“Colour” and “color”, “favourite” and “favorite”, … Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a “u”? Is it because they are lazy?
Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by a teacher named Noah Webster. He changed English to make American identity(特征) stronger.
After the Revolutionary War(独立战争), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary and that they shouldn’t rely on British ones. He took away the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like they sounded. He used “subway” instead of(代替) British word “underground”. Some other words are “soccer” and “football”, “fall” and “autumn”.
Webster spent 28 years finishing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spellings in 1828. He also brought in local words. Most American schools use his dictionary. People believe it helped a new country get unity(统一) and cultural independence(文化独立).
“He was the maker of our language and the maker of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is writing a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”
71.Why do Americans spell some words without a “u”?
A.Because Americans are lazy enough to take it away.
B.Because American English changed when people used it.
C.Because the USA government(政府) changed the spelling of words.
D.Because a teacher named Noah Webster started the change in spelling.
72.Which is NOT true about Webster’s dictionary?
A.It has local words in it. B.It is a 70,000-word dictionary.
C.All the words are spelled without “u”. D.Its words are in American-style spelling.
73.What does the underlined phrase “rely on” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.依赖 B.改革 C.容忍 D.放弃
74.What do people think of Webster’s dictionary?
A.It is only a dictionary that Americans still use today.
B.It brought Americans together through language and cultrue.
C.It wasn’t popular among Americans or Englishmen.
D.It made American English more useful than British English.
75.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.British English disappeared(消失) after the Revolutionary War.

C.Noah Webster took away the British “u” in some words.
D.Noah Webster brought in local words to his dictionary.

By Janet Lee
Mary had a yellow dress
Bought from the department store.
It looked as beautiful as the moon,
And as bright as the sun.
Mary wore all the time
The yellow dress I felt so right.
Every day from day to night
I saw her in the dress so bright.
“Buy me a yellow dress,”
I cried to Mom and Dad,
“As beautiful and bright
As the dress the girl living near has!”
I cried and cried and cried,
Until they said with sad eyes,

(2022春·江苏扬州·七年级校考期末)It’s not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New study shows that a gardening program in schools can increase (增加) children’s vegetable intake (摄入量).
How the Study Was Carried Out
The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening program for one school year. Every child in grade 3-5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the program, each school built a garden, where children leaned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.
The Benefits (益处) Children Could Get
The study found that children’s vegetable intake increased greatly across the year. Not only are there benefits to health, increasing the variety (品种) of vegetables children are exposed (接触) to may also make mealtimes much easier. “Children who are often exposed to different kinds of vegetables are more likely to try new foods”, explains Dr Kerry Jones.
▲
Any chance to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage (鼓励) this interest,” says Jones. Parents and children can also read books about vegetables together. Besides, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.

Do you believe that self-driving cars—cars without drivers will bring food to you in the near future? That sounds interesting, doesn’t it?
Now Baidu and Meituan are working together to use self-driving technology (技术) to deliver food. They are going to make some self-driving cars.
