A hippo(河马) lived in a river next to a big tree.
One day, a bird came and nested(筑巢) in the tree. The songs of the bird filled the hippo with so much envy(羡慕) that he couldn't think of anything else. Every day he would think why he wasn't born to be a bird even though the bird told him many times he was so lucky to be so big and such a good swimmer.
Finally, the hippo decided to climb the tree, and start singing. However, when he tried to climb the tree, it was very clear that the hippo didn't have wings, nor claws to climb with.
Realizing that he would never climb up the tree, he angrily hit the tree until it came crashing to the ground. Then he stepped onto the leaves of the fallen tree, and began singing.
Unfortunately(不幸的是), hippos can't sing, either. All that came from his mouth were terrible noises, and when the other animals heard this, they all came around to make fun of the hippo.

Cheetahs (猎豹) and other wild cats are in danger of dying out because they have few places to live in and people hunt them. Can we help big cats (大型猫科动物) in danger? Wildlife scientists hope so. They are trying to protect the cats by teaching people about the situation and making laws to keep the animals safer. Cheetahs are the world's fastest land animals. Most cheetahs live in Africa. In the past 100 years, the number of cheetahs living in the wild has dropped from 100, 000 to less than 12, 000.
Good news is here for cheetahs at the Saint Louis Zoo. Three cheetah babies that were born in November are growing up at the Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri. “The babies are doing great, ”the zoo's worker Steve Bircher said. “They are very active and playing with each other or with Mom. ”
By raising cheetah babies, the zoo is working to save cheetahs from dying out. The zoo is also helping protect cheetahs in the wild. “We want children to know that cheetahs are in danger, ” said Bircher. “It is important to protect their living places. ”
( )67. Why are cheetahs and other wild cats in danger of dying out?
A. Because people hunt them.
B. Because they are easy to get ill.
C. Because they have nothing to eat.
D. Because people send them to the zoo.
( )68. Which is TRUE about cheetahs?
A. They are the world's fastest animals.
B. Most of the cheetahs live in Africa.

D. There are about 100, 000 of them in the wild now.
( )69. How does the Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri help cheetahs?
A. By raising cheetah babies.
B. By making laws to keep them safe.
C. By sending cheetah babies to the wild.
D. By building more and more houses for them.

Blue whales are the biggest animals on earth. They live in the oceans around the world. Most blue whales can live for more than 80 years. But now, sadly, many whales are dying from one thing: plastic(塑料).
Human beings use too much plastic. People are polluting the oceans. When you throw plastic away, it doesn't just disappear. Over 90 percent of the world's plastic doesn't get recycled(回收利用). A lot of plastic ends up in the ocean.
Most of the whales do not know the danger of plastic. They think it is food. But in fact, plastic is poisonous. Last year, a whale died with 40 kilograms of plastic in his stomach.
Worse still, whales can easily become entangled (缠住) in plastic in the ocean, such as waste fishing nets and ropes. They can cause injuries. Whales have to spend lots of energy swimming with those heavy loads.
lt's important for us to protect blue whales. Please stop using too much plastic! Maybe one plastic bag or one coffee cup won't make a big difference. However, when 7. 8 billion people all start to use a little less plastic, it will make a huge difference to whales and, one day, to humans as well!
( )70. A blue whale can live to be more than ____ years old in general.
A. 40 B. 80 C. 90 D. 100
( )71. Many blue whales have plastic in their stomachs because ____.

The king of animals—the tiger
Tigers are big and strong. They have very bright eyes. They live in the forests or in the mountains. They live mainly on small animals. They can run fast, but only for a short while. They are good at swimming and climbing.
People can make medicine from their bones and make clothes out of their fur. Some people hunt them for their bones or fur. The number of tigers is becoming smaller and smaller these years. There are about 4,000 wild tigers left in the world now.
Tigers are now in danger. We should take action to protect them.
