Despite the warmer weather, the waterfalls at a popular scenic spot in a national forest park in Hebei Province remain frozen, according to the website of China News Service.
Visitors have been coming in groups to Baicaopan to see the heavy layers of the frozen waterfalls at Yesanpo national forest park, about two hours from Beijing. Baicaopan is one of the four highest mountains in western Beijing, whose tallest peak is 1983 meters. Its high altitude brings about constantly changing scenery down the mountain ridges as the seasons change.
Workers at the tourist attraction say there are still huge glaciers about 1000 meters long and numerous small solidly frozen waterfalls inside the scenic area.
Visitors are crowding to Yesanpo before rising temperatures melt the waterfalls and glaciers. Workers at Yesanpo estimate that the freeze will last until the end of May or the beginning of June.

A
What insiders look for when assessing a high school
Tons of AP classes. Beautiful buildings. A winning soccer team. What makes a high school great is all the stuff you hear about? Think again. Here are some absolutely vital, but often overlooked things that indicate a quality high school.
Adults and students high five each other in the halls.
Or at least smile and say hey. Are students comfortable to enter a teacher’s office or classroom during a break, just to check in? Do they trust the adults at the school enough to share their lives outside of school? Indeed, strong, caring relationships with adults in a school setting increase students’ motivation and academic success.
No child is left without a plan.
Good high schools make sure there’s a well-maintained and real-time updated system that students and parents know how to use to check on their progress before report cards come out, especially for students at risk of failing or dropping out. They give all students access to demanding academics and meaningful career options throughout their high school years, plus extra support for applying for college or pursuing a career.
Everyone’s voice is being heard.
All of the students should be valued as individuals and as members of the community. Do students get to participate in decisions that affect their learning? Do the adults and students at the school feel that their personal identities are valued and respected?
When you ask a kid, why are you doing that? He has an answer.
At a quality high school, students should be able to say why they’re spending their valuable time programming a robot, testing the water at the local stream, or designing a museum exhibit. Of course every single assignment will not get a clarity of purpose, but the more you hear a logical response to why, the more it’s likely that students are engaged in realistic ways of learning how to solve complex, open-ended, real-world problems.
21. Why is campus greeting valued in a quality high school according to the text?
A. It shows respect for school staff.
B. It helps build a harmonious relationship.
C. It demonstrates examples of good manners.
D. It weighs the overall performance of the students.
22. How does a quality school guarantee every child has a plan?
A. By handing out report cards in advance.
B. By involving students in decision making.
C. By updating teaching methods frequently.
D. By giving timely feedback and career guidance.
23. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To define the success of a student.
B. To recommend a quality high school.
C. To clarify the purpose of school education.
D. To offer some criteria for school assessment.
B 22. D 23. D
Adults and students high five each other in the halls. (大人和学生在大厅里互相击掌)的“Or at least smile and say hey. Are students comfortable to enter a teacher’s office or classroom during a break, just to check in? Do they trust the adults at the school enough to share their lives outside of school? Indeed, strong, caring relationships with adults in a school setting increase students’ motivation and academic success. (或者至少微笑着说声嗨。学生在课间休息时进入老师的办公室或教室,只是为了报到吗?他们是否足够信任学校里的成年人,愿意分享他们校外的生活?的确,在学校环境中,与成年人建立强有力的、相互关爱的关系可以增加学生的动力和学业成功)”可知,高质量的高中重视校园问候,这么做有助于学生和大人之间形成相互关爱、和谐的关系。故选B项。
22. 细节理解题。根据No child is left without a plan.(没有一个孩子是没有计划的)的“Good high schools make sure there’s a well-maintained and real-time updated system that students and parents know how to use to check on their progress before report cards come out, especially for students at risk of failing or dropping out. They give all students access to demanding academics and meaningful career options throughout their high school years, plus extra support for applying for college or pursuing a career.
What insiders look for when assessing a high school (在评估一所高中时,内部人士会寻找什么),以及第一段“Tons of AP classes. Beautiful buildings. A winning soccer team. What makes a high school great is all the stuff you hear about? Think again. Here are some absolutely vital, but often overlooked things that indicate a quality high school. (大量的AP课程,美丽的建筑,一支获胜的足球队,是什么让一所高中变得很棒,是你听到的所有东西?再想想。这里有一些绝对重要,但经常被忽视的事情,象征一所高质量的高中)”,以及各段的小标题可知,本文提供了对于一个高中进行评估时,都有哪些标准。由此推知,文章的目的是:提供评估一所高中的一些标准。故选D项。
B
If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.
Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress. Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that?
Let’s not forget about peer (同龄人) pressure. All high school students meet with it at some point in their lives. High school can be a place where students are made fun of, singled out and pointed at.
My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.
I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious. That’s exactly why I know that the focus I give to my future is important in leading me to a career that will allow me to contribute (贡献) to society.
24. What is the author’s attitude to high school students’ working part-time?
A. He is against it. B. He feels proud of it.
C. He considers it worth a try. D. He thinks it does them good.
25. What does the author think of today’s adults?
A. They are proud of high school students.
B. They expect too much of high school students.
C. They are more stressed than high school students.
D. They don’t fully understand high school students.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Stress. B. Schoolwork. C. Part-time job. D. School life.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. The roles of the youth in today’s society.
B. The stressful life of high school students.
C. The way to deal with stress of school life.
D. The differences between parents and high school students.
A 25. D 26. D 27. B
根据第二段中“Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that?(许多学生在高中时就开始了他们的第一份工作,所以现在你每天早上都要上学,然后是在家和工作中的责任。当你在那里把工作都完成的时候,你太累了,无法完成你的作业,但你熬夜去完成作业,第二天回到学校感觉很困。这有什么好处?)”可知作者反对课后做兼职。故选A。
根据第二段中“Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress.(成年人经常告诉我们,我们不知道什么是压力。但我们有自己的压力水平。)”以及第四段“My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.(我想说的是:高中生的压力比成年人想象的要大得多。我们的压力可能不包括支付账单,但我敢肯定,如果我们生活中的成年人今天能够回到学校,他们会惊讶于它的巨大变化。)”可知作者认为高中生的压力比成年人想象的要大得多,如今的成年人并不能完全理解现在的高中生,故选D。
26. 词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious. (我承认,当我们是学生时,没有美好的时刻和回忆。我妈妈总是告诉我尽可能享受it。我知道校外的世界往往很艰难,责任很重。)” 可知,作者认为他们现在学生没有美好的时光和回忆;再结合下文对比踏入社会后生活的艰难和责任重大可知,此处指妈妈让作者珍惜学生时代的生活,故此处 it 指的是学校生活。故选D。
27. 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.(如果有人问我现在的学生是什么感觉,我可能会这样回答他们:在当今社会做学生并不总是容易的。)”以及第二段第一句“Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress.(成年人经常告诉我们,我们不知道什么是压力。但我们有自己的压力水平。)”可知作者作为学生也很不容易,也有要面对的压力;文章下文作者详细阐述了高中生面临的来自学业、兼职、同辈和校园欺凌等各方面的压力,同时还将其与成年人的压力做了对比。由此可知,全文主要围绕高中学生充满压力的生活展开,因此B项“The stressful life of high school students.(高中生紧张的生活。)”
C
These next three years in senior high school may see many relationships coming to an end, a lot of drama between people, and especially a lot of stress (压力). During these next years, you’ll experience a lot, and hopefully, this advice could be of use to you.
First of all, high school is not how the movies show it to be. There are no life-changing things that make you popular, and there are no big parties where teens enjoy themselves together and new friends are made. The reality is that you’ll stay up till three in the morning doing homework, the food in the school isn’t the best, and you will cry about everything.
Just know walking through this next part of your life won’t be a simple walk in the park. You will go through difficulties, but at the end of the day, you’ll decide whether they’re going to influence you or not. While going through a difficult or unpleasant time, know that whatever happens these experiences don’t define (界定) you.
These next moments will be happy, mad, sad, etc. There will be amazing good days, and awful bad ones. Be yourself because many comments will be made about you, your friends, your attitude (态度), and everything in your life. Aside from those people that cause drama, make bad comments about you, and hurt you, there are people who love you and want the best for you. Learning this will take time and you’ll be hurt, but you will be okay. So, in a word, a high school is a work in progress.
High school only comes along once, so make the most of it because very quickly you’ll be shaking your principal’s (校长的) hand while they hand you your high school diploma (毕业证书).
