Owls (猫头鹰) are active (活跃的) mainly at night. They hunt when it’s dark. Most of us people go for our work and study in the daytime. We almost never see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures (文化). No matter how far you go back, there is always some type of art work or story that includes an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos (标识), in children’s books, etc. So what makes owls so popular?
Some bird researchers (研究者) believe owls’ popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. In order to see clearly in the dark, owls have evolved (进化) to have large eyes. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical (圆筒状的). So owls cannot roll (翻转) their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided — the left ear is a little higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction (方向) a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s whole face acts like a satellite dish (圆盘式卫星接收器) for sound waves. Their beaks (鸟喙) are very small so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as strange and wonderful animals. For a long time, people made up lots of myths(神话) about them. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom (智慧女神). Some say owls are witches (女巫) in disguise (伪装). These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made them become more popular!

B.Their beaks are very small.
C.Their faces are like satellite dishes.

(2022春·江苏扬州·七年级统考期末)The right plants can make your home more beautiful, and even make the air in the room cleaner. However, not everyone has a “green thumb”.
The good news is that there are a few things you can do to take good care of plants in your home. Here are a few tips to help you look after house plants.
Choose the right plants.
It’s true that some plants are hard to take care of. Plants like orchids and azaleas, although beautiful to look at, are difficult to keep alive. If you are not good at gardening, these plants won’t last very long in your home.
________, but that doesn’t mean you should give up keeping plants in your home. There are different kinds of plants that are much easier to take care of and that will grow well with very little care. Many are also lovely and pleasing to the eye. For example, the Bird of Paradise Indoor Plant is great for those who don’t have much experience taking care of plants.
Know a plant’s lighting needs
Many people who want to have plants in the home care about watering their plants without knowing how much light the plants need. Sunlight is an important part of a plant’s ability to produce food for itself. Thankfully, shopkeepers usually put a note on most plants to tell how much sunlight a plant needs through the day. Those that need quite a lot should be put by a window. Others can be put further inside a room or in a corner where they will only get a bit of light each day.

(2022春·江苏扬州·七年级统考期末)The children stand in a line in front of Hook. “The Lost Boys must die!” he shouts. “They must all walk the plank and their mother must watch them. Tie her to the mast, Smee!”
Smee ties Wendy to the mast.
“Listen, honey,” Hook whispers. “I don’t want to kill you! Promise to be my mother! Please! And I can let you go!” “I don’t want to be your mother,” she replies coldly. “And I certainly don’t want pirates for children.” Wendy turns her head and looks away.
Hook wants to turn her head back and make her watch the boys as they die. He wants to hear her cry. But just then he hears another noise instead. It is the tick-tock of the crocodile. Hook suddenly changes. He looks very afraid. He falls on the floor. The tick-tock comes nearer and nearer.
“Hide me!” Hook says in a frightened voice. The pirates run to their captain and stand around him. They don’t want to look at the crocodile so they shut their eyes.
The Lost Boys are curious (好奇). They run to the side of the ship to see the ticking beast. But they get a big surprise! It isn’t the crocodile. It’s Peter! He’s making the tick-tock noise and he’s coming to help them. Peter climbs on the ship and he goes very quietly and quickly into the cabin. The ticking stops and the pirates open their eyes and look around.
“It’s safe for you to come out now, captain,” Smee says.
Hook’s head slowly appears and he stands up. He feels silly now and his face turns red. Then he feels angry with himself. He must show the boys that he really is a fierce and cruel (凶残的) pirate. He decides to frighten them before they walk the plank.
“Get the cat o’nine tails, Jukes!” he shouts. ‘It’s in the cabin.”

“He doesn’t even like us,” Winston shouted.
“Eggs,” I said quietly.
“Eggs?” Stewart asked.
“Eggs!” I called out.
I went to the kitchen and took out something useful. Mom helped me show the boys how to decorate (点缀) eggs the way my grandma had taught us. The way they do it in the old country. We made designs on the eggshells with hot wax, then dyed (染色) them and finally melted (融化) the wax off.

Is it possible to go online, talk with your friends on apps, or even read a map on your coat in the near future? Yes, your coat!
It is what scientists are working on. Professor Peng Huisheng and his team at Fudan University have made a new kind of cloth. We can use it as a digital screen. They spend 12 years trying to make “digital cloth”. The first is to find out the right thread. After checking many of them, they choose two special ones. One can light up, and the other is conductive.
The coat will be great. You can not only fold it, but also wash it. The researchers wash it 500 times and fold it 1,000 times. But the coat is almost unchanged. That’s because this coat is made of a kind of light and soft but strong fibers and fits people well. You can wear it just like any other coat. The difference is that it can work like a smartphone. It is just like putting a phone screen into the coat. Wear it and then it can show you a lot of information you want.
Professor Peng believes that the new coat can be used in many ways. For example, a driver or a bicycle rider can use it as a GPS map on his or her arm when travelling around. It can also help people who can’t hear or speak to talk with others. In the hospital, the doctor can get the health data of a patient through his coat. That helps look after them better.

