    8.C 根据上一句中的“offered her and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station”可知, Cordova-Rojas和天鹅去了附近的地铁站,故此处指在地铁上,似乎没有人害怕这个特殊的“乘客”。
    9.D 根据上一句“Afterward, the swan regained its health.”可知,天鹅后来恢复了健康,故推断它在救助中心交的朋友是另外一只受伤的天鹅。

A woman who couldn't feel hungry after a stroke(中风) may help us improve our understanding of one area of the brain.
The 28-year-old Canadian was hospitalized after feeling weak on one side of her body and having trouble speaking. The examination result showed that she had a stroke in a brain area called the insula (脑岛).
Soon after the stroke ,the woman noticed that she never felt hungry any more, even when she hadn't eaten for a long time. She often forgot to eat and lost more than 10 kilograms.
The woman could still taste and smell the food, but often ate about half as much as usual because she no longer enjoyed eating. Even chocolate, her favorite food, gave her no pleasure. The woman's hunger finally came back about 12 months after the stroke.
The insula is one of the least understood parts of the brain. It works with other parts of the brain to make a feeling of hunger that encourages eating. “This woman's brain would still have been receiving signals (信号)that she was missing calories, but because of the damage(损伤) to her insula, she wouldn’t have been aware of them," says Yoav Livneh at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
This finding could help to find new ways to treat obesity(肥胖). For example, it may be possible to use some ways to send signals to the insula to prevent overeating, Livneh says. He agrees that this is a possibility, but says it will be more important not to damage the insula’s other functions(功能)
1.Why did the woman eat less just after the stroke?
    A. She was in a bad mood.
    B. She was trying to lose weight.
    C. She was advised to eat less.

    A. She often forgot something.
    B. She couldn't taste the food.
    C. She lost interest in chocolate.
    D. She could feel hungry again.
3.What can we know about the insula?
    A. It is easy to be damaged after a stroke.
    B. It is the most important part of the brain.
    C. It tells us when we should eat something.
    D. It makes stroke patients difficult to smell.
4.What will the new finding probably help us to do?
    A. Fight against the stroke.
    B. Make our brain stronger.
    C. Go on a healthy diet.
    D. Deal with the obesity problem.
5.What's the best title for the passage?
    A. New Treatment on Stroke

    C. Secrets to Fight Obesity
    D. Some Research on the Brain

Researchers have created the first complete map of the world's coral reefs ( 珊瑚礁). Development of the map was led by scientists at Arizona State University.
The online map is created to be a coral reef protection tool. It can also support ocean planning and coral science activities. And it is available to everyone on the Internet.
Called the Allen Coral Atlas, the map was named after Microsoft's late co-founder(联合创始人),Paul Allen, who started providing money for the project in 2017. The idea came out of an effort by researcher Ruth Gates, a coral biologist(生物学家)at the University of Hawaii,to create “super coral” to help save reefs.
When announcing the launch of the map recently, the creators said it is the first worldwide, clear map of its kind. It gives users the ability to see complete information about local reefs, including different kinds of undersea structures (结构) like sand, rocks, seagrass and coral.
The map includes areas up to 15 meters deep. It is meant to help policymakers(政策制定者)in making decisions about protected ocean areas, plans for structures and seawalls and coral recovery projects.
Greg Asner led the effort to create the map. He said that for the first time, the project had created “a map of the entire coral reef system". Asner said the researchers depended on a network of hundreds of field volunteers who provided local information about reefs. This helped the team to study the right areas more effectively. Asner said about 75 percent of the world's reefs had not been mapped in such a complete way before. He added that many had not been mapped at all.
Both Allen and researcher Ruth Gates died in 2018, leaving Asner and others to carry on their work. Asner said, “Ruth would be so pleased.. ,that this is really happening.”
1.The researchers created the map to .
    A. improve the protection of coral reefs
    B. help tourists learn about coral reefs
    C. share it with people online for free

2.The idea of creating the map came from .
    A. Paul Allen B. Bill Gates C. Ruth Gates D. Greg Asner
3.What did the volunteers do to help the researchers create the map?
    A. They raised money for the project.
    B. They collected information about local coral reefs.
    C. They provided advice for the researchers.
    D. They called on local people to save coral reefs.
4.What can we learn from Asner's words in the last paragraph?
    A. He is very pride of himself.
    B. He wants to share the joy with Ruth.
    C. Ruth paid a lot for the mapping work.
    D. Ruth didn't believe the success of the map

