China has recently published its first artificial intelligence (人工智能)(AI) textbook for high school students, following a plan by central government last year to include AI courses in primary and junior high schools.
The textbook, named Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, was written by some famous experts from well-known schools across the country.
“The textbook pays attention to not only basics(基本原理) of AI, also practical use of AI in daily life,” said Chen Yukun, a professor at East China Normal University, who is one of the writers of the book.
At present, about 40 high schools across the country have decided to use the textbook.
“The AI is being used more and more widely in daily life nowadays. But there aren’t enough talents for high school students. Only university students study the technology. The book is a breakthrough as it takes AI technology out of the ivory tower and makes it part of high school learning,” said Lin Dahua, a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
As early as 2016, the governments had estimated(估计) that more than 5 million AI professionals may be needed in the coming years.
“Many industries in the future will benefit(受益) from AI technology, so the aim of the related courses should be to let students learn the basic ideas and methods of AI,” Lin said.

Getting a parttime job is one of the best things that happens in high school. It provides pocket money. I think it also teaches responsibility and time and money management. According to the government, teens ages 1517 years old can work 17 hours a week during school months. But studies have shown that working more than 10 hours a week has more negative than positive effects.
A teen's life affected by excessive(过度的) work is sleep. The teen needs a lot of sleep each night, however, according to the National Sleep Foundation, most teens only get about 6.8 hours. Teens who work too much have to find time to finish their homework. A shortage of sleep can lead to harmful situations.
Grades are also affected by too much work.A study on the effect of parttime work on students' study achievement reported that students who worked more than 15 hours per week showed their grades would decline and they even didn't perform as well on formal tests.
“Teens have to realize their main job is getting a good education,” says Bryna Shore Fraser. So limit your job to 10 hours a week. School is the job that will give you opportunities.
