UNIT 3 Reading and thinking 教案Learning aims :To discuss climate changeTo learn to identify the style of this text and infer the writer’s purpose To learn to draw a diagramTo think about how we can do to deal with climate changeWarming up Climate change is a heat topic for the scientists around the world. They all try to find out the truth about these questions:What causes climate change? What are the solutions to stop climate change?View the video. What other consequences may global warming bring about? Before you read, look at the graph and the picture on Page 26 and discuss these questions in groups.1. What is the graph about? What information can you get from it?The graph shows the change in the Global Surface Temperature between 1920 and 2016. It shows the temperature anomaly, which shows how much the temperature has risen above what it would usually be at a base level.2. Have you ever seen the photo before? What might be the story behind it?I haven’t seen this photo, but I have seen photos like it. The story is that the polar bear starved to death because it could not find enough to eat.Reading Read the text carefully, and answer the questions.1.What happened to the polar bear in the photo? Why did the writer write about it? The polar bear in the photo died of starvation. The writer wrote about it because it showed one of the effects of rising temperatures due to climate change. Can you use your words to describe how climate change have influenced the polar bear’s life?2. Why is the “natural” greenhouse effect important and necessary?Because it keeps Earth’s climate warm and habitable. 3. What are the consequences of high greenhouse gas emissions? More heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth’s surface temperature to rise quickly.Read Paragraph 4. What are the consequences of global temperature rise? Finish the mind map below.4. Why did the author mention the climate scientists’ warning? To appeal to people to take appropriate actions and measures.5. What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?To draw readers’ attention to climate change and inspire them to do whatever they can to deal with this problem. In Paragraph 5, the author hopes everyone can take actions to reduce our “carbon footprint”. As individuals, what can we do in our daily life to help to minimize climate change? Use renewable energiesSave energyStop using plastic bagsLive a low-carbon lifeUse the minimum paperTake green transportationTake a shower instead of a bathTurn off the lights, computers etc. the moment you don’t need themRead Paragraph 5. What policies can the government make to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Why is a question left at the end?In this passage, what writing techniques does the author use in order to achieve his/her purpose?Read the text again and create a diagram describing how the greenhouse effect works.Choose the right item from the box to make the summary complete. Change the form when necessary. Warming oceans, melting ice and rising sea levels prove climate change is happening. Its shocking impact on Earth's 1. ______________ could be seen in a 2013 photo of a polar bear on the Norway's Arctic island of Svalbard that had 2. ______________ to death. Unable to hunt seals as before, scientists concluded low sea-ice levels due to climate change had forced it to travel long distances to find food. When explaining climate change's causes, scientists often talk about two types of “greenhouse effect” — “3. ______________” and “man-made.” As the sun warms Earth, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere such as methane and carbon dioxide trap some heat in, making Earth warm enough to live on. Extra man-made greenhouse gases from burning 4. _______________ however trap even more heat in the atmosphere, leading to extreme weather and 5. _________________. Scientists warn of more disasters to come if this man-made global warming is not stopped. Both government and individual actions are required to reduce the carbon dioxide or “6. _______________” our lifestyles produce. So what will you do to help with the most serious issue?Discussion Discuss the questions in groups.1.What examples of extreme weather and disasters do you know? Can you make a list? There are sadly many examples of extreme weather and disasters I know of, such as the extreme rainfall in France and the drought in East Africa in 2014. There were also heatwaves on nearly every continent due to climate change. 2. Do you think climate change is the result of human activity? Give your reasons.I do think climate change is the result of human activities because the majority of scientists also think so, and also because global temperatures have followed the rise in global emissions and population. 3. Who do you think should take responsibility for dealing with climate change? What can we do?I think we all need to take responsibility for dealing with it. Individuals can change their behaviour and try to reduce their carbon footprint, while companies and governments can do the same on the larger scale.HomeworkCreate a carbon footprint survey, carry out the survey and then use the results to come up with ways to reduce carbon footprints.
