When Rachel Ratelle saw a news video of a burned koala trying to climb a tree to safety in fireravaged(火灾肆虐的) Australia, she decided to do something about it.

She looked up wildlife rescue and relief agencies in Australia to find out what they needed most. Besides donations, many organizations asked for handsewn(手缝的) and knitted pouches(袋子) and wraps for koalas and other animals that were burned or had lost their homes and parents in the fires.

This idea attracted Ratelle, but there was just one problem.

Id never sewn in my life said Ratelle, 17, a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista, US. “Giving money seemed like something too simple. But I wanted to directly help these animals by doing something myself, so I decided to learn how to sew.

Over the next few months, Ratelle bought her own sewing machine and taught herself how to sew via videos online. Then she purchased 18 yards of fabric and sewed 25 pouches of different sizes and shipped them off to For Australian Wildlife Needing Aid (FAWNA), one of several relief organizations that have rushed to rescue koalas, kangaroos and other species suffering from burns.

A week later, she received a photo from FAWNA with a young joey(幼兽) in one of her larger pouches. It made me feel like I contributed to the world and it showed how a simple act of kindness can go a long way said Ratelle, who hopes to study biology for a future career as a nurse practitioner.

I plan to use my new sewing skills to help animals and people devastated(蹂躏) by natural disasters she said.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, it estimated that 12 billion animals have died, as a result of the bushfires, which have burned more than 26 million acres in Australia.

Several craft guild(手工业行会) websites around the world have mobilized(动员) for Australian relief by making the animal pouches. Karen Newberry and her two daughters Madison, 12 and Rochelle, 8, from San Diego also offered their help in such a way. For Newberry, it was a big push that made we crafters, sewers to realize theres something more we can do than just make things for ourselves she said.

4What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about?

AWhat inspired Ratelle to learn to sew.

BWhat is needed to save koalas and other species.

CThe poor living conditions of wild animals in Australia.

DDifferent ways to help koalas and other animals in Australia.

5How did Ratelle feel when she received a photo from FAWNA according to the text?

    AProud. BCalm.

    CSurprised. DDisappointed.

6The statistics(统计数字) in Paragraph 8 are used to show ________.

Ahow frequent the bushfires are in Australia

Bhow harmful the bushfires are in Australia

Cthe great varieties of wild animals in Australia

Dthe difficulties facing relief organizations in Australia

7What do Newberrys words in the last paragraph suggest?

APeople should stay united through difficult times.

BLife is not easy for crafters and sewers in Australia.

CIt is challenging for crafters and sewers to do relief work.

DCrafters and sewers can do more to help animals.

When Rachel Ratelle saw a news video of a burned koala trying to climb a tree to safety in fireravaged (火灾肆虐的)Australia, she decided to do something about it. Besides donations, many organizations asked for handsewn (手缝的)and knitted pouches (袋子)and wraps for koalas and other animals…” 故选A项。

As the coronavirus(冠状病毒) outbreak continues, many Americans are fearful of using public transportation. They are also looking for ways to get exercise without going to a gym. So, it may not be surprising that the pandemic(疫情) has led to a major increase in bicycle sales.

In the US, bicycles at big stores have sold out. And small bicycle stores cannot keep up with demand for familystyle bicycles: the lowcost, easytoride models. The bicycle industry is seeing its biggest sales increase since the oil crisis of the 1970s said Jay Townley, an industry expert. He compared the sale of bicycles to the rush to buy products like toilet paper at the start of the pandemic.

The rise in bicycle sales is not happening just in the US. Italy has created bicycle paths for the growing number of people who want to avoid public transportation. In London, city officials plan to ban cars from some central roads. Bike shop owners in Manila say demand is even stronger than what they see at Christmas time.

Of course, you can only buy a bicycle if you can find one. In the US, the shortages now mean it may take many months to get a bicycle. High demand is not the only reason for the shortage. Many bicycle factories were shut down to stop the spread of COVID19The increase in bicycle demand began in March as countries began to close down. In April, the sale of bicycles increased 200 percent in the US.

