    语境猜词的5个小技巧

    The Union Jack is the national flag of the United Kingdom.It is so called because it combines the emblems (象征) of three countries—England, Scotland and Ireland (although since 1921 only Northern Ireland has been part of the United Kingdom).

    The term “Union Jack” possibly dates from Queen Annes time, but its origin is uncertain.It may come from the “Jacket” of the English or Scottish soldiers; or from the name of James who originated the first union in 1603, in either its Latin or French form “Jacobus” or “Jacques”or, as “jack” once meant small, the name may come from a royal proclamation (声明) issued by Charles that the flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, a small flag at the bowsprit (船首).

    The Union Jack was originally a royal flag (when the present design was made official in 1801, it was ordered to be flown on all the Kings forts and castles, but not elsewhere); it is today flown above Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle when the Queen is not in residence.On news of a royal death, the Union Jack will be flown at half­mast (下半旗).

    The flying of the Union Jack on public buildings is decided by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport at the Queens command.The Union Jack is flown on government buildings on days marking the birthdays of members of the royal family, such as the Queens official birthday, and on the days of the State Opening and prorogation (休会) of Parliament; it is also flown on St Davids Day, St Georges Day, St Andrews Day, and St Patricks Day.

    Although the Union Jack originated as a royal flag, it is now also flown by many people and organizations elsewhere in the United Kingdom.Its use as an emblem has extended beyond the form of a flag and the Union Jack is frequently shown on other objects.

    Eton College is a British independent school for boys aged between 13 and 18.All the pupils board (寄宿).Founded in 1440 by King Henrythe school is located in Eton, near Windsor in England, north of Windsor Castle, and is one of the original nine English public schools as defined by the Public Schools Act 1868.

    The school has a very long list of famous former pupils, including 20 former prime ministers.Eton has been referred to as the chief nurse of Englands statesmen (政治家)and has been described as the most famous public school in the world.

    Most of Etons 1300 students enter the school at age 13.All candidates (参加考试的人) go through a pre­assessment (预评估) at age 11.The assessment includes an interview, a reasoning test and a report from the boys school he is in.Those offered conditional places must then pass the qualifying examination at age 13, or do well in the more challenging Kings Scholarship examination.

    The school is usually able to offer conditional places to about one third of the candidates at age 11.Others are placed on a waiting list to substitute anyone who may give up later.A small number of boys who have not got conditional places may enter at age 13 by winning a Kings Scholarship or Music Scholarship—both scholarships are highly competitive.

    The schools major aim is to encourage each Etonian to be a self­confident, inquiring, positive young man, a well­rounded character with an independent mind, and someone who respects the differences of others.By the time he leaves school, the school wants each boy to have a purpose greater than himself, and in doing so to be of value to society.
