    In the 1950s,a family wh wned a farm near Beulah,Michigan kept a bull chained t an elm(榆树).The bull paced arund the tree,dragging the heavy irn chain,which led t a grve(槽)in the bark.The grve deepened ver the years,thugh fr whatever reasn,it did nt kill the tree.
    After sme years,the family tk their bull away.They cut the chain,leaving the lp(圈)arund the tree and ne link hanging dwn.
    Then ne year,agricultural disaster struck Michigan in the frm f Dutch Elm Disease.All f the elms lining the rad leading t the farm became infected and died.Everyne thught that the ld elm wuld be next.
    The farm's wners cnsidered ding the safe thing:pulling it ut and cutting it up int firewd befre it died.But they simply culd nt bring themselves t d it.It was as if the ld tree had becme a family friend.S they decided t let nature take its curse.
    Amazingly,the tree did nt die.Nbdy culd understand why it was the nly elm that was still standing in the cuntry!
    Plant pathlgists(病理学家)frm Michigan State University came ut t bserve the tree.They bserved the scar left by the irn chain,nw almst cmpletely cvered by bark.The plant experts decided that it was the chain that saved the elm's life.They reasned that the tree must have absrbed s much irn frm the chain that it became immune t the fungus(真菌).
    It's said that what desn't kill yu will make yu strnger.Or,as Ernest Hemingway put it,“Life breaks us all,but afterwards,many f us are strngest at the brken places.”
