A Dangerous Living
A red car comes roaring around a street comer chasing a blue car into oncoming traffic. Other cars try to dodge them Suddenly, the red car loses control, spins and then rolls over and over before coming to a stop on its hood The blue car speeds away.“Cut!”yells the director. A man climbs out of the red car and walks away unhurt;another successful stunt completed.
But too often stunt performers don’t walk away from their stunts unhurt Last September, British stuntman Richard Hammond nearly died when his jet-powered car crashed while going 280 mph Even though stunt performers plan each stunt carefully, considering both risk and safety, one small miscalculation can severely injure or kill a stunt performer.
Who wants such a dangerous job? Lots of people, according to stuntman Peter Hassell. He says about 10, 000 people a year try to break into the stunt industry in Los Angeles. Few make it. About 600 people-10-20 percent are women-work in the LA stunt industry, but only 200 make a full-time living at it. All newcomers must compete against these very talented, experienced people.

The social media trap of comparing yourself to others can lead to feelings of confusion and jealousy. That was certainly true for Lizzie Velasquez. “I will look at everyone’s photos and feel horrible about myself,” Velasquez says. “So I have made a rule for myself. If I’m on social media, when I start feeling like I’m falling down the rabbit hole of comparison, I have to stop.”
Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. “I suffered from a rare disease which doesn’t allow me to gain weight and also affects my eyes, my bones and my heart,” explains Velasquez.
Growing up, Velasquez said she lived in two different worlds. At home, her family treated her just like everyone else. Her parents raised her to appreciate herself. But that got harder when she started school. “I didn’t become aware of it until I started kindergarten, because I was entering this other world where I had to face the reality,” says Velasquez.
As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the YouTube video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation. Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. “I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez.
24. Where did Velasquez’s teenage pressure mainly come from?
A. Her tense relationships with her parents. B. Others’ criticism of her appearance.
C. Others’ concern about her disease. D. Her popularity on social media.
25. How can we describe Lizzie Velasquez?
A. Brave and inspiring. B. Talented and confident.
C. Sociable and popular. D. Caring and warm-hearted.
26. What did Velasquez do to fight online bullying?
A. Avoid using social media for a while.
B. Call on people to talk directly with the bullies.
C. Encourage the young to improve their taste in beauty.
D. Speak out against the behavior by sharing her experiences.
27. What does the author mainly tell us in the text?
A. The negative effects of online bullying.
B. A girl’s message about beauty and happiness.
C. The public’s attitude to online bullying among teenagers.
D. A story of turning pain into power against online bullying.
B 25. A 26. D 27. D
根据第二段“Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. (感受到来自互联网的压力对Velasquez来说并不是什么新鲜事。当她只有17岁时,一段称她为‘世界上最丑陋的女人’的视频在YouTube上流行起来。对她来说,这是一个艰难的时期。)”和第四段第一、二句“As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the YouTube video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation. (随着Velasquez进入高中,她开始对自己的状况有了更多的了解。但随后出现了YouTube视频,这威胁到她已经摇摇欲坠的根基。)”可知,别人对Velasquez外貌的批评是她青少年时期主要的压力来源。故选B。
25. 推理判断题。根据第四段第三句一直到段末“Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. “I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez.(虽然这很困难,但霸凌的那一刻激发了Velasquez利用她新发现的平台做好的事情。 故选A。

根据第二段“Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. (感受到来自互联网的压力对Velasquez来说并不是什么新鲜事。当她只有17岁时,一段称她为‘世界上最丑陋的女人’的视频在YouTube上流行起来。对她来说,这是一个艰难的时期。)”和第四段第三句“Although it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. (虽然这很困难,但霸凌的那一刻激发了Velasquez要把新发现的平台用于好的方面。)”可知Velasquez经历了网络霸凌,但是她勇敢地面对。再结合文章第四段提到的她为了呼吁反对网络霸凌所做的努力可知,全文介绍了Velasquez由于经历网络霸凌继而倡导反对网络霸凌的故事。故选D。

