I. Mini-project
Have a class discussion about challenges in life and how to deal with them. The following example is for your reference.
- Have you ever found yourself in a difficult situation?
When I learnt to ride a bicycle. I had a problem. I didn’t know how to maintain my balance. I thought it was easy as long as I could hold it straight. But when I practised, it seemed too difficult to control. It required all of my strength to keep it moving, but soon I fell off my bike. I failed, but it was hard to accept the failure.
- How did you deal with it?
Later on, I carefully watched my father kept his balance with his feet and hands. With more practice, I was finally able to ride a bicycle.
- How did you feel about it?
I felt quite proud of myself.

①I am going to talk about an assignment in school which challenged me. It was quite daunting, as it involved public speaking. Every time when I had to talk in front of other people, I easily got choked. I was rather worried so I turned to my uncle for help who regularly gave speeches in public. He told me that the key to a good speech was mastery over the subject matter. I spent one whole month memorizing the content and had my friends come over and help me prepare. When finally the day of the presentation arrived, I not only gave the whole presentation but also received a good grade. That is the day when I realized that instead of getting cold feet in front of challenges, we should overcome them.
②I lived abroad for two years when I was a kid. At first, communication became a huge issue. As a eight years old kid, who barely knew how to speak English, I tried to fit in, but it was literally impossible for me to understand my fellow classmates. I was frustrated and scared but I knew I just had to try agian and try harder the next time. So I borrowed many English books from the library and began to imitate others’ accents. With continuous efforts, I was able to speak fluent English finally. This precious experience has paved the path of English learning for me, and I am quite grateful for my perseverance.

(1) Don’t aim at success - the more you aim at it and make it a __target__, the more you are going to miss it. Here “target” is used as a noun.

(3) The life of a successful businessman is similar to other people’s lives. Some days are amazing. Some days are ___a struggle_____. It’s the same for all of us. Here “struggle” is used as a noun.
(4) Take it easy. Snakes will only __attack______ if they feel threatened. In this sentence, “attack” is used as a verb.
(5) Do you agree with the famous saying, “if you can’t beat them, join them?” “Beat” is used as a verb in this sentence. “If you can’t beat them, join them” is a set expression.
(6) Laughter heals all ___wounds_____. No matter what you are going through, it makes you forget about your problems. “Wounds” here is used as a noun.
(7) A man is not finished when he is defeated. He is finished when he quits. “Defeat” is used as a verb in this sentence. Even though beat and defeat have similar meanings, there are differences in terms of register: defeat is more formal, while beat is informal.
(8) My father taught us the famous saying, “you should not ____bite_____ the hand that feeds you.
Look up the words below in a dictionary. Write down their meanings in Chinese as a noun and as a verb in the table. And then use the correct form of the words to complete the sentences.
