We will be going to the Hands On Children’s Museum in Olympia where the kids will be able to see exhibits on art and science. The date for the field trip is next Tuesday, 18th July. So we will leave the school at 10:00 am and arrive at the museum around 10:30, and head back to the school around 12:30 pm. We will get a free bus ride, which is awesome because it will save us a lot of money. The cost per child is still not confirmed because we are waiting for the museum to apply a discount, but it should not be more than 8 dollars. The museum requires one volunteer parent for every 5 children, so we will need at least ten of them. Also as a reminder that children need to pack their own lunch. If you wish to attend the field trip and volunteer, please let us know via email, by adding your name to the list linked below as soon as possible.

People often plan to receive medical exam but don’t, resulting in increasing health care cost. A surprising number of citizens mean to complete tax forms in time but forget to, forcing them to pay unnecessary fines. Many families miss the government deadline to complete financial aid forms, losing out on aid available for child care.
How can policymakers help people follow through on important tasks? They use carrots and sticks: bonuses, late fees, or regulations. These methods can be clumsy, and often aren’t effective for the situation at hand. Reminding people to form simple plans. however, provides a low-cost, simple, and powerful tool.
Evidence is growing that providing prompts (提示), which push people at key times to think through how and when they will follow through, make people more likely to act on tasks of importance. In one early randomized(随机的) study on vaccination(预防接种) rates, for example, a team of social psychologists showed that 28% of Oxford University seniors got the shot after being encouraged to review their weekly schedules and to select a possible time to stop by the health center. They were also given a list of times when shots were available and a map showing the health center’s location. Only 3% of the seniors got the shot when simply informed about how effective the shots were.
People who make a plan gain an advantage from their psychological forces. Specifically, they can overcome the tendency to put off as well as the tendency to be overly optimistic about the time it will take to accomplish a task.
People mistakenly believe that their strong intentions are enough to push them to perform desired behaviors. These psychological research results stress the need for policy decisions that encourage plan making and improve social welfare.
24. What phenomenon is described in paragraph 1?
A. Heavy burden of daily chores. B. Lack of task management skills.
C. Disappointment of over-ambitions. D. Failure to achieve original intentions.
25. What does the randomized vaccination study show?
A. People need to think deeply before they act.
B. Specific reminders help people accomplish plans.
C. Awareness of task significance matters in planning.
D. Seniors need encouragement to have vaccination shots.
26. What psychological benefit can people get from making a plan?
A. They are realistic in the time required. B. They are optimistic about the outcome.
C. They are confident to overcome hardship. D. They are careful with task arrangements.
27. Who may be the intended readers of this text?
A. Medical staff. B. Government officials.
C. Ordinary people. D. Social psychologists.

Parents can begin good organization habits with preschool-age children, said Elana Spira, Ph. D. , co-author of The Organized Child. She recommends asking them to do small, simple actions on a regular basis. Maybe they bring their lunch bag to the kitchen, or put their shoes in a closet. These won’t save parents tons of time, but they will help develop good habits. Doing small chores at a young age helps children exercise discipline and attention, which they’ll need later on.
When kids enter elementary school, they’re ready for more responsibility. This is the time to teach them about daily routines, and help them take control over theirs. Parent and child might sit down together and make a list of everything that needs to be done. Together, they should figure out how long each activity takes, and when the best time to do them is. It’s also wise to create a firm schedule for different tasks. Figure it out all before, and stick to the schedule as much as possible. Also, make sure the rooms in which these tasks take place are equipped with easy-to-read clocks. Time management is an important part of learning organization, but it can’t be done if kids don’t know what time it is.
All this planning ahead is important to start in the single-digit years, but it works for teens, too. As children get older and their schedules get busier, they need their parents’ help identifying priorities and understanding what it takes to make it all work. The goal is to help them figure out what will work for them — and then help them stick with it.
Calendars are also essential for helping families stay organized. Julie Morgenstern, organizing and productivity expert, suggests keeping a family calendar-paper or electronic-and maintaining it regularly. Each family member should have a colour dedicated to their activities, so it’s easy to see who is doing what, when. “You can’t expect people to look at the calendar on their own. You should have a family get-together every day to look at it as part of your routine, and look at three days ahead,” Morgenstern said. “It’s better to find any problems (in the schedule) days before.”
