六、阅读单选
Q: At recess (课间休息), I don’t know what to do because all my friends are playing games I don’t like or don’t want to play. So I end up standing by myself at recess doing nothing. What should I do?
Alex Rider, 13, Bloomfield, N.J.
A: In fact, recess was my least favorite part of the school day for Grades 1 to 5. I was never really into playing kickball. So, like you, I spent many days at recess standing alone. Take advantage of the extra time you have. I learned that reading a book is the best way to pass time, especially if it is sunny. Books are good for a lonely recess, because they take you out of your world and into another. If reading isn’t your thing, then try making new friends. Some other things I would do at recess were chess and paper cutting. Those might be worth trying. Maybe the teacher who is watching over all the kids needs someone to talk to as well. Whatever you want to do, don’t let your time go to waste. Johnny Hayes,15 |
| A: Do you believe in time travel, Alex? Because you just dragged me 40 years into the past. When I was 13, half my friends threw themselves into kickball at recess-which was too vigorous (剧烈的) for me right after lunch. So, like you, I stood around a lot. Then, one day, my teacher, Susie, asked me, “What do you want to do?” I had no answer for her. But suddenly, it came to me: marbles! I asked a few friends, and they were happy to join me. Now, I’m not suggesting you play marbles, only that you consider what you feel like doing and can make you happy. And one last idea: There’s no harm in trying games your friends are playing that you think you won’t like. You might just surprise yourself.Philip Galanes, adult |

Everyone gets angry. Many things may make you angry. Maybe your teacher gave you too much homework. Or maybe a friend borrowed your favorite video game and then broke it. You may get angry when something doesn’t go your way. Maybe you get mad at yourself when your team loses an important game. Or maybe you become a road rager(路怒族) when a driver accidentally cuts in front of you. That makes you angry!
You need to know what to do with your anger. Here are some things you can do when you feel angry:
Talk to a friend you can trust.
Count to 10.
Get or give a hug.
Take some exercise.
Draw a picture of your anger.

Think good thoughts (maybe about a fun vacation or your favorite sport).

Never getting angry is impossible. But when you’re angry, you can do something and it can make things better or worse. Don’t let anger be the boss of you. Take charge of it!

Handshakes, kisses, hugging…people all over the world greet each other in different ways. Because of the outbreak of COVID-19, people are changing how they greet each other to stop the virus from spreading(传播). They have come up with some good ways to say hello.
France
French people love to kiss on the cheek, even between people who have only just met. As kissing and handshaking may spread the virus, a French expert says simply looking into a person’s eyes is good enough as a greeting.
Australia
Holding your hand out to shake hands is popular in Australia. However, it’s risky at this time. People said they could pat(轻拍) each other on the back.
Iran
In Iran, a video has gone viral(在网上快速传播的) online. It shows three friends meeting, hands in their pockets, and two of them hitting their feet lightly against each other as a greeting. It seems to be a good way to replace their traditional greetings — handshaking and hugging.
UAE
A nose-to-nose greeting is popular in the United Arab Emirates(阿拉伯联合酋长国). People there rub (摩擦) their noses together upon meeting or leaving each other’s company. Now UAE’s Health and Prevention Ministry is advising people to stop this traditional greeting. It also said that people shouldn’t shake hands, kiss or hug. Instead, they should greet each other “by moving the hand from side to side only”.
