课题：Grammar activity: The to-infinitive as the adverbial

课时学习目标：

    识别和掌握to-infinitive 作状语的语法结构以及传递的语言信息；

    能够在交际语境中适切地运用 to-infinitive。

1. Identifying

         Read the passage. Match to-infinitives 1-7 to grammar rules a and b. Then complete rule c.

1. The to-infinitive can be used to show the purpose of an action.

2. …, so he began conducting experiments to improve rice yields per hectare(10,000m2).
3. …, people have been crossing different plant varieties to create hybrids.

b. The to-infinitive can also be used to show a result.

1. He grew to be a curious and hard-working plant scientist.

4. He tried different ways of creating rice hybrids, only to discover that his attempts were unsuccessful.

5. Even though it often seemed too difficult to complete this task,…

6. Our country continued to increase its rice yields to become one of the biggest food donors in the world.

c. If the result is negative, it is common to put the adverb ___only_______ immediately before the infinitive.

2. Re-writing

         Rewrite the numbered parts using to-infinitives of purpose or result. The following example is for your reference.

In 1962, an Archaeology student named Fan Jinshi travelled the 2,400 km from Beijing to Dunhuang so that she could do an internship.

 In 1962, an archaeology student named Fan Jinshi travelled the 2,400 km from Beijing to Dunhuang to do her internship.

2.  Fan arrived at the institute only to discover that there was no electricity or running water.
3. With 46,000 square meters of wall painting, there was enough art in the caves to keep archaeologists like her busy for years to come.
4.  For over half a century, Fan studied the site, researched its history and worked tirelessly to protect it.
5. She has also cooperated with international experts to encourage further archaeological research.
6. The Mogao caves are too far away from large cities to be convenient for many tourists to visit.

3. Practicing

         Work in groups of four. Think about what your group members did today and guess why they did that. Write down three descriptions. Use the to-infinitive form to express a result or purpose in each of your descriptions. Here is a sample sentence for your reference.

Li Ming took a taxi to school this morning to avoid being late.

You may also use these expressions to help you.

1. close the window … keep warm

Lily closed the window to keep warm.

2. underline the sentences … review

Nick underlined the key sentences in the text to review them later.

3. go to the dinning room …  no food

Jack went to the dinning room only to find that there was no food left.

4. Interaction