Organization gives children the chance to work on executive functioning, or the skills that make it possible to focus on a task and complete it. These skills include inhibition(自制力); emotional control; task initiation; and time management. The lessons learned from managing their own calendars will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Overall, children tend to be more motivated to learn organization skills if they see organization as a “challenge to overcome, rather than faults to repair,” Spira said.
28. What suggestions does Spira make for preschool-age kids?
A. Practising discipline and attention exercises. B. Doing small chores regularly.
C. Learning about daily routines. D. Planning for daily activities-to-do.
29. According to the passage, what does “identifying priorities” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. working out what should be done first as far as importance is concerned
B. not missing out on some golden opportunities in their life
C. weighing up the pros and cons of a dilemma
D. skipping those unnecessary and unimportant in their studies
30. Which of the following may Julie Morgenstern disagree with?
A. A calendar plays an important role in helping a family keep organized.
B. Each of the family members should add their own coloured activities when updating a calendar.
C. The family should get together daily and plan 3 days ahead to find possible problems.
D. It is every family member’s duty to have a clear picture of the whole family members’ routine.
31. Which of the following is the most suitable for the title of the passage?
A. Cultivating a Promising Child B. Kid Behaviour-training Organizations
C. Getting Your Kids Organized D. Skills Needed for a Whole Life
B 29. A 30. D 31. C
由第一段中的“Parents can begin good organization habits with preschool-age children, said Elana Spira, Ph. D., co-author of The Organized Child. She recommends asking them to do small, simple actions on a regular basis. Maybe they bring their lunch bag to the kitchen, or put their shoes in a closet.
由第三段中的“As children get older and their schedules get busier, they need their parents’ help identifying priorities and understanding what it takes to make it all work. The goal is to help them figure out what will work for them 故选A项。
由第四段“Calendars are also essential for helping families stay organized. “It’s better to find any problems (in the schedule) days before.”(日历对于帮助家庭保持有序也很重要。
由第一段中的“Parents can begin good organization habits with preschool-age children, said Elana Spira, Ph. D., co-author of The Organized Child.
C
Most people follow others blindly mainly under the effect of peer(同龄人) pressure. Some people also feel it safe to follow a large number of people. In some rare cases it might be right to follow the crowd(群众), but in most cases this can be one big mistake. Actually there are reasons why we shouldn’t follow the crowd blindly.
According to a study, people tend to follow the crowd when they aren’t sure about the direction they should take. This means a large number of people could be following others without understanding what’s right and what’s wrong! This attracts more people to follow them and the result is that most people move in a certain direction even if it isn’t right.
A man who wants to be successful always hopes for others’ guidance and he usually follows the same path of most people, but the question this man never asks himself is:are all of those people successful?Of course not!If you want to follow a crowd, then follow a successful one. However, in real life you’ll only find one successful person among hundreds of people, and that’s why following the crowd makes no sense at all.
Most people act without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re making decisions you might regret later.
However, should we never follow the crowd? No. I’m not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I’m just asking you to think wisely before you make a decision. If you find others are right, there is no problem in following them, but if you have doubts about the direction they’re moving in, don’t follow them blindly.
32. According to the text, most people follow others blindly mainly because .
A. they are affected by their peers B. they don’t believe in themselves
C. they feel it safe to stay with others D. they are weaker than other people
33. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. It needs some time to think wisely.
B. We shouldn’t regret what we have done.
C. We should think wisely before deciding to follow others.
D. Making others follow us is better than following others.
34. Which of the following will the author agree with?
A. It is wrong to follow other people.
B. Those who follow others won’t succeed.
C. Only those foolish people will follow others.
D. One should use his head before following others.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Effects of following others.
B. Benefits of making wise decisions.
C. Reasons why most people follow others.
D. Reasons why people shouldn’t follow others blindly.
A 33. C 34. D 35. D
Most people follow others blindly mainly under the effect of peer(同龄人) pressure. 故选A。
Most people act without thinking wisely. If you always follow others because they’re greater than you in number, then sooner or later you’ll discover that you’re making decisions you might regret later.
I’m not trying to say you should never follow the crowd, but instead I’m just asking you to think wisely before you make a decision.
When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left. 36
Pain is part of growing.
Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward. That’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless life forces us to. When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose. 37 When you roll with life, instead of resisting it, both kinds help you grow.
Everything in life is temporary.
Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light — you are reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won’t. 38
Complaining changes nothing.
39 It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed. It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.
40
Don’t be afraid to get back up — to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. And even if you fall short, keep going.
A. Those who complain the most, accomplish the least.
B. Getting help from others is necessary.

F 37. E 38. D 39. A 40. C
36. 根据上文“When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left.(当一切都不顺利的时候,总是看看你拥有什么,而不是你失去了什么。
37. 根据上文“When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose.(当处境艰难时,提醒自己没有痛苦是没有目的的)”可知,本句主要是在说明痛苦的目的。
38. 根据小标题“Everything in life is temporary.(生活中的一切都是暂时的)”和上文“Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light — you are reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever.
39. 根据后文“It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed. It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.(尝试做一些伟大的事情却失败,总比什么都不做而成功好。 故选A。
40. 根据本段内容“Don’t be afraid to get back up — to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. And even if you fall short, keep going.(不要害怕重新站起来——再去尝试,再去爱,再去生活,再去梦想。

Trust
“Settle down!” Mr. Taylor was trying to calm the boys with a loud voice. The moment they entered the gym and saw the climbing walls towering over them, the boys got excited and started making noises. But Stevie was an exception, who was standing aside looking at his thin arms silently. Stevie didn’t like climbing. It wasn’t his thing. Getting along with people wasn’t his thing, either. He just felt nobody liked or trusted him at school.
Then came the coach, who taught the boys some basic skills. He said everyone should have a climbing partner and showed them how to belay (保护) their partner. “If you are a climber, trust your belayer and challenge yourself. Belayers, please remember that your partner’s life depends on you.”
The moment he finished, the boys couldn’t wait to match themselves with a partner except Stevie, who was left alone wandering around the gym. Noticing his embarrassment, Mr. Taylor raised his voice and said, “I need someone I can really trust to team up with!” He looked around. Then his gaze fell upon Stevie. “How about you, Stevie? Would you like to be my belayer?” “Me?” Stevie widened his eyes, surprised to hear Mr. Taylor even say his name. He had thought he was invisible. “I guess,” Stevie managed a weak smile.
Nervous as he was, he plucked up courage. “It doesn’t matter who gets to the top first. It’s about giving it a go.” Hearing Mr. Taylor’s words, Stevie gritted (咬紧牙关) his teeth and moved up slowly, his face pressed against the rough surface. “Done it!” Stevie finally called from the top with excitement. Then Mr. Taylor started to let him down through a perfect control of the rope.“Well done,” said Mr. Taylor when Stevie landed on the floor.
Now it’s Stevie’s turn to control the rope. Bearing in mind his responsibility, Stevie carefully watched as Mr. Taylor climbed up, pulling in the rope hand over hand. He felt his heart racing wildly. Finally, Mr. Taylor arrived at the top. “Ready to let me down now?” said Mr. Taylor. “Okay,” Stevie took a deep breath, his palms sweating uncontrollably.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
As Stevie loosened the grip, the rope slipped through his hand much faster than expected.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, the boys burst into wild applause and yelled encouragement at them.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Stevie loosened the grip, the rope slipped through his hand much faster than expected. Suddenly, Mr. Taylor dropped like a stone. Stevie let out a little scream. The picture of Mr. Taylor hitting the ground flashed over his mind. He quickly gripped the rope, bringing Mr. Taylor to a sudden stop. Regretful and cautious, Stevie looked up and saw Mr. Taylor wearing a smile and encouraging him with an inspiring gesture, which made him less nervous. Then he restarted loosening the grip slowly. Finally, Mr. Taylor dropped smoothly down to the bottom and signaled to Stevie with a thumb up. “You made it!”
Suddenly, the boys burst into wild applause and yelled encouragement at them. When Mr. Taylor stepped forward and gave Stevie a big hug, a ripple of excitement and pride ran through him. From that day on, Stevie opened his heart to the people around him. He made new friends at school. He even fell in love with climbing where he was regarded as a trustworthy teammate. Grateful to Mr. Taylor, he knew deep down in his heart that it was his teacher’s trust that allowed him to embrace his new self and others.
