“You called him ‘Fat Face’,” the judge said. Toad had no answer to this. Then Badger stood up. “May I say a few words?” he said. “Certainly, Mr, Badger,” the judge said.
“I knew his father,” Badger said. “I knew his uncle and his aunt. He is a sad, foolish animal. We should all feel sorry for him.”
Badger sat down.
The judge said. “It is lunch time and I am hungry, so I don’t want to listen to anything more. It is clear that you are guilty, Toad. And this court must punish you. You will go to prison(监狱)for twenty years. Have you anything to say?”
Toad was very unhappy. Twenty years in prison was a very long time. He stood up as tall as he could and said, “No, Fat Face.”
He turned to everyone in the court. “You are all Fat Faces. I am Toad. The Great and Famous Toad. You cannot send me to prison!”
“Oh, yes, I can,” the judge said. “And you will go to prison for forty years for calling me ‘Fat Face’.” Then the judge said to the policemen, “Take him away.”
And they led Toad away to prison.
Poor Toad was very unhappy in prison. His room was small and very cold. The food was bad, and the bed was hard. Toad could not sleep, and he usually felt quit ill.
Luckily, however, one of the jailer’s daughters liked him. She also felt sorry for him. Her name was Phoebe. She worked in the prison and brought Toad his food every day.
“I don’t think you should be here, Toad,” she said.
“You didn’t hurt anybody. The only thing you did wrong was to call the judge ‘Fat Face’.” She didn’t know that he had stolen a car. The judge had not sent him to prison for that. He had sent him to prison for calling him ‘Fat Face’. “And you are right,” she said. “The judge does have a fat face. It’s wrong to keep you in prison for that.” “That’s what I tell myself every day,” Toad said. “I am the Great and Famous Toad. I live at Toad Hall. I have many friends.”
With Phoebe’s help, Toad dressed up as a washerwoman and left the prison later.

Do you know how many bones(骨头)are there in your body? When you were a baby you had about 330 bones, and now you have just over 200 bones. Because some bones join together as you grow.
The longest and strongest bone in your body is in your leg. It is strong and it carries your weight. It is also a very important bone because it helps you move. Would you believe there is a special bone called stirrup(镫骨)in your ear? Because it’s the smallest bone in your body. The bone allows the sound waves(声波)to reach your brain, then you hear the sound. Hah! The funny bone isn’t really a bone at all. It is actually a nerve(神经). That bone is called the humerus(肱骨), which sounds like the word “humorous”, meaning “funny”.

She picked up the key and went back to the door. But she was too big now. She sat down and started to cry again. She cried and cried and cried. Her tears fell on the ground and soon there was a pool of water around her.
PITTER, PATTER, PITTER, PATTER. She looked up. The White Rabbit was running towards her. He had a fan in one hand and a pair of white gloves in the other. As he ran he muttered. “Oh, the Duchess(公爵夫人)! The Duchess. She’s going to be very angry.”
Alice whispered “Sir, please”, but her voice frightened the Rabbit. He dropped the fan and the gloves and ran away quickly down a dark passage. Alice put the key on the table, picked up the gloves and the fan and started to fan herself.
“How strange everything is today,” she said sadly. “Yesterday things were normal. Did I change during the night? Am I a different girl today? If I am a different girl, who am I? Am I Mabel?” (Mabel was a girl at Alice’s school)
“No, I can’t be! I know a lot of things and she knows—well, only a few.”

She looked down and saw that she was wearing the Rabbit’s gloves!
“How did that happen?” she wondered. “Am I getting smaller?” She was! She was getting smaller all the time.”
“It must be the fan!” She thought, and she dropped it just before she disappeared completely.
“Good! I can go to the garden now,” she said. But when she got to the door, it was locked. And the key was on the table! And she was too small to reach the top of it!
“Oh dear!” She sighed. “What am I going to do now?”
Suddenly—SPLASH!

Homestays give people cheap places to stay and good chances (机会) to see the area like local people. They are popular with people who want to study or spend holidays in another country. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.

Our two-bed house is near the sea in the south-west of the UK. It’s about five minutes’ drive to the nearest village. There are many beaches, rivers and forests and it’s very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading, watching films and going for walks. Our area is fit for sports. You can surf, go hiking and ride horses in the mountain. However, the houses here are expensive.
