Music and art festivals are fun and exciting events. If you’re planning to go to a festival, it’s important to plan your trip carefully to ensure that you’re safe and have a good time.
Bring clothes to keep warm or cool
In addition to your fun festival clothing, pack a raincoat, some light tank tops, and a sweater or sweatshirt. Don’t forget longer pants for cool evenings or bad weather. In general, it’s best to leave your umbrella at home because they can be dangerous in large crowds.
Get a cheap tent and sleeping bag for multi-day festivals
A majority of people end up throwing their tent away after long festivals, since they normally break from the use. Pick up a less expensive tent with enough room for you and your friends and pack a comfortable sleeping bag for yourself. If you don’t want to camp at the festival, remember to book an AirBnb or a hotel room nearby!
Place a first aid kit in a proper place
Before the festival, buy a small first aid kit with band aids, and any medication that you need to take, in case you get minor injuries or a headache. Keep it in a proper place that’s easily accessible, like your tent or car.
1. Why should umbrellas be left at home?
A. They take up too much space.
B. The weather will be terrible.
C. They might hurt someone.
D. Travelers prefer raincoats.
2. What do most people do with tents after festivals?
A. Sell them.
B. Return them.
C. Pack them up.
D. Throw them away.
3. What is suggested about the first aid kit?
A. It should be put at hand.
B. It ought to be big enough.
C. It must contain all medicines.
D. It has to be placed in the car.

Spaghetti and meatballs is my favorite food. And reading is my favorite hobby. When you are deeply absorbed in a book, you stop paying attention to what’s going on around you. People describe it as being “lost in a book”. It’s a wonderful feeling, but it can be risky.
One day I was home alone doing two of my favorite things: Eating a huge plate of spaghetti and meatballs and reading. At the time, my family had a pet bird, a big white cockatoo named Luke. He was free to leave his perch (栖木) and fly around inside the house. Luke enjoyed “talking” to people, but he wasn’t trained to use real words.
As I was reading and eating, Luke was talking to me, but I was lost in my book. So Luke decided to get closer. He flew from his perch, and before I knew it, he’d landed right on top of my spaghetti and meatballs!
I was so surprised that I didn’t even have time to think. My reaction was the same as yours would be: I shooed (发出嘘声赶走) him off my food! This wouldn’t have been so bad except for one thing: When Luke had landed on my plate, he had grabbed (抓住) my spaghetti with both feet. So when Luke took off again, the spaghetti—still in his feet—went flying everywhere, landing on my shirt and hitting me in the face. Red sauce splattered (泼溅) up the wall and onto the ceiling. As I pulled noodles out of my hair, Luke flew back to his perch, dropping spaghetti sauce all the way.
He wasn’t hurt, except for his dignity—the sauce in his beautiful white feathers turned him orange for several weeks. So next time if you find a spy novel at the library with red spots on two pages near the middle, you’ll know that I’ve read that book, too!
4.What do we know about Luke?
A. He is lost in reading a spy novel.
B. He is good at communicating with people.
C. He is fond of eating spaghetti and meatballs.
D. He is permitted to fly freely inside the house.
5. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. I reacted properly to Luke's behaviour.
B. Luck was attracted by my spaghetti.
C. Luck made the room in a mess.
D. I was addicted to my reading.
6. How does the author sound when telling the story?
A. Puzzled.
B. Humorous.
C. Anxious.
D. Annoyed.
7. What might be a suitable title for the text?
A. Love Me, Love My Dog
B. More Food Hurts the Body
C. Reading Can Be Dangerous
D. Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds
C
When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words.
He used to come downstairs to breakfast.
The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the “Deaths” first, and then he knocked once on the table. One of my sisters brought his bread, already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but once I heard him say, “I love you very much, Edith. I would love more if you buttered my bread on both sides.” He read the paper all through breakfast.
Two knocks on the table meant “I am ready for my tea.” If a single knock followed that meant, “More bread, please.”
After breakfast he said, “Boots.” The paper was spread (展开) for him over the back of an armchair. Yesterday’s paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He read standing at the same time putting on his boots. With one boot finished he said, “Bus.” At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop a bus when it came. It came early sometimes and it had to wait for my father. “Overcoat, hat.” One of my sisters had already brushed his overcoat. Now she held it open for him. Another girl came with his hat, nicely brushed. “Handkerchief, pipe (烟斗).” They were brought and put, with his tobacco (烟草), into his pocket. He looked out of the window and said either “Walking stick” or “Umbrella”. It was handed to him. Ready now, he was still reading the paper. He didn’t put it down until he heard the shout “Bus coming!” Then he kissed my mother and went out. The girls breathed freely.
How lucky a man was to have a wife and five daughters at home!