This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers(young people aged from 13—19)from all over the world will spend about ten months in US homes. They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that were usual in the United States. There were almost no outdoor activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car. “Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize American schools,” he said. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outdoor activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
28. The whole exchange program is mainly to________.
A. help teenagers in other countries know the real America
B. send students in America to travel in Germany
C. let students learn something about other countries
D. have teenagers learn new languages
29. What is particular in American schools?
A. There is some middle ground between two teaching buildings.
B. There are a lot of outdoor activities.
C. Students usually take 14 subjects in all.
D. Students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car.
30. What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life?
A. A better education should include something good from both America and Germany.
B. German schools trained students to be better citizens.
C. American schools were not as good as German schools.
D. The easy life in the American school was more helpful to students.
31. This year________ teenagers will take part in the exchange program between America and other countries.
A. twenty-three hundred B. thirteen hundred
C. over three thousand D. less than two thousand
C 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据第一段最后两句“They will attend US schools, meet US teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.(他们将在美国上学,与美国青少年见面,形成对真正的美国的印象。与此同时,大约1300名美国青少年将前往其他国家学习新的语言,对世界其他地方有新的了解)”可知,整个交换项目主要是为了让学生了解其他国家。故选C项。
29. 细节理解题。根据最后一段第五、六句“In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outdoor activities.(在德国,我们除了学习什么也不做。在这里我们参加许多户外活动)”可知,在美国,学生可以参加许多户外活动。句中的“Here”指的是在美国的学校,由此可知,美国学校的特别之处在于有很多户外活动。故选B项。
30. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的二、三句“I suppose I should criticize American schools(我想我应该批评美国学校)”“It is far too easy by our level.(以我们的水平来说,这太容易了)”和最后两句“I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.(我认为也许你们的学校在培养公民方面做得更好。这两者之间应该有一个中间地带)”可知,迈克在经历了美国的学校生活后认为,更好的教育应该包括来自美国和德国的好的方面,即双方的优点。故选A项。
根据第一段第一句“This year some twenty-three hundred teenagers(young people aged from 13—19)from all over the world will spend about ten months in US homes. (今年,来自世界各地的大约2300名青少年(13-19岁的年轻人)将在美国家庭度过大约10个月的时间)和最后一句“At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.(与此同时,大约1300名美国青少年将前往其他国家学习新的语言,对世界其他地方有新的了解)”可知,世界各国有2300人参加交换生项目,美国有1300人参加交换生项目,共计3600人,即超过3000人将参加美国和其他国家之间的交流项目。故选C项。

“Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” — Robin Williams from Dead Poets Society. This is true to my first-year self, who was crazy about getting good grades, and failed to seek the happiness found in everything else that college has to offer.
Like some people, I grew up with a family that valued academics over all else, who gave you a little extra love when you were doing great in your classes, and took it away when you didn’t. As a result, my self-worth became tied to my academic success. There is a difference between trying to always better yourself for yourself, and simply putting too much on your plate until you burn out from attempting to live up to certain expectations. We should all try to do the former, but unfortunately our mindsets have been strange to follow the latter.
For the past week, I have been going around campus asking my friends what they wanted to get out of college. Why were they truly here? As you can imagine, most of the answers I got can be summed up to one word一money. It is obviously a given that everyone who puts themselves through college sees it as a means to an end, that end being making a living in the future. And few went on to say they were truly passionate about what they were studying.
However, we should all try to develop a long-sighted perspective on how we want to shape our lives. Do things with intention, because everything you do now will have a hand in shaping who you turn out to be, whether you like it or not. Take some classes on topics that you’re genuinely interested in learning about, not just passing. Join clubs or work on projects that resonate with you and push you beyond your boundaries. Build a community. Surround yourself with people who challenge and excite you. And most of all, embrace the fact that failure and loss are sometimes inevitable in life.
32. What is the function of paragraph one?
A. To share an idea.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To tell the readers a story.
D. To quote a famous saying.
33. What should people do according to paragraph two?
A. Perfect yourself for yourself.
B. Live up to certain expectations.
C. Treasure academics over all else.
D. Tie self-value to academic success.
34. According to the author, what should people get out of college?
A. Good grades and passion to learn.
B. The ability to make a lot of money.
C. The ability to make a living in the future.
D. A farseeing view on how to direct our lives.
35. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To inspire readers to the true meaning of college life.
B. To tell readers a story about his college life.
C. To explain why good grades is not everything.
D. To complain about his family’s wrong attitude to him.
B 33. A 34. D 35. A