Before arriving in China, I had read lots of books about China. Therefore, when I arrived, I was excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. It was so greatly different
from the UK. The food, the landmarks, the big cities and everyday life-I couldn't wait to explore.
However, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind, not because I was lazy, but because I had no confidence to learn the most difficult language in the world. Besides this, once I moved to China, I lived in Shanghai. It is an international city, with many people speaking English as a second language. So I thought English would be sufficient.
But after a year in China I found many expats(侨 民) spoke Chinese. Perhaps it was achievable after all? I felt uncomfortable because so many Chinese people could speak English while I couldn't even speak the most basic Chinese. To face the challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.
In the two years since starting to learn I have made great progress. Now, I am able to talk in Chinese on many topics(话题).Learning to speak Chinese isn't as difficult as I once expected. When I speak to Chinese people in Chinese, they almost always understand me. The most challenging thing is listening since Chinese people talk at such a speed. I can't always understand what's been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this. Learning Chinese has taken a lot of hard work. But there is still a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency(流利).
Learning Chinese not only helps me in day-to-day life, but deepens(加深) my cultural understanding of such a great country. So, to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, don't be afraid, face the challenge and be confident
1.After arriving in China, the writer_________.
    A. read a lot of books about China
    B. couldn't wait to study Chinese
    C. tried to learn more about China
    D. missed his life in his home of UK
2.What does the underlined word “sufficient" probably mean in Para.2?
    A. Enough. B. Important. C. Necessary. D. Possible.
3.What can we learn about the writer from Para.3?
    A. He had many friends in China.
    B. He was uncomfortable when Chinese people speak English.
    C. He started a new journey in China.
    D. He thought he should have started to learn Chinese earlier.
4.Why does the writer think listening is the most challenging?
    A. He has a hearing problem.
    B. Chinese people speak too fast.
    C. Chinese is the most difficult language.
    D. He doesn't know much about many topics.
5.What does the writer want to tell us through his story?
    A. It is never too late to learn.
    B. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try.
    C. Great hopes make great man.
    D. A good beginning makes a good ending
    答案:
    本文作者主要介绍了自己学习汉语的经历。这段经历使作者觉得汉语并没有想象中那么难学,他鼓励更多的人勇敢学习汉语。
1.C 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“It was so greatly different from the UK. The food...I couldn't wait to explore.”可知,中国与作者的故乡英国有很多不同,作者迫不及待想要探索中国的食、地标等,即他想要对中国有更多的了解。

The recent NCP outbreak has reminded many people of the severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS) outbreak (爆发)of 2002-03. It hit 32 countries and regions(地区) around the world. China was hit the hardest, with 5,327 cases and 349 deaths on the Chinese mainland(大陆).

It's hard to keep up with technology, especially when science fiction becomes science fact. For tens of years, we have watched movies about a future with flying cars. This week, we see a real one.
AirCar, which is from a company called Klein Vision, happens to be the world's
first flying car. It can fly about 1,000 km, at a height of 8,200 ft, and has remained up to 40 hours in the air so far. It takes only two minutes and 15 seconds for it to transform from an aircraft to a car. It can carry only two people, with a combined weight limit of 200 kg.
On June 29, Air Car completed a test flight between two cities in Slovakia, spending almost 35 minutes in the air. After landing in Bratislava, the aircraft transformed into a car and was driven into the city center by Klein Vision CEO Stefan Klein and company co-founder(共同创始人)Anton Zajac. They described the experience as “normal” and “very pleasant”.
The future possibilities are very important for this flying car. Because depending on them, people will actually know if flying cars would be accessible(可获得的) to them or not. Anton said if the company could attract even a small percentage of global airline or taxi sales, it would be hugely successful.
“There are about 40,000 orders of aircraft in the US alone,” he said. Uber showed plans for an electric flying taxi last year. Volkswagen said in February that it was looking into flying vehicles in China. Meanwhile,Porsche,Daimler and Toyota have all backed start-ups(新创办企业) in what is known as the “electric vertical takeoff and landing industry”.
One thing is quite clear that the industry will be taking a very interesting turn after this breakthrough. As the customers, we can just wait for a ride in a super cool flying car.
