A
▲ Martín Ramírez from Argentina:
I think it is okay for scientists to grow geneticallyengineer food because they can develop better food and this can help with the hunger problem all around the world. Scientists can help us to have more and better meats to eat by cloning only the superior animals. I don't think that we should worry so much about geneticallyengineered food.
▲ Angela Fernandez from Mexico:
I don't know if the tomatoes we find in supermarkets are genetically manipulated or not. What I do know is that they are very bad! A tomato grown with sun and soil is much better. In the case of strawberries, actually, most strawberries we can find are very tasty. I guess, however, they have been genetically manipulated, too.
▲ Vera Sirotkina from Russia:
If we manipulate vegetable genes, we can also do with human genes. So it may be possible that a substance which is left in food could get into a human body while the person is eating. Then, is it possible that this substance could modify the person's genetic structure?
▲ Pinar Müfftler from Turkey:
I don't agree with the idea that scientists should not grow geneticallyengineered food because it is not safe. If they want to make progress, they should do experiments. It's important to keep trying. If they don't keep trying, they will never be able to develop new technologies. Maybe these technologies won't be successful in the beginning, but if scientists keep trying, they will develop new ways.
1.Of the people above, who is obviously against geneticallyengineered food?
A.Pinar Müfftler from Turkey.
B.Martín Ramírez from Argentina.
C.Vera Sirotkina from Russia.
D.Angela Fernandez from Mexico.

A.developing such food is a better way to solve world hunger
B.experimenting on such food shouldn't be allowed

There was a time in my life when beauty meant something special to me. I guess that would have been when I was about six or seven years old, just several weeks or maybe a month before the orphanage (孤儿院) turned me into an old man.
I would get up every morning at the orphanage, make my bed just like the little soldier that I had become and then I would get into one of the two straight lines and march to breakfast with the other twenty or thirty boys who also lived in my dormitory.
After breakfast one Saturday morning I returned to the dormitory and saw the house parent chasing the beautiful monarch butterflies who lived by the hundreds in the bushes scattered (分散的) around the orphanage.
I carefully watched as he caught these beautiful creatures, one after another, and then took them from the net and then stuck straight pins through their heads and wings, pinning them onto a heavy cardboard sheet.
How cruel it was to kill something of such beauty. I had walked many times out into the bushes, all by myself, just so the butterflies could land on my head, face and hands so I could look at them up close.
When the telephone rang the house parent laid the large cardboard paper down on the back cement (水泥) step and went inside to answer the phone. I walked up to the cardboard and looked at the one butterfly that he had just pinned to the large paper. It was still moving about so I reached down and touched it on the wing causing one of the pins to fall out. It started flying around and around trying to get away but it was still pinned by the one wing with the other straight pin. Finally its wing broke off and the butterfly fell to the ground and just trembled (发抖) .
I picked up the torn wing and the butterfly and I spat on its wing and tried to get it to stick back on so it could fly away and be free before the house parent came back. But it would not stay on it.

D.The author thought it cruel to catch the butterfly.

Have you ever thought about leaving your apartment and digging yourself a nice, comfortable hobbit hole in a hill? Cosmo and Elfie's family lives in such a house in a village in Wales.
“Our round house is really one big room,” Elfie says. “It's easy to talk to each other! If Mom is cooking and I'm playing with my toys, we're still in the same place.”
Cosmo and Elfie's parents built their unusual home using stone, mud (泥), and wood from the forest near their house and recycled materials. They use solar energy for electricity, and their running water is from a nearby river. Everything was designed to work in harmony with (与……
Cosmo says he prefers their village to an ordinary, neighborhood because it gives him the freedom to run around the fields and ride his bike without worrying about traffic.
In fact, encouraging other people to live like them is one of the goals of Cosmo's family. They believe that by growing their own food, recycling, and using local sources for energy and supplies, they are protecting the earth from further damage caused by modern living.
Cosmo and Elfie's parents will soon begin to build their third selfbuilt woodland home.
“Mom and Dad are building a threebedroom hobbit house next,” Elfie says. She says she looks forward to living in it when she grows up.
Like his sister, Cosmo also says he plans to continue living like a hobbit when he is older.

I shut my door, a little harder than usual.
He doesn't move, but Mom looks at me angrily. I understand the look. That's the don'tshutthedoorhard look.

Mom starts the engine.
The fly doesn't move.
Mom starts driving.
The fly holds on.
Is this fly dead?
No. I see him pull both wings closer to his body.
My school is far away. We're talking miles, a few at least. Will flyguy make it?
He changes the position of his tiny fly feet to get a better hold on the windshield.

Go, flyguy, go!
Mom stops the car in front of the school.
My hero, the flyguy, made it! It's like he rode a whale through the ocean in some sort of Olympic competition. Flyguy is the goldmedal winner!
I carefully get out of the car. Putting my head back in through the open window, and whisper to Mom, “Let me know if he makes it all the way home.”

根据第一段中的“Just another fly. A pest.”及第三段中的“He doesn't move…”
根据文中的“The wind blows him to the right. Flyguy holds on. The wind blows him to the left. Flyguy holds on!”
通读全文,尤其是文中的“If one tiny fly can ride a car for this long, well, I can pass my math test.”
How old is “old”?__16__ Two hundred years ago,you were old at 35.That was the average life then. At the turn of this century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span increased to 45.In 1950,70yearolds were really old. Today, a healthy 70yearold is looking forward to many more active years.
So,how old is old? The answer is one you've heard many times, from all sorts of people. “You are as old (or young) as you feel!” The calendar simply tells you how many years you have lived. __17__
Once an unknown author wrote, “__18__ Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by giving up their goals.”
__19__ Alice Brophy, when she was with the New York City commission for the aging, said, “It upsets me when people say, ‘Gee, you look young for your age!' What does that mean? Is there some model that you're supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.”
There are many wrong ideas about aging.__20__ Here are some of the more common ones. For example, most older people are in poor health, or older people are unable to change.
A.It's extremely terrible to be grown old.
B.Youth is not a time of life but it is a state of mind.
C.These ideas stereotype(固化) people on the basis of age.
D.Old is a point of view.
E.Older people are stubborn, unable to change.
F.The answer has changed over the years.
G.Your body tells you how well you've lived.

18.B 根据后句“Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by giving up their goals.”
19.D 根据后文“Is there some model that you're supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80.”
20.C 根据前句“There are many wrong ideas about aging.”

One possible version:
Dear Jack,
Thank you for your letter and telling me your new plan of the year 2021. Our new school has been set up and we moved into it. In order to build a “green school”, I would like to call on my classmates to make it.
First, to add beauty to our school, we are going to plant more trees on campus. Recycling is always the best method to protect the environment, so, second, we will recycle bottles, plastic bags and waste newspapers. Furthermore, we will make an effort to save energy at school, for example, we will turn off electrical appliances the moment they are not being used.
I believe united efforts can make our school a real “green school”. Do you think so?
Yours,
Li Hua
