It is widely believed that humour is good for your health. However, most studies on humour and health show that by watching something humorous comedy films, for example you can just escape from the pain for a short time, or that humour just helps reduce signs of a disease. So far, no study has shown that humour can help a person recover from a serious illness.

One way to study the relationship between humour and health is looking at the health of people who use humour as part of their jobs: comedians and improv(即兴表演) artists, for example. Not only do they use humour as part of their work, but also they show the highest levels of humour ability. So if humour is really good for our health, we can anticipate that comedians benefit the most from it.

Although it is often said that humour can make people live longer, research has actually found the opposite to be true. One study found that comedians and humour writers actually died younger compared with other famous people who were not performers. However, these studies were somewhat limited, because most of the comedians were men and already dead. And many famous people often live very unhealthy lives, and the comedians might have died from reasons such as heavy drinking or smoking.

My colleagues and I decided to take a different way. We collected data(数据) from 491 improv artist students 224 women and 267 men all alive. We compared this improv group with 795 noncomedians, who were matched in age, sex, and education.

We asked participants from both groups to tell us how many diseases they had had in the past three years and how long they had lasted. The improv artists reported that they had had many more diseases, and that these diseases had lasted longer compared with the control group. So our study adds further evidence to the conclusion made by the studies before.

C.It can't really make people feel comfortable.

    A.Predict.   B.Notice.

    C.Understand.   D.Explain.

( )3.What can we know about the improv artists from the author's research?

    A.They had more unhealthy habits.

You probably laugh at something you find funny, but how much do you really know about jokes and humour? Reader's Digest(RD) questioned several experts to give us some facts about them.

RD: What's the oldest joke in the world?

We can't know the oldest joke in the world because it would have existed earlier than writing, says Christie Davies, professor of sociology at the University of Reading in the UK.The oldest joke book that's been found so far is the Greek Philogelos. It dates from the 4th century AD, although the jokes date from an earlier time.According to psychologist Steve Wilson, director of National Humour Month (April in the US), it contains 265 jokes.

RD: Do some people fail to develop a sense of humour?

Rod Martin, professor of psychology at the Western University in Canada, believes that while everyone is born without a sense of humour, as we develop, humour and laughter begin to appear.Of course, some children are more serious, quiet, and less likely to laugh frequently, but this doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humour. And according to Steve Wilson, there are no adults who don't have a sense of humour.Almost everyone is able to develop a sense of humour, and I teach people how, he says.

RD: Do people share a sense of humour unique to their own nation?

Sense of humour does differ a lot by country, according to an author named Scott Weems.British humour is thought to be absurd(荒谬的) in nature, while American humour has an aggressive quality.According to a study, Germans are found to find everything funny.

C.It was found in the UK.   D.It contains the oldest jokes.

( )5.What does Rod Martin agree with about people's sense of humour?

A.Nobody is born with a sense of humour.

B.Some adults lose it when they grow up.

C.Childhood is the best time to develop such ability.

D.Children have a poorer sense of humour than adults.

( )6.What kind of humour has an aggressive feature?

    A.British humour.    B.German humour.

    C.Canadian humour.    D.American humour.

A sense of humour can brighten the family life. You can put on a silly hat and chase a 3-year-old kid, or pretend to fall into a pile of leaves to amuse a first-grader.As kids grow into preteens (about 11 or 12) and teens (13 to 19), you can share jokes as their sense of what's funny becomes better.

Humour is what makes something funny; a sense of humour is the ability to recognise it.Someone with a well-developed sense of humour has the ability to recognise what's funny in others and can amuse them as well.

A good sense of humour is a tool that kids can rely on throughout life to help them.Kids with a well-developed sense of humour are happier and more optimistic, have higher self-esteem, and can handle differences (their own and others') well. And a good sense of humour doesn't just help kids emotionally or socially.Research has shown that people who laugh more are healthierthey're less likely to be depressed and may even have an increased resistance to illness or physical problems. They experience less stress, have lower heart rates, pulses, and blood pressure, and have a better digestion(消化能力).Laughter may even help humans better endure pain, and studies have shown that it improves our immune function. But most of all, a sense of humour is what makes life fun.

We tend to think of humour as part of our genetic make-up, like blue eyes or big feet. But it's not true.A sense of humour actually is a learned quality.Kids can start developing a sense of humour at a very young age.Babies don't really understand humour, but they do know when you're smiling and happy. When you make funny noises or faces and then laugh or smile, your baby is likely to sense your joy and imitate you.Sometime between 9 and 15 months, babies know enough about the world to understand that when Mom puts a piece of cloth on her head, she's doing something unexpected and that it's funny. To help kids at each stage of development, parents should know what's likely to amuse them.

( )8.Which of the following people do you think can best share jokes with their parents?

    A.A newborn baby.   B.An eleven-year-old kid.

    C.A five-year-old kid.   D.A fifteen-month-old baby.

( )9.It can be concluded from the third paragraph that a good sense of humour ________.

A.is one of the most important things needed for a kid to succeed

B.helps kids make more friends throughout their life

C.can improve a kid's mental and physical health

    D.may sometimes cause embarrassment

( )10.Which of the following statements about a sense of humour is NOT true?

A.It can make the family life bright.

B.It is something that kids can rely on for all their life.

C.It is something people are born with.

D.It is the ability to recognise humour.

