Electric vehicles (电动汽车) have been around for more than a hundred years. But they have really been liked by a large number of people 16 the past ten years. More than three million all-electric cars and trucks are now on the road worldwide.
    Helping the Environment
Most cars run on petrol (汽油). Burning petrol and other fossil fuels (化石燃料) produces greenhouse gases (气体). Electric vehicles don’t burn petrol. 17 , strong batteries (电池) run their electric engines (引擎). So, electric vehicles 18 produce greenhouse gases.
    Poop Power
Electric vehicles are better for the environment. But they are not perfect. Their batteries often use electricity 19 was made by burning fossil fuels. But an electric vehicle uses 20 energy than a vehicle that runs on petrol. Besides, some of the electricity comes from “greener” sources (来源), 21 wind power. And some may soon come from a new source-cow poop (牛粪)! An electric car company has worked together with a large farm. They plan to make 22 from cow poop.
    Always Improving
One of the problems for electric vehicles is their limited range (有限的范围). This is 23 they can travel before their batteries need another charge (充电). But now their range is improving. Some new electric vehicles can travel almost three times 24 as older ones did. Another problem is finding a place to recharge the batteries. But the number of charging stations 25 also going up. In Sweden, engineers have even designed (设计) a road that will charge electric vehicles as they drive along.

Madison Checketts loves beaches. 26 she often sees the sand covered with plastic bottles. “This needed to change,” she told Smithsonian magazine.
The 27 girl from the US created a new kind of water bottle. People can 28 eat it! The idea comes from the “popping boba (爆爆珠)” in bubble tea drinks. A thin piece of jelly (胶状物) keeps the juice 29 .
Checketts learned 30 to make this online. She put some chemicals (化学物质) together. Then she froze 31 to make the jelly. After some tries, she made her own “bubble” with water inside!
People can bite a hole at the top of the bubble, drink the water and then either eat the “bottle” 32 throw it away. It can breakdown without polluting the environment. Checketts said the bottle felt like candies and 33 a bit sweet.
In the future, Checketts will run more tests to make the water bottle 34 and bigger. She wants her water bottle to be used during sports—as the players like runners 35 for water, they can get a bubble, drink the water and either eat or throw it away. “I hope people can understand that everyone can make the world a better place,” she said.

The company OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world. It is the latest type of AI chatboxes. A chatbox is a computer program just like human conversation. Anyone can use ChatGPT for free now so that the company can collect people’s ideas on how to improve it.
People have tested how ChatGPT works. Reporters found out that it was able to write articles with rightful opinions for newspapers. Teachers asked it to write answers to exam questions. ChatGPT could almost get full marks. Even programmers, people who write computer code, tried out ChatGPT. It is able to solve difficult coding challenges and answer very quickly. It even wrote short poems to explain how the coding worked. In our daily life, it helped a father brainstorm ideas of a birthday party for his son that combines the kid’s two favorites, rabbits and basketball.
Moreover, when people ask ChatGPT questions, it can find mistakes. If it is asked what happened when Columbus arrived in America in 2023, older AIs might give a story. ChatGPT can recognize that Columbus reached America in the 1400s. It can also refuse to answer questions that are not proper. For example, ask it for advice on stealing a car. It will say that stealing a car is a serious crime and can have bad results. Instead, it gives advice such as “taking the bus”.
ChatGPT might help people solve problems, but the AI is trained using texts from the Internet. Often, the texts are used without being allowed by the writers of those texts. Some argue that technology doesn’t respect people’s work. Some argue that people will use the ChatGPT to copy others’ work and sell it as their own. In 2015, Elon Musk set up OpenAI, but left it in 2017. In 2022, he bought Twitter and then he pointed out that OpenAI could use the Twitter database for training in the past, but not for now. Some think this AI technology is bad for the earth, too. Training ChatGPT might make more than 284 tons of CO2 and lead to climate change that will heat up the earth.