Joe Minutolo is the coowner of Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop in Maine. He said he hoped the increased sales meant a change in the way people think about transportation. People are having a chance to rethink things he said, “Maybe well all learn something out of this, and something really good will happen.

8What causes the increase in bicycle sales?

AShortage of public transportation. BOutbreak of the coronavirus.

CPeoples desire to defeat disease. DPeoples fear of natural disasters.

9What change has the pandemic caused in Italy?

AMore bikes are sold than at Christmas time.

BFamilystyle bicycles are in great need.

CCars are banned from some central roads.

DNew bicycle paths have been built.

10What can we know from Paragraph 4?

AIts impossible to buy a bike.

BBike factories were closed in April.

CHigh demand for bikes began in March.

DIt takes many months to produce a bike.

11What is Joe Minutolos attitude towards the increased sales of bicycles?

    ADoubtful. BPositive.

    CUncertain. DCritical.

Scientists, psychologists and English academics at Liverpool University have found that reading the works of the classical writers like Shakespeare and Wordsworth has a great effect on the mind, catches the readers attention and triggers moments of selfexamination.

Using a special machine, they monitored the brain activity of 30 volunteers as they read works by William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, T. S. Eliot and others.

In the first part of the research, the brain activity of 30 volunteers was monitored as they read passages from Shakespeares plays, including King Lear, Othello, Coriolanus and Macbeth, and again as they read the text rewritten in a simpler form or modern language.

While reading the common texts, normal levels of electrical activity were shown in their brains. When they read the works of Shakespeare, however, the levels of activity jumped because of his use of words which were unfamiliar to them. The result of the test showed that the more challenging passages cause a greater degree of electrical activity in the brain than the common ones.

Scientists went on to study the brain activity as it responded to each word and recorded how it lit up as the readers came across unusual words, surprising phrases or difficult sentences in the classical works. As a result, this lightening up process of the mind lasted longer than that when volunteers read common texts, encouraging further reading.

The research also found that reading poetry especially increases activity in the right hemisphere(半球)of the brain, an area connected with “autobiographical memory”driving the readers to think carefully about their own experiences based on what they have read. The academics said this meant the classical works of literature are more useful than selfhelp books.

Philip Davis, an English professor who has worked on the study in the universitys magnetic resonance center, announced this week: Classical literature acts like a rocketbooster(火箭加速器) to the brain, which provides extra power for the brain. You may never imagine how powerful it is. The research shows such kind of literature can create new thoughts and connections in the young and the old.

    Csets off Dchanges into

13Which of the following is NOT true about reading classical literature?

DIts an activity that is suitable for people of all ages.

14From the research, we can learn that ________.

Athe readers prefer Shakespeares works to the other writers works

Bthe words of classical works make it hard for volunteers to read further

Creading classical works produces a good and longlasting effect on the mind

Dpoetry increases leftbrain activity more than other literary forms

故填to improve

故填than

指物用that/which。故填that或者which

As the winter vacation is approaching, there is a heated discussion among students about whether they should do a parttime job. Students opinions are divided on this matter.

Some students are for the idea because they can make some money to buy what they like. Whats more, they can have a better understanding of the society by doing parttime jobs. However, some students are against the idea. They hold the idea that they are so tired that they want to relax themselves both physically and mentally.

Every coin has two sides. As for me, Im against the idea because Ive been looking forward to a relaxing trip and get better prepared for the next semester.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didnt wear boots; or rather, he didnt own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.

Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mothers Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I dont have any money for a gift.

Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasnt easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.

Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光) of the setting suns rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime(一角硬币).

Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newlyfound treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.

He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mothers Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his tencent offering. Then he put his hand on Bobbys shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and Ill see what I can do for you.

The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.

    One possible version

Eventually the shop owner came out and moved to the counter. There, before Bobbys eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobbys heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. “That will be ten cents, young man. the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true? He wondered.

With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands, Bobby backed off and then turned and ran___________________

    One possible version

With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands, Bobby backed off and then turned and ran. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. Look, Mother, what have I got for you Bobby called out in the backyard. Mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her. Merry Christmas Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Tearfully, Mother hugged her son in her arms. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didnt feel cold at all.