Imagine a brand-new, magical pill which can measurably improve your memory, overall cognitive (认知的) performance, ability to learn new information, mood, ability to handle problems and more. Would you buy it?
Yeah, yeah, you saw this coming: That pill exists, but not in pill form. You can have all of those benefits for free, and all it takes is going to bed a little bit earlier. So what are we to do to get a better night’s sleep?
First, learn how much sleep you need. Generally, if you’re waking up tired, you’re not getting enough. However, the gold standard of eight hours per night might not be right for you. A study from 2018 brought into question whether we need that magical number, so following your body is the best way to figure out the right rhythm. The only real guideline is to get as much sleep as you need to feel refreshed and energized the next day.
Next, figure out your body’s natural rhythm. Maybe after years of trying, you need to acknowledge that you’re just not a morning person. And that’s perfectly fine! Click the link and take the quiz to find out what kind of sleeper you are, and don’t fight your body’s natural sleep tendencies.
Last, keep a consistent sleep schedule. This can be the most important part of your overall sleep quality. We’re all equipped with circadian clock (生物钟), which is an internal 24-hour timer that naturally tells us when to sleep, and the best way to getting rest and feeling rested is to keep this consistent. Fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day, and try to build as much regularity into your schedule as possible. And don’t forget to keep your bedroom cool.
12. What did the study from 2018 find?
A. There exists the magical pill.
B. It is best to sleep as long as you can.
C. Eight hours of sleep is not always needed.
D. Lack of sleep accounts for waking up tired.
13. What matters most for your sleep?
A. To keep your bedroom cool.
B. To stick to your regular sleep time.
C. To fight against your type of sleep.
D. To equip yourself with a circadian clock.
14. Where can you probably read the text?
A. In a clock store.
B. On a health website.
C. In a daily newspaper.
D. In a science magazine.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Get Good Sleep to Improve Your Life
B. How to Figure Out Your Body’s Natural Rhythm
C. What to Do to Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule
D. Where to Buy a Magical Pill to Improve Memory
五、七选五(每小题2分,共10分)
Laughter is the best medicine. It helps solve problems, improve relationships, and support both physical and emotional health. 1 Read the following suggestions and learn to make laughter part of your life.
Laugh at yourself. Laughing at yourself is one of the biggest differences between happy people and unhappy people. It communicates to both you and the people around you that it’s no big deal. So be brave enough to share your embarrassing moments. 2 When something negative happens, try to make it a humorous story that will make you and others laugh.
3 Keep a toy on your desk or in your car. Put up a funny poster in your office. Choose a computer screensaver that makes you laugh. Frame photos of you and your family or friends having fun. All of these are good resources of laughter.
Spend time with funny people. Even if you don’t consider yourself a humorous person, you can still seek out new friends who are ready to laugh and who can make you laugh. These are people who find humor in everyday events. Their playful points of view and laughter are contagious (传染的). 4
Don’t go a day without laughing. Set aside 10 minutes each day to do something that amuses you. You can watch some humorous videos or look at some funny photos online. 5 Try thinking back to a joke you heard or read, or a comedy you watched.
As long as you have a joyful heart and purposely make time to laugh, you’ll be amazed at how differently you will begin to view your job, your family, your relationships and yourself.

Researchers in Hong Kong demonstrated that when nursing home patients enjoyed jokes, funny books and videos, and silly singing and dancing 1 a weekly basis, their awareness of pain and loneliness decreased 2 (significant). They also felt happier and more satisfied with life.
Many studies 3 (conduct) to prove that laughter can cause increased blood flow, lower blood sugar levels, and better sleep. You don’t have to write a joke to obtain the benefits. Merely experiencing humour will do 4 trick.
But there might be an even stronger reason that a sense of humour is born into the human body. Not only does humour make us smarter and healthier, 5 it may also make us more attractive to others. Because creating and appreciating jokes both require 6 (we) to make connections between many separate pieces of information, 7 (have) a sense of humour shows that we have a wide knowledge and that we know how to think about it in new ways.
Humour has several unique powers. It forces people 8 (consider) in different ways. It promotes the 9 (communicate) among people. It brings people together. It reduces the pain
10 (connect) with life’s difficulties. It exercises your brain. And it makes you cheer up.

第二节 读后续写(25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
At Dana’s yard sale, Tim chose a baseball from the toys spread on the card table and asked about the price. Dana told him everything was a quarter except Nezumi, a cotton toy rat. It was grey with some cotton sticking out from the hole where an ear had been torn off.
“Nezumi is extra special, so he is ten dollars. He needs a safe new home,” Dana sighed. Tim laughed saying he didn’t have ten dollars. Dana laughed too and gave Nezumi to Tim as a free gift because he was her friend. When Tim whispered it was sort of old, Dana said old toys were the best. She then invited Tim to her birthday party the next evening, adding that her parents were giving her a real rat for her birthday. Tim was amazed and asked if it was a live rat.
“Of course,” Dana said.
At home, Tim’s mother showed him the gift she had bought for Dana. It was a knitting spool (针织线轴) shaped like a mushroom. Mom said Dana could knit a scarf for her doll. Tim sighed that Dana wasn’t a knitting kind of person but a rat kind of person. Mom laughed after knowing what had happened. Together they drove to the pet store, where Tim searched and searched and selected a clear plastic ball, one in which the rat could run around on the floor safe from cats and dogs. Tim thought of Nezumi’s ear and decided Dana’s new rat would need this ball.
The next day, Dana brought cupcakes to class. When she handed a cupcake to Tim, she asked if Tim brought Nezumi to school as Nezumi liked to ride in backpacks. Tim was at a loss because Nezumi was at home on his bed. Then Dana asked what gift he was giving her. Tim replied it was a surprise. In silence they sat for a while before he heard Dana say her parents were giving her a new bike for her birthday instead of a live rat because they thought rats would bite things.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右。
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段开头语已给出。

参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
At home that afternoon, Tim stared at the plastic rat ball. Wondering about the use of the clear plastic ball if Dana had no rat, he started walking up and down the room with a frown on his face. Mom was surprised and asked him what was happening. Tim told her Dana wasn't getting a live rat from her parents but a bike. As they were racking their brains (绞尽脑汁) to come up with an appropriate gift, Tim turned around and saw Nezumi on his bed.
Paragraph 2:
All of a sudden, he had an idea. He lifted Nezumi and squeezed Nezumi into the plastic ball with great caution so that Nezumi would be safe from cats and dogs. Seeing this, Mom asked Tim whether he was giving Dana an old cotton rat with one ear as a gift, Tim nodded with a smile saying she would definitely like it. Looking at Mom’s confused expression, Tim added that Dana was a Nezumi kind of person who thought old toys were the best.

B. Return them.
C. Pack them up.
D. Throw them away.

第二节 读后续写