故选A。
根据第五段“However, we should all try to develop a long-sighted perspective on how we want to shape our lives. Surround yourself with people who challenge and excite you.”(然而,我们都应该试着从长远的角度看待我们想要如何塑造我们的生活。

And most of all, embrace the fact that failure and loss are sometimes inevitable in life.”(然而,我们都应该试着从长远的角度看待我们想要如何塑造我们的生活。 故选A。

How can positive psychology help in trying times?
“Positive psychology is not about denying difficult emotions. It’s about opening to what is happening here and now, and cultivating and enjoying the good in your life,” says Ron Siegel, assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School.
Growing evidence suggests that positive psychology techniques can indeed be valuable in times of stress, grief, or other difficulties. 36 . Here are three positive psychology practices you can try.
Be more mindful
Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment and accepting it without judgement. 37 . Formal mindfulness-based stress reduction programs have been shown to help reduce physical and psychological symptoms in people facing a variety of challenges, including cancer and chronic pain.
38
Research suggests that people who volunteer their time tend to be happier than those who don’t. 39 . Try this exercise: When you have a free afternoon, flip a coin. Heads, do something for yourself. Tails, do something to help your community or another person. Notice how you feel at the time and in the hours and days that follow.
Practice gratitude
Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what you receive, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, you acknowledge the goodness in your life. 40 .Our brains are wired to take note of when things go wrong. But keeping a gratitude journal — writing down things you’re thankful for — makes you more aware of when things go right.
A. Spend time wisely
B. Share some kindness
C. You can apply this to your past, the present, and the future
D. They may also help you recover more rapidly after unpleasant events
E. Those who give charitable donations may even get a small mood boost
F. Positive psychology focused mainly on pursuing rewarding experiences
G. Learning to live more in the present is especially helpful when the future is uncertain
D 37. G 38. B 39. E 40. C
36. 根据空前的“Growing evidence suggests that positive psychology techniques can indeed be valuable in times of stress, grief, or other difficulties.(越来越多的证据表明,积极心理学技术在压力、悲伤或其他困难时期确实很有价值。)”可知,在有困难时积极心理学的方法的确很有价值,D选项“They may also help you recover more rapidly after unpleasant events(它们还可以帮助你在不愉快的事件后更快地恢复过来)”讲述的内容是积极心理学技能的积极作用,其中的“unpleasant events”与空前中“stress, grief, or other difficulties”内容一致,且代词they指代的内容与空前的positive psychology techniques一致。故选D项。
37. 根据空前的“Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment and accepting it without judgement.(正念是有意识地把注意力集中在当下,不加评判地接受它的一种练习。)”可知,正念是将注意力关注当下,不加评判地接受的训练,G选项“Learning to live more in the present is especially helpful when the future is uncertain(当未来不确定时,学会更多地活在当下尤其有用)”讲述的是在未来不明确时,学会活在当下特别有用,其中的“Learning to live more in the present”与空前内容一致。故选G项。
38. 分析语篇可知,此处应为本段的主题句,其它段落的主题句为祈使句,所以此空处应为祈使句,根据下文中的“Research suggests that people who volunteer their time tend to be happier than those who don’t.(研究表明,自愿奉献时间的人往往比不这样做的人更快乐。)”可知,研究发现,愿意贡献时间的人比不愿贡献时间的人快乐,以及“Try this exercise: When you have a free afternoon, flip a coin. Heads, do something for yourself. Tails, do something to help your community or another person.(试试这个练习:当你下午有空的时候,抛硬币。正面,为自己做点什么。反面,做一些帮助你的社区或其他人的事情。)”可知,选择做一些帮助社区或者他人的事情,由此可知,本段讲述的与做善事有关系,B选项“Share some kindness”为祈使句,且内容与本段内容相关,概括本段的主题。故选B项。
39. 根据空前的“Research suggests that people who volunteer their time tend to be happier than those who don’t.(研究表明,自愿奉献时间的人往往比不这样做的人更快乐。)”以及空后的“Try this exercise: When you have a free afternoon, flip a coin. Heads, do something for yourself. Tails, do something to help your community or another person.(试试这个练习:当你下午有空的时候,抛硬币。正面,为自己做点什么。反面,做一些帮助你的社区或其他人的事情。)”可知空前与空后讲述的内容均与做善事有关系,由此可以推断,该空处应与做善事有关系,E选项“Those who give charitable donations may even get a small mood boost(那些进行慈善捐赠的人甚至可能会得到一点情绪上的提升)”讲述的是做慈善的人的情绪可以到的小小的提升,符合本段的主题,与空前和空后的内容吻合。故选E项。
40. 根据空前的“With gratitude, you acknowledge the goodness in your life.(带着感激,你承认生活中的美好。)”可知,怀着感恩之心,你会感谢生活中的美好,根据空后的“Our brains are wired to take note of when things go wrong. But keeping a gratitude journal — writing down things you’re thankful for — makes you more aware of when things go right.(我们的大脑会记录下什么时候出错。

