2.3   Watch the video about the use of English in South Africa and answer the question.

Why do students in South Africa have to learn English at school though English is not the mother tongue of most people?

    Because_____________________________________________.

    (students answer for reference)

-English is the main language of business, politics and the media. If they didn’t speak English, it would be very difficult to find a job.

-English is an official language in South Africa.

-Most people there speak English as a second, third or fourth language.

Most students usually speak English together outside school.

2.5   Watch the video about the use of English in Wales and answer the question.

As one part of the UK, why do some students in Wales have to learn Welsh?

    From the video, because __________________________________________________.

    (students answer for reference)

-Every child under the age of sixteen is required to study Welsh in school.

-All the subjects, except English and French, are taught in Welsh in some schools like Glantaf School.

-Students would probably never speak the language if they didn’t study Welsh at school.

    From your perspective, ____________________________________________.

    (students answer for reference)

From my perspective, some students in Wales are required to learn Welsh because people who live there are afraid of losing their own language and they want to protect their language as well as their culture. So, perhaps the best way to preserve Welsh is to ask students even small children to learn the language.

    1. Group discussion.

Share your opinions on the statement of ‘Putonghua should be used more than local dialects.’  You should support your opinions with proper reasons.

    (students answer for reference)

I agree that ‘Putonghua should be used more than local dialects.’ Putonghua is the only official language in China. It enables people from different provinces to understand and communicate with each other more easily. If people don’t speak such a common language, it will be difficult for them to find a job in big cities. So, Putonghua should be used more than local dialects for information exchange nationwide.

I don’t think that ‘Putonghua should be used more than local dialects.’ Local dialects carry and preserve local cultures. Maintaining high standards of Putonghua may pose a threat to some local dialects and cultures. People should be encouraged to use dialects more than Putonghua in their daily life, such as in TV and radio programs. Otherwise, some local dialects may disappear.

    IV. Interaction

If you lived in Wales, would you speak English or Welsh…or both? Why?

    (students answer for reference)

If I lived in Wales, I would speak both English and Welsh. Here are my reasons.

On one hand, English as a global language is so widely used all over the world that I can’t neglect it. English will help me to communicate and make friends with people from other countries.

On the other hand, I think I have no choice but to learn Welsh, especially in some schools like Glantaf School, where students are required to learn Welsh. And a lot of local people there speak Welsh, so it is easy to communicate with them if I speak Welsh. Furthermore, I know there are many unique, small languages that risk becoming extinct in the years to come. Therefore, if I lived in Wales, I would be afraid of losing Welsh. Language is a kind of personal identity, so it is very important to remember who we are and where we come from. If we younger generation couldn’t carry on speaking Welsh, it would disappear in the future.

So, if I lived in Wales, I would choose to speak both English and Welsh for the purpose of communicating with people around the world as well as preserving the language of my own.

    IV. Assignments

    1. Finish the Vocabulary Exercise on page 57 in the textbook.
    2. Watch the video “World English” again and finish the writing task on page 39 in the workbook.