Boyan Slat is a 17-year-old Dutch boy. He has been dreaming of cleaning up the world’s oceans for a long time.
In 2010, he went on a diving vacation in Greece and was surprised. “I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water,” he said.
From then on, he began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. Slat decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup, a Non-Government Organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world’s first ocean cleanup system with his team.
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down. In 2018, the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050.
Sea animals easily get trapped in plastic so that they can’t move. They can even die if they eat it. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain and end up in our bodies.
Slat’s plan was to create an environmentally-friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.
After seven years of tests, on Oct. 2, 2019, a device called System 001/B came out. It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean.
Slat and his team are working to improve System 001/B.Their dream is to clear out 90 percent of all the ocean plastic by 2040.
61.Boyan Slat found ________ while diving in Greece.

63.The underlined word “trapped” in Paragraph 5 most probably means ________.
    A.surprised B.interested C.excited D.caught
64.What do we know about System 001/B?
A.It will come out by 2040. B.It was difficult to create this system.
C.It will clean all of the rubbish in the ocean. D.It only catches small pieces of plastic litter.

Mattel is known for making children’s toys. The company recently used an AI image generator called DALL-E to come up with ideas for new toy cars The used vehicle seller CarMax is using ChatGPT to gather thousands of customer comments. The social media service Snapchat has added a chatbot to its messaging service. And Instacart, a delivery service, now uses ChatGPT to answer food questions.
Even the Coca-Cola company plans to use AI to help create new marketing content. It has not said exactly how it plans to use the technology. But the move shows that businesses are under stress to use the tools that many of their employees and customers are already trying on their own.
“We must take the risks,” Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey said in a video announcing a partnership with OpenAI—maker of both DALL-E and ChatGPT. Some experts warn that businesses should carefully consider possible harms to customers, society, and their own companies before choosing to use AI tools in the workplace.
Claire Leibowicz is with The Partnership on AI, a non-profit group. “I want people to think deeply before using this technology,” Leibowicz said. “They should play around….but we should also think, what purpose are these tools serving in the first place?” There is a reason for the concern.
While text generators like ChatGPT can make the process of writing emails and marketing documents faster and easier, they also appear to present misinformation as fact.
And image generators like DALL-E are trained in copying widely available digital art and photography. This has raised copyright concerns from the creators of those works. “For companies that are really in the creative industry, if they want to make sure that they have copyright protection for those models, that's still an open question,” said Anna Gressel. She is with the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, which advises businesses on how to use AI.
Gressel said it is safer to use AI tools as a “thought partner” but still people as the creator of final products.
Rowan Curran is with the research and advisory company Forrester. He said AI tools should speed up some office work much like using word processors and spell checkers.
The growing interest in AI tools among the public has fueled growing competition among technology companies Microsoft, Amazon and Google.
Microsoft announced earlier this year it was spending billions more dollars on its partnership with OpenAI. Google is adding Bard chatbot to its search engine. And Amazon started working with Hugging Face to develop Bloom, a competitor to ChatGPT.
65.The writer mentioned several companies from Paragraph 1 to 2 to ________.

(Ned, Conceil and I were taken to the ship. Captain Nemo showed us around. He led us into a room as a museum with a great deal of collection and then took us to the library and the galley (画廊).)
Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and the ship—the Nautilus. Then, he took me to my cabin (房舱). It was a very comfortable bedroom and was next to his cabin. His cabin had an instrument panel (仪表板), and on this he could see everything that he needed to know to sail the Nautilus.
He told me that he had found a way to make electricity using salt and mercury (汞). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps (泵) filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise. I was surprised to find that the Nautilus even had a small dinghy (小艇). Captain Nemo could enter the dinghy from the Nautilus while it was underwater and go to the surface. Then, the Nautilus would come up to collect him. As we walked to the engine room (发动机舱), we passed the large kitchen and crew (船员) room. The door of the crew room was closed, so I could not see how many men were asked to work on the Nautilus.
Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. It was difficult to understand how the tanks, rudders and batteries worked. However, I had to believe it because the engine was working! The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500tons. A pilot sat in a small room with strong windows, and a powerful electric light showed him where he was going.
    “It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed.
“I love it as if it were my child.” he replied.
“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.”
“It must have cost a great deal of money!” I exclaimed again.
“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions.”

