    课题:Reading and interaction: An excerpt from The Old Man and the Sea 

     

    课时学习目标:

     

             通过阅读介绍和小说节选,了解故事的梗概;

             通过分析细节,还原故事场景;

             通过关键句的解读,挖掘文章主题。

    1. Pre-reading

             What is an excerpt?

    An excerpt is a short piece of writing or music which is taken from a larger piece.

     

             Have you ever heard of Earnest Hemingway and his work?

    Ernest Hemingway is one of the most famous American writers of the twentieth century. Hemingway was an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. He returned to Europe to begin his career as a writer of fiction. For the next forty years, he published numerous short stories and novels, among the most famous of which are The Sun Also Rise , A farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea.

    Though primarily known as a writer of fiction, he continued throughout his life to function as a journalist, covering wars.

    Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954 for his novel The Old man and the Sea.

     

    1. While-reading
    1. Read the introduction and answer the following questions.

             Who is the main character in the story?

    An old man called Santiago is the main character of the story.

             What happens to the main character? 

    He has finally caught a huge fish after 84 days of catching nothing on the sea and ties the fish along the side of the boat.

    1. Skim the excerpt and answer the following questions, and then divide the excerpt into three parts.

             Can the old man survive a shark attack? Will he be able to fight off the bloodthirsty Shark?

    The old man survives the shark's attack by killing it.

    1. Deep reading

    Read each part and answer some questions.

             The First Part: Lines 25-38

    Lines 29-33

    Q: How did the shark attack the big fish?

    The shark closed fast on the boat, drove forward in the meat just above the fishs tail and ripped off its skin and flesh.

    Lines 33-38

    Q: How did the man fight the shark?

    The old man threw the fishing spear into the sharks head and hit the shark in the brain with all his strength, determination and hatred. 

             The Second Part: Lines 39-44

    Q: How did the shark struggle before he died?

    The shark turned over two times and wrapped himself in the rope. At his last breath, he moved his tail, opened and closed his mouth, and swam over the water as fast as a speedboat. With three quarters of his body clear above the water, the shark lay quietly.

             The Third Part: Lines 45-59

    Lines 45-51

    Q: How did the man feel after he killed the shark?

    The old man felt very tired defeating the shark. He was also worried because his experience told him that more sharks, attracted by the blood of the big fish, would come.

    Q: What did he mean by I wish it had been a dream now and that I had never caught the fish?

    He wished it had been a dream because he expected more fighting with other sharks and his possible fate--death.

    Q: What do you think the old man meant by “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”?

    He believes that a man’s body can be destroyed, but his spirit will not be destroyed. It shows the old man has a strong will and courage in the face of difficulties.

    Brainstorm the possible difficulties the old man might meet after the fight.

    1. Listen to the audio recording of the text and read the text at least twice.

    2.