28. What does the author stress about high school life in paragraph 2?
A. It has challenges ahead. B. It is full of competition.
C. It is a time for making friends. D. It offers chances to win popularity.
29. What helps high schoolers deal with troubles according to paragraph 3?
A. Regular exercise. B. Enough patience.
C. Right attitude to life. D. Support from school leaders.
30. What does the author want to tell new high schoolers in paragraph 4?
A. To avoid unfriendly people. B. To be prepared for what will happen.
C. To work hard to make progress. D. To try to protect those who love them.
31. Why does the author write the text?
A. To share his failures with new high schoolers.
B. To offer his suggestions to new high schoolers.
C. To tell new high schoolers how he managed stress.
D. To explain the importance of study to new high schoolers.
A 29. C 30. B 31. B
根据第二段中的“The reality is that you’ll stay up till three in the morning doing homework, the food in the school isn’t the best, and you will cry about everything.(现实是你会熬夜做作业到凌晨三点,学校的食物不是最好的,你会为每件事哭泣。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中的“You will go through difficulties, but at the end of the day, you’ll decide whether they’re going to influence you or not. While going through a difficult or unpleasant time, know that whatever happens these experiences don’t define (界定) you.(你会经历困难,但在一天结束的时候,你会决定他们是否会影响你。在经历困难或不愉快的时候,要知道无论发生什么,这些经历都不能定义你)”可知,作者认为,经历的困难是否会影响到学生由学生来决定,无论经历何种困难,都不应界定学生,由此可知,只有对高中生活有个正确的态度才能处理困难。故选C项。
30. 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“These next moments will be happy, mad, sad, etc. There will be amazing good days, and awful bad ones.(接下来的时刻将是快乐、疯狂、悲伤等等。会有令人惊叹的好日子,也会有糟糕透顶的日子。)”可知,未来的高中生活充满快乐,悲伤,疯狂,难过,有好日子有糟糕的日子,结合尾句“Learning this will take time and you’ll be hurt, but you will be okay. So, in a word, a high school is a work in progress.(学会这一点需要时间,你会受伤,但你会没事的。所以,总而言之,高中是一项正在进行的工作。)”可知,要学习这些需要时间,也会受到伤害,高中是正在进行中的工作,未来不确定的事很多,由此可知,作者想告诉高中生要为将来发生的一切做好准备。故选B项。
31. 推理判断题。根据首段中的“During these next years, you’ll experience a lot, and hopefully, this advice could be of use to you.(在接下来的几年里,你会经历很多,希望这个建议对你有用。)”

Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.
32. What happened to the author after science class?
A. He lost his science textbook.
B. He got lost on the campus.
C. He was late for math class.
D. He was given detention.
33. What did the author think of his art class?
A. Difficult. B. Enjoyable. C. Boring. D. Easy.

Once in a school, about 50 students from different junior high schools formed a new high school class.
The class was made up of active and outstanding young students but the problem was that they wouldn’t share information to solve learning problems with each other and it was a headache. For instance, each of them wanted to achieve good results, but they did not want to let others know their learning progress and their own advantages, nor did they want to expose their weaknesses.
So one day, Michelle, headmaster of the class, invited them to an event. In this event, there were several fun activities organized for everyone.
For one of the activities, Michelle brought the class into a classroom which had 50 desks and envelopes of the same quantity with names on them. The students found their own envelopes and made them in the corresponding positions. Everyone was excited and was wondering what kind of activity it would be.
Michelle took a few minutes to say, “Each of you picks up the envelope in front of you and solves the problems in it by yourself. Let me divide the class into several groups, and the list is shown on the blackboard. The group that solves all the problems first wins. ”
Everyone immediately picked up a pen and began to work on the problem. All of them were absorbed because they were competitive. Solving difficult problems is an attractive thing for those who love learning. However, even after 20 minutes only a few scattered (分散的) students were able to finish the problems. They didn’t give up and were thinking long and hard to solve the problems. Michelle came and told them that this round was over and everyone should go for next round of activity.

For next round, Michelle told them to change their way of solving difficult problems. He required everyone to find their own group members to discuss and solve the problems together. Initially, they felt reluctant to do so. Then, one group took the lead and began to debate heatedly. Gradually, other groups followed suit. Each member aired their own opinion and they made every effort to figure out the most suitable solutions to the problems, thus completing the task much more quickly than expected. Delightedly, they all had a sense of achievement.
At the end of this round, Michelle came and saw the students talking and laughing happily. He felt satisfied with what they did. He said, “We can now understand that we are much more efficient when willing to share our views with other students. We are better problem solvers by working together, not individually.” Meanwhile, the students were touched and inspired, for they had been isolating themselves from other students. If it had not been for this event, they wouldn’t have realized that they should cooperate and cultivate team spirit to achieve their goals.