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And unless otherwise assigned (指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 41 to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 42 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 43 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the 44 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. But for the teacher who kept insisting on my “ 45 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 46 of it! When I first started 47 the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 48 what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get 49 and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid. Fortunately, I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to 50 learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t 51 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the rules and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive 52 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the 53 . I never had so much fun!
With my 54 self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “ 55 ” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, to raising my hand—even when I sometimes wasn’t 100 percent sure I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

分析句子结构并参考句意,空白处下文“Su Ming, 16, said he hoped to return to the nursing home regularly to spend time with the seniors that he made friends with.( 16岁的苏说他希望能定期到养老院和与他交朋友的老人们一起度过快乐时光)”为结果状语从句,又因so…that 为固定句型,故填that。

My favorite corner in the school
Our school has a lot of corners where students like to hang out, such as the playground, computer rooms and the art room.
My favorite corner is the library. In the library, people know how to restrict themselves and behave more politely, and it is a good place for students to read plenty of novels and study their own subjects. I am used to staying in the library after school, because I enjoy its quiet atmosphere and it’s helpful when I do my homework. It is also a good place to meet some friends who have something in common with me, and we can share experience in different subjects.

One summer, I went on a four-day desert trip with my family. On the train, I looked out of the window, expecting something surprising to happen on this desert trip. I was very excited all the way, talking about what would happen in the desert with my parents, standing up and looking around.
After what seemed passed quickly, we arrived at the destination, which was the endless desert as far as the eye could see. Everywhere was dull yellow, and there were no trees, and the vastness of the desert shocked each of us.
Before we started our journey, the guide explained the rules to us: We’d better put on sun-protective clothing and hold onto the hiking pole. We had to walk 18 kilometers per day for four days. There were two routes that we could choose from. One was down the hill. There were rivers and vegetation (植被). The road was relatively flat, easy to walk, and it was not so hot. The other route was through the real desert, which was all sand and no water and dust storms often happened. Even before starting the hike, we could feel it blowing into our eyes. We had to go step by step, and our feet could often get stuck in the sand. We needed to arrive at the next destination before 6 pm. There would be a rest area every five kilo-meters, where we could drink water and eat some food. If we really couldn’t persist (坚持), we could quit and take the car. Those who did persist to the end would have a surprise.
Everyone was discussing with excitement after they heard the rules. Many people wanted to fight for the first place. Personally, I wanted to win the surprise as well. Most of the people, including my friends, took the first route, but two adults and one child took the other. Yes, that was my parents and me. I just wanted to break through and challenge myself.

With their encouragement, I gathered my strength and moved on.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Soon, we set off. With the weather being so hot and dry, we wore thick clothes to protect ourselves from being burned, which, however, made us feel uncomfortable. I held on to the hiking pole, walking with difficulty. When sweating through our clothes, we were still only halfway to arriving at our next destination. I was extremely worn out and began to consider giving up and taking the bus straight to my destination. Figuring out what was on my mind, my parents kept encouraging me to keep going.
With their encouragement, I gathered my strength and moved on. I made up my mind to challenge myself and walk the entire desert. Without any hesitation, I kept walking. In the end, I managed to be the only child to walk the entire desert at the age of thirteen. I successfully broke through myself and finished the 72-kilometer walk in the desert. As I stood on the stage with the souvenir gift and watched the crowd cheering and applauding me for my persistence, I was so proud of myself.
