Teaching and learning goals

Learn the new words of Unit10 in one class. Students learn to spell words in this unit. Students try to learn how to read and remember the words and phrases. They can learn to make a story with the new words and try to memorize this story.

Teaching and learning steps

Step 1 Lead in

1. Show the pictures to the students, and tell them a story about Liangliang.

  Liangliang

2. Students talk about them

Step 2 Learn to read the new words on page125

1. Ask the students to try to read the new words in this unit according to the phonetics given by 

  themselves and underline the difficulties they meet. The difficult words: junior, especially, memory)

2. Encourage the students to read the difficult words with partners.
3. Ask individual students to read the new words to the class, the others listen carefully. If

   necessary, the teacher should correct the mistakes.

4. Follow the tape and imitate the pronunciation.

Step 3 Learn to remember these words and language chunks

1. Look at the pictures, introduce Liangliang to the students.

This is Liangliang. He is a clever boy. When he was two years old, he could count from one to a hundred. He liked toys. He had many soft toys. He liked his bear toy best. But , to be honest

(truthful), he hasn’t play it for a while now. He owned a train and railway set. He also liked bored games. He liked playing chess with his father. He also liked drawing. He drew on the wall with crayons every day. Now he is already in junior high school. He plays his toys no longer . He wants to have a yard sale to sell them, though these toys bring him some sweet memories. So he checked out a lot of toys from his bedroom, he wants to sell them in 5 cents for each toy. He also wants to part with some certain toys to poor kids. As for his mother, she wants to sell her bread maker and a scarf, too. Because she wants to buy new ones.

2. Show some pictures and tell them a story about Zhang Wei

In the past, most people lived in their hometown in China. Nowadays, millions of Chinese leave the countryside to search for jobs. Zhang Wei is among them. He hasn’t been back in close to three years. It’s a sham but he just don’t have the time.

   He regards (consider) with great interest how their hometown has changed. In the mid-20th century, his school in his hometown was very old. There was a big old tree opposite the school.  Most children liked to play under the big tree, especially during the summer holiday. For him, that old school and his hometown hold all his happy childhood. But now there will be a new school.

But according to him, his hometown feelings will never change. His hometown has left many soft and sweet memories in his heart.

Step 4 Consolidation of words

1. Give students a few minutes to memorize the words first.

2. Get students to read the words by Chinese, then look at Chinese and say English.

3. Get students to spell and write down the words with Chinese. Underline the words they haven’t 

    grasped.

4. Check.

5. Spell the words . Let’s see which group can remember the most words.
