This was a huge task, s Murray had t find vlunteers frm Britain, the United States, and the British clnies t search every newspaper, magazine, and bk ever written in English. Hundreds f vlunteers respnded, including William Chester Minr. Dr. Minr was an American surgen wh had served in the Civil War and was nw living in England. He gave his address as “Bradmr, Crwthrne, Berkshire,” 50 miles frm Oxfrd.
Minr jined the army f vlunteers sending wrds and qutatins t Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became ne f the staff’s mst valued cntributrs.
But he was als a mystery. In spite f many invitatins, he wuld always decline t visit Oxfrd. S in 1897, Murray finally decided t travel t Crwthrne himself. When he arrived, he fund Minr lcked in a bk-lined cell at the Bradmr Asylum fr the Criminally Insane.