Scientists have been hoping to explore the moon with robots. But the land on the moon is tough. There are steep (陡峭的) hills, big rocks and holes. It is hard for common robots to move around. A small robot called COBRA is here to help.
Students from Northeastern University in the US made COBRA.It won the top prize in NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game changing (BIG) Idea Challenge. The robot is made up of 13 mini-bots. It looks like a snake. It can wiggle (扭动) in the sand and down a dirt road. It can connect its head to its tail to roll down long and steep hills. Its spiral structure (螺旋结构) helps it move out of tough places more easily.
Why do we need robots on the moon? One of NASA’s biggest goals in the coming years is to put humans back on the moon. They did it more than 50 years ago. But this time, they hope to stay on the moon and set up a base (基地). “If you’re going back to the moon to stay, robots are going to be an important part of it,” said NASA engineer Vandi Verma. She is also one of the judges (裁判) of the BIG Idea Challenge.
NASA wants to build the base in an area on the moon’s south pole (南极). That area may have frozen water, which is important for humans. But the area is full of steep hills and holes. NASA turns to young people for their out-of-the-box ideas. At the BIG Idea Challenge, teams from different universities came up with all kinds of solutions (解决方案).

Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains broke the only power cables (电缆线) in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps (灯), which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases (气体) they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a new lamp that can be powered by plants and soil (土壤), both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb (灯泡).
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the ideas is quite simple. As plants create their food, they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Small animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons (电荷). The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy and keep it in the lamp for later use.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa several years ago. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp can keep helping to improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.

Have you heard of the APP ChatGPT? 82 It offers private and group chats, emojis, stickers, images, and videos, and makes conversations more interesting and attractive. The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer questions, admit its mistakes and refuse improper requirements. 83 However, an APP named GPTZero can help to prevent that.
Edward Tian is a computer science student at Princeton University. The 22-year- old created GPTZero in response to(作为回应) the widespread use of ChatGPT. According to the student, the software is able to respond quickly and correctly. In only a few seconds, it can tell you if a given text is written by AI or a human.
84 These texts help it to find out whether an article is the work of AI or not. 八、阅读回答问题

How will geography affect your life? For some children around the world, the environment they grow up in has a huge effect on their lives. This is the case in Madagascar, an island country in Africa, where a 3D-printed school is now being built.
Maggie Grout was just 15 years old when she set up a non-profit organization-Thinking Huts. Now 22, she is raising money to build a series of 3D-printed school powered by solar energy. She led the whole process from start to finish, working with university professors. They chose Madagascar because it needs more schools. Many children in that country don’t have the chance to have access to education. Besides, it has a lot of sunshine, which can be made into energy to power things.
Maggie then drew a design for the school. She thought about what the people might need and where they worked best.
Next, Maggie found an architect and 3D printing company for the job. To make it environmentally friendly, they use a special 3D printer to build the school. It meant up to 50 percent less concrete (混凝土) used and less CO2. Plus, the school could be completed in just a week. They also used local materials to build the doors, windows and roof.
What’s more, Thinking Huts trained local workers to use a 3D printer so that they could build more schools on their own in the future. Maggie plans to print more new schools in other parts of Madagascar because one in five children don’t have the chance to attend primary school there.

So far, Grouts charity has already raised $125,000. “It’s not so bad to me! Of course, we need more.” Maggie told Spring wise website.

    My invention: Super Shoes
I hope to invent a kind of super shoes.
Many of us may have to throw away our shoes when they are too small for our feet. This is a great waste. And lost shoes are also bad for the environment. If I could invent a kind of super shoes, there would be no such waste.
This kind of shoes is made of a special material, which can grow with your feet and always fit your feet. You don’t have to worry about your shoes being too small or too tight. In addition, if the shoes are dirty, they will start the automatic cleaning function between 12:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., and it will automatically dry. So your shoes always look clean. If you walk too much, there will be a massage function at the bottom of the shoes to help you relax your feet.
These shoes can not only help us save some time for cleaning and massage, but also are environmentally friendly. It is also good for us to protect the environment. The most important thing is that the shoes are cheap.
    152.例文
If I had a chance to create a robot
If I had a chance to create a robot, I would create one for myself. It will do a lot of things for me. I think my study and life will be much easier.
The robot can not only help me with my study, but also play an important role in daily life. First, it will help me study. I won’t have to go to after-school classes. I will study at home. Second, it will cook different kinds of delicious food for me. That way, my mom won’t get very tired. And when I feel sad, it will talk with me like a friend and make me happy.
In a word, robots can bring us a lot of convenience.
