Popular music in America is what every student likes.Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch.Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.
Adult drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, and the life of American people. Most of the radio programmes are music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places.Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape. Some of the money from these tapes goes to the singer.Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her.Now the singer has become a national star.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans.Another is called western or country music. This is started by cowboys who would sing at night to the cows they are watching.Today, any music about country life and the love between a country boy and his girl is called western or country music.

Clear your purpose of reading.
17 Most people read for two main reasons, pleasure or knowledge.Clearing about your reading purpose can not only help you choose the books you really need to read, but also remind you why reading the book is important to you,so you will keep reading and complete the book faster.
18
No matter what you are reading,it is important to enjoy what you read.Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.
Give up books that you don't enjoy.
You may have chosen books that you are interested in,and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don't enjoy reading.Whenever you realize that you aren't enjoying the book you are reading, give it up. 19
Set a reading goal.
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is that the books I bought don't have a due date! I don't need to return those books. 20 Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要围绕着教师应该能够发现学生们知道的东西,而不是让学生证明他们知道的东西进行了阐述。

5.According to the third paragraph,a teacher should have the ability to .
A.discover whether his students know
B.avoid wasting the precious time in class
C.apply various approaches while teaching
D.give students the chance to prove themselves
A [细节理解题。根据第三段的内容尤其是第一句和最后一句可知,发现学生是否理解是教师应该具备的能力。故选A。]

A.They should be limited in number.
B.They are a huge burden on teachers.
C.They should mainly focus on effectiveness.

D [细节理解题。根据第四段中的“The more we demand that students prove to us that they know the stuff, the more we will design artificial tasks that demand a set of skills and knowledge entirely different from the skills and knowledge we really want to measure”可知,我们越要求学生向我们证明他们知道这些东西,我们就设计出更多人为的任务,这些任务要求的一套技能和知识完全不同于我们真正想要衡量的技能和知识。据此可知,作者认为这些任务背离了设计的初衷。故选D。]
7.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 6?

B.The authors tells us there are many ways to find proof of student learning.

D.The author tells us there should be a better understanding between teachers and students.

A.the farmer didn't have a gun to kill those Canada geese

C.Ms. William,who sits comfortably in a chair,works long as a typist.
D.Mrs. Glenn,who is a receptionist,takes a walk in the park 2 hours a day.

Hospitals in Southwest China's Sichuan Province for the first time used 5G technology for disaster medical rescue, after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit Changning county on 17 June,2019.This is the world's first case of applying 5G technology to disaster medical rescue.
According to the official Weibo account of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital,at 1:25 p.m. on 18 June,an ambulance equipped with a 5G emergency rescue system—the first of its kind in the country—carrying a medical team from Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital and engineers from China Mobile Sichuan Company and China Mobile (Chengdu) Industrial Research Institute assisting in the joint rescue efforts arrived at Changning County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).At around 9:30 pm,Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital launched a 5G realtime remote video consultation with its medical team on a patient admitted to Changning County Hospital of TCM for a suspected spleen rupture (脾脏破裂).
According to Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, the 5G emergency rescue system, which puts artificial intelligence (AI),augmented reality (增强现实),virtual reality and drone (无人机) applications together, allows a series of medical checks including blood tests, electrocardiograms and ultrasounds (心电图和超声波) to be given to patients right away. The information can then be transferred back to the hospital in real time, which greatly saves time in rescuing patients.
