Robert F. Kennedy once said that a country’s GDP measures “everything except that which makes life worthwhile.” With Britain voting to leave the European Union, and GDP already predicted to slow as a result, it is now a timely moment to assess what he was referring to.
The question of GDP and its usefulness has annoyed policymakers for over half a century. Many argue that it is a faulty concept. It measures things that do not matter and misses things that do. By most recent measures, the UK’s GDP has been the envy of the Western world, with record low unemployment and high growth figures. If everything was going so well, then why did over 17 million people vote for Brexit, despite the warnings about what it could do to their country’s economic prospects?
A recent annual study of countries and their ability to transformed growth into well-being throws some light on that question. Across the 163 countries measured, the UK is one of the poorest performers in ensuring that economic growth is translated into meaningful improvements for its citizens. Rather than just focusing on GDP, over 40 different sets of criteria (标准) from health, education and civil society engagement have been measured to get a more comprehensive assessment of how countries are performing.
While all of these countries face their own challenges, there are a number of consistent themes. Yes, there has been a budding (初见端倪的) economic recovery since the 2008 global crash, but in key indicators in areas such as health and education, major economies have continued to decline. Yet this isn’t the case with all countries. Some relatively poor European countries have seen huge improvements across measures including civil society, income equality and the environment.
This is a lesson that rich countries can learn: When GDP is no longer regarded as the mere measure of a country’s success, the world looks very different.
So, what Kennedy was referring to was that while GDP has been the most common method for measuring the economic activity of nations, as a measure, it is no longer enough. It does not include important factors such as environmental quality or education outcomes—all things that contribute to a person’s sense of well-being.
The sharp hit to growth predicted around the world and in the UK could lead to a decline in the everyday services we depend on for our well-being and for growth. But policymakers who refocus efforts on improving well-being rather than simply worrying about GDP figures could avoid the heralded (预示的) disaster and may even see progress.
63. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that _____.
A. the UK is reluctant to reshape its economic pattern
B. GDP as the measure of success is widely opposed in the UK
C. the UK will contribute less to the world economy
D. policymakers in the UK are paying less attention to GDP

A. It is sponsored by 163 countries. B. It excludes GDP as an indicator.
C. Its criteria are questionable. D. Its results are inspiring.
65. In the last two paragraphs, the author suggests that _____.
A. the UK is preparing for an economic boom
B. high GDP forecasts an economic decline
C. it is essential to consider factors beyond GDP

It’s a nightly dilemma(困境) in many families: a student hits a wall doing homework, and his parents are too tired, too busy or too puzzled to help.
Ordering up a tutor is becoming as easy for kids as getting a snack. Students can use a credit card to connect with a live tutor. Such non-stop, no-appointment-needed services can be especially helpful to students with tight budgets or little time or those in remote areas although the quality of on-demand scholastics support may be uneven(不均匀的), and the unstable tutors may be not the best for those who need continuous help. Besides, language barriers can also cause problems on sites which rely on tutors from abroad.
Prices are lower than what many skilled tutors charge in a student’s home. Parents and students say the quick homework fix can ease stress and make evenings at home more peaceful.
Whenever Peggy Bennett of Dallas tries to help her daughter, Chloe Friedman, with her eight-grade physics and math homework, “we’d always end up with quarreling,” Ms. Bennett says, with Chloe often objecting that the teacher did it differently.
Chloe says she doubted when her mom helped her sign up last month on Tutor. com. But after she logged in one evening for math help, a tutor responded within a minute. Chloe says she was guided to figure out the answers, using text chat and an interactive “whiteboard” that displayed their writing and calculations on a screen. After 10 minutes, Ms. Bennett adds, “that was all that she needed.”

Switch on the computer, get on the Internet, find baidu—a powerful search engine, type into the home assignment and finally it’s done. That’s what most ordinary students probably do and the number is increasing greatly every day, which definitely worries many teachers and parents. However, as far as I am concerned, there should be a fine line between searching for information needed in homework and searching for information to excuse for laziness.
First and foremost, never will a student truly improve his scope of knowledge, cultivate his problem-solving ability and then gain self-satisfaction and self-confidence in this way. Homework is intended to check whether a student has grasped certain knowledge, but with the rapid development of science and technology, a vast majority of students have turned to computers to save their time and energy on homework, which will definitely hold back the students’ self-testing and do great harm to students themselves and their teachers.
On top of that, this kind of action will prevent teachers from having a good command of students’ learning progress. For example, if a student gets straight As in almost all learning sections, then on no account will a teacher think the student will fail in the exam. But what if he does Is the teacher to blame
Therefore, it is this sort of behavior that stops students from learning themselves and keeps teachers from learning their students. If this trend is reversed, it will be a win-win strategy for both students and teachers.