We often buy piggy banks to save our pocket money, but do you ever wonder why people liked to make their banks in the shape of a pig?
Pigs have nothing to do with money. They don’t store(存储) food like a camel or a squirrel. So how did we end up using a pig as the style of a bank? Believe it or not, it happened by mistake.
During the fifteenth century, metal was very expensive. Dishes and pots were made of a type of inexpensive orange clay(黏土) called “pygg”, which sounds just like pig when people read it. At this time, there weren’t banks like we have today, so people would store their money at home.
When people had extra(额外的) coins to save, they would place them in clay jars or pots. Since the type of clay was called “pygg”, people called the jars “pygg” banks. Over time this turned into piggy banks.
After a few hundred years, people forgot that the word “pygg” meant the clay, which the banks were made from. The English language was also changing and the word pig was more widely used. So in the nineteenth century, when English potters began to make piggy banks, they thought mistakenly their customers were asking for banks in the shape of pigs, not banks made from “pygg”.
Today piggy banks are made from all kinds of materials, and they also come in a variety of shapes of animals. But the term piggy bank is still used.

Beep! Beep! Barcode(条形码) technology makes it faster and easier to buy things in shops. Today, barcodes are scanned(扫描) over 6 billion times every day and used by more than 2 million companies all over the world.
It has been a great invention(发明). In 1971, IBM engineer George Laurer invented a code which could be printed on food labels(标签). He is also known as the father of the Universal Product Code(通用的产品代码) which has been used by many food companies since 1973.
There is lots of information in a barcode, such as what the product is, when and where the product is made, the price and so on. Because of this, barcodes can also help shopkeepers keep track of their products (产品跟踪). For example, if there are 10 cartons of milk in stock(库存) and a consumer (消费者) buys one, it will be recorded so that the shopkeeper knows there are nine left. In the 1980s, libraries started using barcodes to keep track of books in this way as well. “This invention made the first digitization(数字化) in the control of the stock come true.” José María Bonmatí from AECOC said.
The next generation(代) of barcodes, such as QR codes(二维码), can hold more information. They can tell consumers if a product has any allergens(过敏原) or if it is organic(有机的). This can help consumers pick up what they will buy easily.

I lately gave my adult(成人)class homework, which was to “Go to someone you love and tell them you love them.” The person has to be someone you have never said those words to or haven’t shared those words with for a long time.
That sounds like an easy task, but some of the male students in my class were over 35 and were taught that expressing feelings easily is not “macho (男子汉的)”.
In the next class, I asked if anyone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. One of the men, Roy raised his hand. But he appeared quite moved and seemed to shake slightly.
Roy began, “At first, I didn’t feel that I had anyone to say those words to. But as I began driving home, I knew exactly who I needed to say ‘I love you’ to. Five years ago, my father and I had a quarrel(吵架)and never solved it. We hardly spoke to each other since then.” After a short break, he went on. “The next morning after last class, I called my dad. When he answered the phone, I said, ‘Dad, can I come over tonight? I have something to tell you.’ I told him it wouldn’t take long, he finally agreed.”
“At 5:30, I was at my parents’, ringing the doorbell. As luck would have it, Dad answered the door. I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’”
“His face softened, his wrinkles(皱纹)disappeared and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’”
“Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and I hadn’t felt that great for such a long time. Two days after the visit, my dad had a heart attack and ended up with unconscious (昏迷) in the hospital. I don’t know if he’ll make it.”

(2022春·江苏南京·七年级校联考期末)The Metaverse Is Having a Moment
Last October, CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed his company’s name from Facebook to Meta. He said the metaverse was not only the future of his company, but also the future of the Internet. His words sent lots of people running to look up the word “metaverse” in their dictionaries.
The thing is, the word isn’t new. It comes from Snow Crash, a 1992 science-fiction book by American writer Neal Stephenson. In the book, humans live through their avatars in a virtual world called the metaverse. Today the metaverse is still being created and understood and not everyone agrees on how it should come about. However, we are starting to get some idea as tech companies have begun to build it. The metaverse is believed to be a shared 3-D virtual world and now we can do real-life things like meeting friends, exercising or taking classes in it. Zuckerberg believes almost anything people can do in real life can be done in the metaverse in the close future.
Picture this. Zhang Yixing is putting on a big concert in Beijing and you are too busy to go to the city for it. When the concert begins, instead of watching it online, you put on a VR headset and come to the virtual concert. You sit, listen and shout with other fans. You even shake hands and talk with your idol. How exciting!
The recent growing interest in the metaverse can be seen as a result of COVD-19. As more people have started working from home, there has been an increasing need for ways to make online interaction(互动)more lifelike.
Zuckerberg said it might take around ten years for the metaverse to arrive. Are you looking forward to it?
