The Stockholm-based Swedish Academy, which names the Nobel Committee for Literature, announced the winner on Thursday. The 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to the US poet Louise Glück.
The 77-year-old Glück is a professor of English at Yale University. She is the 16th woman to win the Literature Prize since the Nobel awards began in 1901. Drawing comparisons with other writers, the Committee said Glück was like the 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson, in her “severity and unwillingness to accept simple tenets(原则) of faith”.
Glück was recognized for her clear poetic voice that with plain beauty makes individual existence universal, according to the Swedish Academy. The chairman of the Committee, Anders Olsson, also praised the poet’s “straightforward and uncompromising” voice, which is “full of humor and biting wit(机智风趣)”. The work that first brought Glück wide attention was a collection of poems called Firstborn, published in 1968. From there, she soon became recognized as one of the most brilliant poets in American contemporary literature.
Glück’s works are known for exploring personal loss and sorrow, especially in family life. She also draws on her own experiences, as well as subjects related to modern life and nature. Her poetry focuses on the painful reality of being human, dealing with themes such as death, childhood, and family life. She also takes inspiration from Greek mythology (神话) and its characters, such as Persephone and Eurydice.
Glück’s poetry collections include Descending Figure, Ararat and The Triumph of Achilles, which was published in 1985 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Glück was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize for poetry and was named Poet Laureate of the United States in 2003. In 2015, Barack Obama honored Glück with the National Medal of Arts and Humanities. In giving the award, Obama said her poems were able to express “the quiet drama of nature and the quiet emotions of everyday people”.
    4. Why did the Committee say Glück was like Emily Dickinson?
    A. They have the same life experiences. B. They are similar in personality.
    C. They are both excellent contemporary poets. D. They both won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
    5. Which poetry collection made Glück first widely known to the public?
    A. Ararat. B. Firstborn.
    C. Descending Figure. D. The Triumph of Achilles.
    6. What do Louise Glück’s poems feature?
    A. Expressing her love for nature. B. Drawing ideas from ancient lives.
    C. Describing mythological stories. D. Discussing failure and sadness in family.
    7. What is the text probably?
    A. A news report. B. A biography.
    C. A book introduction. D. An advertisement.
    C
Have you heard the expression “forewarned is forearmed”? It means that if you know what’s coming, you can prepare yourself for it. The best way to know if a tornado(龙卷风) is coming is to listen to the radio and television reports of tornado watch and warnings.
The best source of all is NOAA Weather Radio. A good NOAA Weather Radio has an alert(警报) feature that will go off like an alarm clock whenever a warning is issued. You can get these radios at many big stores or at online stores. Also consider getting a weather warning app for your smartphone.
If a tornado warning is issued, that means a tornado has been spotted or that the monitoring system is showing a possible tornado forming in a storm. Take the warning seriously! Don’t bother to open windows to balance the pressure. That’s a harmful act that will lead to a bunch of rain and wind in your house.
Find shelter immediately on the lowest floor of your home. Basements or cellars(地窖) are best, but if you don’t have one, go to a small room without windows. If you can, cover yourself up with blankets. Also try to take your radio with you so you can hear where the storm is and if the danger is over. In public buildings, try to find a sheltered area away from windows. A small room is best. If you’re in a movable home, get out and try to find a solidly built building or tornado shelter to hide in.
The chance of a tornado hitting you is very small, but you have to act fast if you hear a warning. You may have only a few minutes to find shelter. It’s a good idea for your family to have a tornado drill once a year so that you will know exactly what to do during such an emergency.
    8. Why is the expression “forewarned is forearmed” referred to?
    A. To show how to prepare for a tornado. B. To warn of the danger of a tornado.
    C. To stress the importance of preparing ahead. D. To tell readers how to deal with a tornado.
    9. What do we know about the NOAA Weather Radio?
    A. It has a built-in alarm clock. B. It’s connected to a smartphone app.
    C. It measures the strength of a tornado. D. It rings when a tornado is found coming.
    10. What is suggested when a tornado comes?
    A. Hiding in the basement. B. Finding a big public building.
    C. Covering windows with blankets. D. Asking for help through the radio.
    11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
    A. Summarize the previous paragraphs. B. Add new background information.
    C. Introduce another topic for discussion. D. Raise public awareness of tornadoes.
    D
A sperm whale was found dead on a beach in Scotland, with nearly 100 kilograms of plastic and other waste in his digestive system. Scientists struggle with this, says Matthew Savoca, a postdoctoral researcher at Hopkins Marine Station at Stanford University and a National Geographic Explorer. They know plastic is everywhere. Some 18 billion pounds of it flow into the oceans every year. They know animals are eating it. But finding the reason is really hard.
