On mst Sundays, the sund f hammers(锤子)and ther tls hitting stne can be heard in a village in the Chimalhuacan area, n Mexic City’s east side. The sunds cme frm stne carvers(石雕师)wh still wrk n a skill that has been passed dwn fr generatins(世代)—even after the lcal stne was used up. The village is filled with meter-high religius(宗教的)figures and ther beautiful stne bjects.
Generatins f stne carvers in Chimalhuacan als created much f the stnewrk fund n buildings and in parks in the capital’s dwntwn.
While carvers in ther areas lng ag turned t machines, the wrkers here nly use hammers and ther special hand tls. Many are self-taught, but sme, like Tmás Ugarte, aged 86, learned in the traditinal way. This methd f rck cutting has been passed dwn between family members, dating back abut five generatins.
The rck cutters are generally ld. There were abut 600 fficial stne carvers abut 10 years ag. Nw, there are prbably nly arund 300. The carvers are dying and their children generally d nt want t take up the trade.
Still, the stne carvers keep the ld traditins alive. Many peple in the area use stne tls made by the stne carvers.
Rev. Albert Sandval, wh has knwn the stne wrkers since 1990, described them as “the backbne f the cmmunity.” Mst f the carvers have wrk areas at hme, which prvides them with sme mney. They sell carvings fr prices frm $500 t $2,000. But they ften d nt sell much.
Unlike many craftspeple wh want t see their wrks shwn in museums, the carvers here als wrk fr free at repairing the stnewrk at the 250-year-ld lcal church, Santa Maria de Guadalupe.

Antarctica’s smallest summer ice cver fell further t a new lw in February. This year’s sea ice minimum (最小值) is 20 percent lwer than the average (平均值) ver the last 40 years. The sea ice lss equals an area nearly 10 times that f New Zealand.
