    1. Enable the students to review the different kinds of formation of English.
    2. Guide the students to improve the students’ listening skills and ability.

    2. Understand the main idea of the listening materials and get some detailed information.

    Teaching methods:

    Teaching procedures:
    Step1:Lead-in
    1. The teacher leads the students into the new lesson by reviewing the words“pineapple and basketball”.The teacher can inspire the students to think by asking some questions:
    T:Is there any relationship between “pineapple” and “apple”?Can you eat an apple in pineapple?
    Ss:...
    T:Can you give me some more examples like this?
    Ss:...
    T:Can you find the rule of this kind of words?
    Ss:..
    2. After the warming up, the students must have got the idea of “word formation”.Then the teacher explains the meaning of each word formation.
    Suggested answers:
    Abbreviation:a word is made up of the first letter of several words.
    例如:very important person--VIP重要的人;大人物
    Conversion: to create a new word without any change in spelling
    (1) 动词转名词:
    例如:①Let’s go out for a walk.我们到外面去散散步吧
    ②He is a man of strong build.他是一个体格健壮的男人。
    (2) 名词转动词:
    例如:①Did you book a seat on the plane?你定好飞机座位了吗?
    ②Please hand me the book.请把那本书递给我。
    ③We lunched together.我们在一起吃了午餐。
    Compounding:two or more words are joined together to make a new one.
    例如:snow-white;high-class; classroom; eggplant
    Derivation: to create a new word by using prefix and suffix
    例如:appear出现--disappear消失;possible可能的--impossible不可能的;large大的--enlarge扩大
    Step2:Word formation
    1.Have a look at Activity 1 on Page 17.Match the words in bold to the types of word formation.
    2.Ask the students to try to divide the following words according to different word formation.
    watermelon,schoolwork,USA,sunshine,toothache,impossible,bookstore,national,mooncake,DJ,restroom,chopstick,impolite,textbook,warmth,bathroom,disagree,PM,butterfly,snowman
