    Analysis of  the teaching material 

    The topic of this unit is rules.The function is to talk about rules(school rules/class rules/family rules).The language structures are imperative sentence,the usage of modal verb can must and have to.Students have learned some imperative sentences and modal verbs before.This class is about the school rules.We will learn imperatives and modal verbs can,have to and,must which play an important role in English learning through the whole middle school.As the first class of this unit,students have a sense of what the imperatives are and how to use them to describe the rules.The new English Curriculum Standard emphasis that learning English is not only the learning of language knowledge, but also the ability to promote the practical use of language through the learning of language knowledge.

    Analysis of 

    the learners

     

    My students are from countryside. Many of them started to learn English from middle school and they have difficulties in expressing themselves in English.On the other hand, they are interested in new things.They have certain ability of observation and imitation.They like to join the activities and they want to win.

    Teaching aims

    Knowledge objects:

    enable the students to master new words 

    Imperatives Don’t and the usage of can

    Ability objects:

    Students can use imperatives Don’t to describe the rules.

    Students know how to use can for permission.

    Emotion aims:

    Students can cooperate with others in group.

    Help students feel the benefits of following the rules.They can follow the rules consciously.

    Learning strategies:

    Predict listening content according to common sense.

    Key words and sentences:rule,arrive,hallway,dining,listen,fight,  outside,wear; Don't eat in class.  We can’t fight.

    Step1: Warming up

    Play a video.Ask the Ss, “what are they doing in the video? Can we listen to music in class?  Don’t listen to music in class.

    Ss answer the teacher’s questions.

    To grasp Ss’ attention and lead in new lesson.

    Step2:

    New words learning

    1.Show pictures and learn new words and phrases.

    A:What are the rules?

    B: Don’t arrive late for class. You must be on time.

    Don’t arrive late for class.

    Don’t run in the hallways.

    Don’t listen to music in class.

    Don’t fight with others.

    Students read the rules loudly and learn the new words and phrases.

    The pictures are from students and they may arouse students’ interest of study.

    Step3:

    Presentation

    Pre-listening:

    1.Focus students’ attention to the picture in 1a and  ask :What are the students doing in the picture?Is that good for the team to do that?What do you want to say to them?

    2.Help students answer. For example:Don’t eat in class.Don’t listen to music in class,etc.

    3.Check the answers.

    1.Learn and read the sentences in 1a.

     

    2.Write the number of the rules next to the student.

    3.Check the answers.

    To make preparations for the following listening.

     

     

    To help Ss get familiar with the activities of rules.

    While-listening:

    Task 1:Listen and match.(1b) 1.Point to the instructions and names in 1b. Read it to the class. Ask students to listen carefully. Pay attention to what rules these students are breaking.Explain the first listening skills.

    2.Play the recording. Students listen and write the numbers after the names.

    3.Check the answers.

    Task 2: Listen and check.(2a)

    Explain the sentences in 2a.Ask students to listen to the tape and check the activities Alan and Cindy talk about.

    Task 3: Listen and circle.(2b)

    1. Listen to the tape and notice the difference between the pronunciation of can and can't.
    2. Explain the the difference between the pronunciation of can and can't.
    3. Ask students to listen and circle “can” or “can’t”.
    4. Check the answers.

    Students listen to the tape carefully.

     

     

     

     

     

    Students listen and write the numbers after the names.

     

    Students listen to the tape and check the activities Alan and Cindy talk about.

    To train students’ listening skills:pay attention to the key words while listening.

    Show pictures and let the Ss complete the dialogue according to the picture.

    Step4: Groupwork

    Activity:Students work in groups. Some students act and others say the rules.

    To let the Ss act say what they have learned today.

    Step5:

    Summary

    1. Sentence structure.

    We can’t ________.          

    We must ________.

    2. Listening skills and some knowledge about pronunciation.

    3.Watch a video and let students think why David’s mom always says “No” to David.

    Students review what we have learned today.

    To guide students to summarize the key points in this class.

     

     

     

    To let the Ss know the importance of the rules.Teachers and parents make rules to help them.

    Step6:Homework

    1. Copy the new words and phrases we have learned today.
    2. Review the new sentence model
    3. Write about your class rules.

    Students do the homework.

    To encourage Ss use the target language in authentic context.

    Teaching Refection:

    Advantages:First,I use the pictures of our students which arouse students’ interest easily.These pictures also tells students that English is around us. Second,pay attention to cultivating students' listening skills.Guide them to find out the key words and learn the tape scripts. Third,the video helps students feel the benefits of following the rules.They can follow the rules consciously.

    Shortcomings:Firstly,the instructions are not clear enough.Secondly,the time used in step2 is too long. So students have less time to speak. Thirdly,I should show some rules of foreign countries to let them know the same and differences rules between China and other countries.
