Scientists at Nanyang Technlgical University (NTU) in Singapre have fund a new way t handle fd waste. They are turning unused durian (榴莲) fruit cverings int anti-bacterial bandages.
The researchers tk fibers frm the fruit’s cverings after they were cut and dried. Then they mixed the fibers with a liquid called glycerl(甘油). This mixture becmes a sft substance called hydrgel (水凝胶), which is then made int bandages. The fruit’s cverings make up mre than half f a durian’s structure. They are usually thrwn away and burned, which adds t envirnmental waste.
William Chen is directr f the fd science and technlgy prgram at NTU. He said, “In Singapre, we cnsume abut 12 millin durians a year, s besides the flesh, we can’t d much abut the cverings and the seeds and this causes envirnmental pllutin. S we decided t d smething t slve the prblem.” Chen added that the technlgy can als turn ther fd waste, such as sybeans and grains int hydrgel.
The hydrgel bandages can keep wund areas cler and mre mist (湿润的) than nrmal bandages which can help speed up recvering. The researchers say using waste materials fr the antibacterial bandages is less cstly than using nrmal bandages, fr the traditinal bandages use metallic cmpunds like silver r cpper, which are mre cstly than natural waste.
Fruit seller Tan EngChuan said he ges thrugh as much as 1,800 kilgrams f durian each day during durian seasn. He said being able t use the parts f the fruit that are usually thrwn away wuld make enjying durian, in his wrds, “mre cheerful.”

What makes peple s special? Tl use, self-cnsciusness, language, and culture are high n the list, but in fact all f these characteristics can be fund elsewhere in the animal kingdm. Humans and apes are clse relatives, s it is perhaps nt surprising that chimpanzees use tls r that grillas (大猩猩) have a sense f fair play, even rejecting carrts (which they nrmally accept) when they see their neighbrs getting grapes. But the qualities that we ften think f as uniquely human exist nt just n land, but in the cean as well.
Amng the invertebrates, ctpuses (八爪鱼) are knwn fr their intelligence, even exhibiting evidence f playfulness, tl use, and persnality. But these skilled predatrs live alne and cnsequently lack culture. Dlphins, n the ther hand, are large-brained, lng-living, scial- grup-based predatrs, and it is here that we find the greatest similarity t human-like culture and awareness.
Culture depends n the ability f animals t pass n things they have learned t thers. Many animals have culture in this sense, but what sets dlphins apart is what they pass n. Sme bttlense dlphins hld spnges in their muths that they use as tls t sweep fr fish hiding n the cean flr. This ability is handed dwn thrugh generatins (especially in females), with sme families- grandmther, mther, and daughter - all feeding in this highly specialized way.
Anther characteristic that dlphins share with humans is their ability t recgnize themselves in a mirrr. When facing a mirrr, mst animals behave as thugh they are interacting with anther individual. Even in humans, the ability t recgnize that the image in a mirrr is neself des nt ccur befre the age f 18 mnths. Dlphins nt nly recgnize themselves, but if a black mark is put n the bdy f a dlphin, it will spend extra time at the mirrr t lk at the mark.
32.The example f grillas rejecting carrts shws they ________.
A.are nt easy t fl
B.prefer fruit t vegetables
C.have a special taste fr fd
D.have an awareness f equality
33.What d ctpuses lack cmpared with dlphins?
A.Cperatin.B.Intelligence.
C.Tl using ability.D.Fun-lving spirits.
34.What makes dlphin culture special?
A.They tend t hunt in grups.
B.Their hunting skills are passed dwn.
C.Their learning envirnment is favurable.
D.Their families are typically female-cntrlled.
35.What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A.Dlphins enjy lking at their wn reflectin in the mirrr.
B.Dlphins are as intelligent as a typical 18-mnth-ld human baby.
C.Dlphins are generally regarded as the mst advanced nn-human species.
D.Dlphins’ ability t recgnize their wn reflectin is a higher-rder mental skill.

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is culture? It is difficult t define. 36 Fr sme peple it means literature, music and art. Others define it as beliefs, ways f behaving and the ideas f a particular grup. Anther brader definitin says that it is all the knwledge and values f a sciety. Lrd Raglan, a British sldier and authr in the 20th century nce famusly said, “Culture is rughly everything we d and mnkeys dn’t.”
As yu can see, there are different definitins f culture as there are different scieties. One useful starting pint is the idea f tw types f culture. They are culture with a capital C and culture with a small c. Culture with a capital C refers t music, literature and art. It als includes facts and statistics abut a natinal grup r sciety. 37 A persn is cultured if they knw a lt abut culture with a capital C. Many English-speaking cuntries nw have citizenship tests fr new immigrants. 38 Examples might include “ Wh wrte Hamlet?” r “Where des the Prime Minister f Canada Live?”
Culture with a small c refers t beliefs, values, traditins and the everyday life f a particular cmmunity. 39 In ther wrds, they have lts f different cultures. Culture with a small c can be different frm ne part f a cuntry t anther. Travelers and peple wh d business with peple frm different places are ften mre interested in culture with a small c. Example questins culd include “What time d Americans finish wrk? ” r “D Germans shake hands r kiss when they meet each ther?”
40 Culture gives a persn a special identity. Culture gives a cmmunity r a cuntry a unique character. Whatever the definitin, culture plays an imprtant part in everybdy’s life.
A.Hw many definitins f culture exist?
B.The USA and Britain are culturally diverse.
C.Everybdy’s definitin f culture is identical.
D.These cntain many questins abut the cuntry’s culture.
E.Everyne knws what it is but explains it in different ways.
F.Peple think this kind f infrmatin is valuable and imprtant.
G.One thing we can all agree n is that culture is abut being different.