( )11.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The reason why people should develop a sense of humour.

B.The characteristics of kids' sense of humour at different ages.

C.Tips on how to develop a good sense of humour.

D.The importance of a good sense of humour for kids.

As kids grow into preteens (about 11 or 12) and teens (13 to 19), you can share jokes as their sense of what's funny becomes better.

We tend to think of humour as part of our genetic make-up, like blue eyes or big feet. But it's not true. A sense of humour actually is a learned quality.

Are you planning to start your next international business presentation(讲座) with a little joke to break the ice? Well, you might want to reconsider.

The story is told of a businessman who gave a speech in a foreign country through an interpreter(口译员).Without warning the interpreter, he told a joke during the presentation. The interpreter knew the joke would not translate, so she said,This man just told a joke that he thinks is funny, but it does not translate well, and you will not find it funny at all.So, when I stop talking, everyone please just laugh.

The audience did indeed laugh aloud, but not for the reason the speaker supposed. The businessman was so pleased with the first result that he went on to tell another joke.

Each culture has different understandings of humour. What may be funny in one culture can be far from funny in another.

For example, while living in Chile, I often tried to share great jokes from the United States, only to be met with questions like, Oh, is that a joke? Is that funny in your country? Similarly, Chileans shared their own popular jokes that were not always funny to me.

In September 2001, Professor Richard Wiseman and the British Association for the Advancement of Science created a project called LaughLab in order to find the world's funniest joke. And in one year, LaughLab received more than 40,000 jokes.

The following joke is considered the world's funniest joke by LaughLab:

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls down.He doesn't seem to be breathing. The other man calls the emergency services. He says,My friend is dead! What can I do? The operator says, Calm down.I can help.First, let's make sure he's dead. There is a silence, then a shot is heard.Back on the phone, the guy says,OK, now what?’”

If you decide you must share a joke or two in another country, ask the opinion of your interpreter first.Otherwise, the joke may be on you.

( )12.Why did the audience laugh?

A.The joke was funny.   B.They were told to do so.

C.The interpreter made a mistake.   D.The businessman was humorous.

( )13.How did the businessman feel after finishing the joke?

    A.Stupid.   B.Strange.

    C.Moved.   D.Encouraged.

( )14.Why does the author mention his own experience?

    A.To show Chileans are impolite.

B.To show humour is related to culture.

C.To show Chileans have no sense of humour.

D.To show it's hard to understand American humour.

( )15.Why does the hunter shoot his friend?

A.His friend is in great pain.

B.The operator asks him to do so.

C.He is too worried to know what to do.

D.He misunderstands the meaning of make sure

So, when I stop talking, everyone please just laugh.

The businessman was so pleased with the first result that he went on to tell another joke.

Each culture has different understandings of humour.

The operator says, Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.’”

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner. One reason was:You'll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym’”可知,这里陈述另一个和别人一起锻炼的理由。 You'll work harder if you train with someone else.

First of all, decide what you want from that person.和后文Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?,又根据关键信息Or以及or后面的问句,可确定空格处应该也是一个类似结构的问句,可确定答案在D或E中。 Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?

You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but probably won't result in a useful response.和后文If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.

My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age.It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. Any notice for a training partner should include such information.

You and your partner will probably have different skills.和后文Over time, both of you will benefit-your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit.可知,different skillsboth of you will benefit暗示要学会求同存异,一起合作,共同提高。所以F项Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.

Psychologists say that__32__ is the most important thing in parent-child relationships.Parents should__33__ to their children but at the same time they should lend an ear to what they have to say.Parents may__34__their children when they are untidy but they should also understand that their room is their own private space.Communication is a two-way process. It is only by listening to and __35__ each other that problems between parents and children can be settled.

    One possible version:

    Dear Lily,

We hosted a great party on Youth Day in our classroom. The party began at 4:00 in the afternoon and lasted two hours. Chinese traditional art, Xiangsheng, was performed by two boys, which impressed us very much. One boy did an amazing imitation of Charlie Chaplin, and he pretended to chew some leather shoes. He gave an outstanding performance, as Charlie Chaplin did in his famous film, The Gold Rush.

We were really surprised at the magic power of humour. It made us laugh and feel happy and relaxed. I can't imagine what our life would be like without humour.

I am looking forward to your reply.

    Yours,

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbours' home.He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters: The house next door is on fire! He went to investigate. That's when he saw a woman crying desperately on their porch.

The baby's in there! the woman cried.Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside. The baby was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter.

Entering the burning house was like running into a bucket of black paint, Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous to anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath.Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long.Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming.Yet because the house had a similar layout(布局) to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat.He was already out of breath.

His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air.Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan(呻吟声) emerged.Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.

Finally, he touched something a shoe, then an ankle._________________________

    One possible version:

Finally,_he_touched_something-a_shoe,_then_an_ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. Her body was weak and she wasn't breathing. He hugged her into his arms and stood. He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blackness. Surrell put Tiara down on the porch. He started CPR-the first time he' d ever done so. Soon she opened her eyes and took a breath on her own. Surrel's throat closed off.

Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later.___________________________ __

    ________________________________________________________________________

    One possible version:

Surrell_woke_up_in_the_hospital_a_couple_of_days_later._He suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. The fire worsened Surrell's pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. It' s a small price to pay, he says. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn't give it a second thought.
