Under an agreement with the govenment, Volkswagen, a carmaker, has given several new electric cars to this island for its public services; and it will sell others at cost price to the local people. In return, the government has increased subsidies(补贴)for people to buy electric cars. Besides, the government also plans to build a solar-wind power plant(发电厂).
Different from other nearby islands, Astypalea is not connected to Greece's electricity grid(电网). With only 3,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels, tourism is still not very developed. Many local people make a living by raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. It was chosen for Volkswagen's experiment after Nikos Komineas, the Mayor(市长),said the island needed an electric bus to test on the roads.
Most people here are interested in the project. Mr. Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to decrease by a third over the next five years. He says that the local people will be able to travel on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which are connected to a mobile-phone app and available all day and night. And they will be free!
If everything goes well, a wind turbine(风力发 电机)will be put up on this island in 2026.However, the local people worry that the sights will be influenced by the 200-meter-high turbine and the tourists will go elsewhere. A team of scientists from Denmark say they accidentally discovered what they believe is the world's northernmost(最北端的) island in late July,2021.
At first, the scientists thought they had arrived at Oodaaq, which until then was believed as the world's northernmost island. In 1978, Oodaaq was discovered by a Danish team that made a science journey to research ocean life.
“There was something wrong with our GPS and it led us to believe that we were standing on Oodaaq Island at first,” said Morten, the leader of the team. “When we realized that we were on an undiscovered island, we posted photos of the island on social media with its position immediately, and a number of American island hunters(搜寻者)went crazy and said that it couldn't be true.”
The yet-to-be-named island is 780 meters north of Oodaaq and was found after the ice above it moved away. It is about 30 by 60 meters in size and rises to about three to four meters above sea level. The research team does not consider the discovery to be a result of climate(气候)change. Morten said the island has a lot of soil(土壤) and rocks. He said it may be the result of a big storm that, with the help of the sea, slowly pushed material from the seabed together until an island formed.
The island is not expected to exist(存在)a long time. “No one knows how long it will remain, and it could disappear as soon as a great new storm hits,” Morten said
1.What was the purpose of the Danish team's journey in 1978?
A. To do research on Oodaaq.
B. To study animals and plants in the sea.
C. To search for new islands.
D. To find the northernmost point of land.
2.From the passage we can learn that Morten .
A. gave the new island a name
B. landed on Oodaaq by accident
C. is the leader of the American island hunters
D. is one of the men who found the new island
3.How did the American island hunters feel when seeing the photos of the new island?
A. Surprised and excited.
B. Worried but interested.
C. Disappointed and sad.
D. Happy but nervous.
4.What can we infer from the passage about the new island?
A. It is 780 kilometers north of Oodaaq.
B. It appeared because of climate change.
C. It was once covered by the sea ice.
D. It will move some days later.
5.What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The discovery of Oodaaq Island.
B. The dangerous result of climate change.
C. The introduction of a newly-found island.
D. The importance of discovering new islands
答案:

2.D 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“A team of scientists...discovered what they believe is the world's northernmost island”和第三段中的 “Morten, the leader of the team”可知,Morten 是发现这个小岛的科学家团队成员之一。

Scientists have found a link between self-control and intelligence. In a 2016 study published in the journal Psychological Science, participants(参加者)had to choose between two prizes:a smaller amount of money that they could get at once or a larger amount of money that they could get later.
The results showed that people who chose to receive the larger amount of money at a later date scored higher on intelligence tests. These people had more self-control.
Being really funny
