Des yur life ever feel as if yu're pushing a heavy car—ne n which yu've spent much mney and that has nw brken dwn? Yu've dne everything right: yu haven't invested heavily in a new business r quit yur jb t pursue yur childhd dream f becming a prfessinal athlete. Yu have been a sensible adult living yur sensible life. S why des it feel like such hard wrk?
This has been me fr the past few mnths. Earlier this year, I tk a lng hard lk at my surces f incme and decided t fcus n the nes that prvided the mst mney. I'm lucky enugh t have had a gd financial year. But despite ding the right thing, it has used up my energy and I've wrked ut why.
Years ag, I realized that I disliked hard wrk. Dn't get me wrng. I dn't mind wrking hard, but hard wrk isn't fr me. What's the difference? Fr a start, hard wrk feels as if it never really gets ging. Yu can push hard wrk and it might mve a little but there's n celebratry mment when it gets dne. Mst imprtantly, hard wrk lacks jy. Wrking hard n a prject yu feel excited and mved by can be tiring and difficult, but it's ultimately jyful and that is what I've been missing.
S I asked myself what wuld feel scary but jyful and this is the answer. I'm ging t write a rmance. Of curse, being a middleaged jurnalist wh suddenly decides t write a bk is nthing nvel. Hwever, fr me, it hits the sweet spt between being jyful enugh t make me want t d it and scary enugh t make me feel it's wrthwhile.
As with all gd middleaged changes, this ne hasn't really been thught thrugh. I knw little abut writing fictin and even less abut what makes a gd bk. I have the thinnest ideas fr a plt but, fr the first time in a while, I'm excited, I will be anther Jane Austen with my fantasies which give me life. S nw, I have t g and sharpen my pencil.

A few days befre New Year 1944, Patricia Krueger received a telegram frm the U.S. Army. She hped it wuld cntain a belated birthday greeting frm her husband, an army flight engineer, Charles Krueger, whm she had nt heard frm fr 2 weeks. Instead, the message said he wasn't cming hme: His B29 had been lst and he was later declared MIA (missing in actin). Their sn, Jhn Krueger frm Middletn, Wiscnsin, is still in tears when he recunts this stry.
Decades later, the military cntinues t wrk t bring back the remains f sldiers like Charles Krueger. The jb f finding them falls t DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accunting Agency), created in 2015 after critics charged that the previus MIA search prcess was slw, and behind n innvatins in science and technlgy. Between 1973 and 2014, the remains f nly 1,849 missing service members were returned t their families; in 2021, the agency accunted fr the remains f 141 MIAs, accrding t DPAA figures.
T accelerate the wrk, Cngress gave DPAA the authrity t develp publicprivate partnerships with scientists and grups utside the gvernment. “Teaming up with academic scientists intrduces new ways f thinking,” says military histrian Michael Dlski. “Wrking with partners allws us t tap int their technlgies and capabilities in ways that we just can't maintain.”
Fr scientists, the wrk is mre than technically satisfying. “It's the mst rewarding aspect f my career,” says Mires, a scientist wrking with the agency. “In ther archaelgy sites I've wrked n, the histry is remte,” he says. “Here, yu're ding smething nt fr a thing, but fr a persn, and all the peple they tuched.”
    【语篇解读】 本文主要介绍了人们利用新技术寻找战斗中失踪人员的情况。
5.What was the telegram abut in Paragraph 1?

    B.Charles Krueger's disappearance.
    C.A birthday greeting.
    D.Jhn Krueger's memry.

A.Because DPAA wants t cntinue the search.
B.Because it tk lng and lacked creativeness.
C.Because the wrk was stpped by the military.
D.Because 141 MIAs' remains were fund in 2021.

    A.A lng search fr MIAs
    B.Achievements f DPAA
    C.Assistance frm science
    D.Cnsequences f wars

[2024·安徽六校入学测试]At the table sat my furyearld sn Matthew, legs swinging in the air and chin in hand. I stared aimlessly ut f the windw, trying t ignre the ache in my belly. “Mama, can yu play with me?”“Nt tday, hney,” I shk my head. Still recvering frm an peratin, I culd barely get ut f bed these days. I hped fr strength and happiness. But the future seemed s hpeless.
All f a sudden, Matthew jumped up frm his spt n the kitchen flr. “Bird!” he shuted, rushing t ur curtyard. Sure enugh, there was a white dve seated in a rubber tree. It sat there fr a few mments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen ne in ur neighbrhd befre.
When I dragged myself t the kitchen the next mrning, the dve was back, this time with a mate carrying twigs. “Lk, Matthew,” I said, pinting t the tree. “They're ging t make a nest.” The dves flew in and ut f the curtyard all week, building n tp f the rubber tree.
Matthew culd hardly cntain his excitement. Every mrning, he'd run int the kitchen and take his spt by the sliding glass dr, talking t the birds while they wrked. His enthusiasm was influential. As much as I was grieving, I culdn't help but lk frward t the dves' visits as well.
Then it all went wrng. The curtyard was a spt safe enugh fr a nest, but the rubber tree's brad, thin leaves were far frm stable. One night, a strng wind blew, thrwing the dves' nest t the grund. I heard the twigs break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nthing gd ever lasts. I wuldn't blame the dves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid n attentin t the pile f sticks that had nce been their nest. They started again frm scratch. Again, thugh, the wind destryed all their hard wrk. The next day, and the next, they renewed their effrts, as if nthing had happened.

    One pssible versin:
I knew I had t d smething. The white dve and its mate had given me smething t lk frward t, even in my darkest days. Nw it was time that I came t their assistance in return. I wke up the fllwing mrning with a plan. There was nly an hur befre the dves usually made their visits. I hammered a shelf int the wall next t the rubber tree and cvered it with leaves t make it lk like a tree. Then Matthew and I std by the sliding glass dr, waiting and hping.
“It wrks! The birds are back!” Matthew annunced. There they were sitting n the tp f the shelf, adding sme twigs t the new nest despite damage frm the strng wind. Three weeks later, we watched three chicks break free frm their shells. “Chirp, chirp!” Matthew sang. I held him clse and kissed him, feeling mre psitive and hpeful than I had been in mnths. It was then that I realized all arund me, life went n. And it was filled with wnders and surprises that I culdn't even imagine.