Conventional wisdom suggests ocean animals eat plastic because it is there and they don’t know any better. To some animals, plastic may smell like food. Toothed whales hunt deep in the ocean, sometimes more than 1,600 feet below the surface, where it’s pitch-black. They use echolocation(回声定位) to hunt for food. It’s possible that plastic rubbish sounds like food to them. But that doesn’t explain why only certain types of whales, such as sperm whales, turn up dead on beaches with stomachs full of plastic.
By contrast, baleen whales, including blue whales, have natural filters(过滤器) for their food. Their throat is narrow, which prevents them from swallowing anything much larger than the krill — very small shellfish — the basis of their diet. That could help explain why baleen whales are not ending up with plastic-filled stomachs.
Fifty years ago, there was almost no plastic in the ocean. The lifespan of a large whale can be twice that long. In the lifetime of a single whale, we went from an ocean with no plastic to hundreds of thousands of tons of it. Plastic is the most important factor affecting ocean life, ahead of climate change, overfishing, shipping and noise pollution. It’s a real shame because their lives are arduous enough even without the additional pressure we put onto them.
    12. What do scientists still have no clear idea about?
    A. How whales digest their food. B. Why ocean animals eat plastic.
    C. What causes the death of whales. D. How plastic hurts ocean animals.
    13. What does the author want to stress in the second paragraph?
    A. Whales have poor sight in deep sea.
    B. People know a little about whales’ eating plastic.
    C. Whales find food through echolocation.
    D. Plastic generally smells like food to sperm whales.
    14. What does the underlined word “arduous” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Peaceful. B. Secure. C. Thrilling. D. Tough.
    15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. Plastic: Mistaken Food for Whales B. Plastic Pollution in the Ocean
    C. Plastic: Silent Killer of Whales D. Dangers in the Ocean to Whales

How to Get a Comfortable Night’s Sleep
Are you having trouble sleeping through the night? Achieving a good night’s sleep is important for your overall health, and helps you face the next day’s tasks with a well-rested body and mind. 16
    Choose the right mattress(床垫).
Some people sleep better on firm mattresses, while others prefer soft ones. 17 Whatever material or level of firmness you choose, your mattress should be able to support your weight but feel comfortable so that you wake up feeling rested. Most mattresses last about eight years, so think about replacing yours if it is old and uncomfortable.
    Choose the right pillow.
Select a pillow that feels comfortable to you, no matter whether it is soft or firm. You can also use several pillows if
you like, but whatever position you sleep in, make sure that they do not push your head up at a sharp angle. 18
    Sleep on your side.
Sleep positions normally fall into one of three categories: back, side or stomach. Sleeping on your side is most recommended for comfort and to reduce the chances of interrupting your sleep. When sleeping on your side, you’re your knees slightly toward your chest. 19 This reduces pressure on your hips(臀部) and lower back, making sleep more comfortable.
    20
If you are trying to go to sleep soundly, avoid coffee and other caffeinated(含有咖啡因的) products, whose effects can last for hours, making it hard to go to sleep comfortably. Besides, the food you consume, and when you have it, can impact your sleep, so avoid large meals before bedtime. Moreover, keep the lights off at night, which contributes to a good sleep.
    A. Set good sleep habits.
    B. Create the right environment for sleep.
    C. You can choose whatever type feels best to you.
    D. By well preparing for sleep, you can achieve a good rest.
    E. Consider placing a pillow between your knees if you have back trouble.
    F. Your pillow should keep your head held supported between your shoulders.
    G. Look for a mattress that provides adequate support for your back and neck.
