The family als desn’t have the Internet r TV, which means there’s n “digital babysitter” and he has t rely n his wn creative ways t bnd with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has ccupied them these days is reading bks tgether.
Burke admits that he thught he was “t cl” fr the bks when they first came ut and he was in his twenties, but he’s lving reading them nw. “We switch ff chapter by chapter reading them ut lud,“Burke explains.” This nt nly allws her t get mre used t reading alud in frnt f smene, but it gets me directly invlved in smething she lves, and it gives me the chance t be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself int the characters in the bk, which has prven t be a tn f fun.”

Fr decades sleep scientists have thught ver the link between dreaming and creative inspiratin. They have lng thught the insight came frm the stage f rapid eye mvement sleep, which is rich with dreams and begins arund 90 minutes after ne falling asleep. But new evidence puts the sptlight n a much earlier phase — the perid that separates sleep and wakefulness. In a study by MIT, researchers shw that peple wh take brief naps (小睡) that bring abut the beginning f sleep scre higher n several measures f creativity than thse wh undertake the tasks after staying awake.
The findings suggest researchers culd even exercise sme measure f cntrl ver the dreaming prcess by directing peple's dreams tward a specific tpic. The mre frequently peple dreamed abut that, the mre creative they were n tasks related t it. “We can cme t the cnclusin that dreaming abut a tpic enhances yur subsequent creativity n it,” says Rbert Stickgld, a member f the study team.
The experiment tk advantage f a glvelike sleep detectr, which charts sleep by mnitring ne's muscle tne, skin cnductance and heart rate thrugh cntacts n the wrist and hand. It cmmunicates with an app that issues vice prmpts (提示) fr dreams and recrds dream reprts.
Mre than ne famus thinker has capitalized n the phase called nn-rapid eye mvement sleep stage 1,r N1, illustrating the pint abut generating creative insights. The painter Salvadr Dalí wuld deliberately nap, hlding a set f keys abve a metal plate, when thinking ver an idea fr a painting. As he ndded ff, he'd drp the keys, which wuld hit the plate and wake him up, and he'd hld nt the image frm his dream. Thmas Alva Edisn is said t have used a similar technique with metal balls t gain insights.
“It's exciting because, in principle, peple culd use the technlgy themselves t develp creativity,” says Jnathan Schler, a prfessr f psychlgical and brain sciences at the University f Califrnia. There seems t be n shrtage f flks cming t try it. “S many different kinds f peple have visited, kncking n the lab dr and asking t have dreams,” c-lead investigatr Haar Hrwitz says.

A. The initial sleep stage.B. The middle f the sleep cycle.

9. What d the findings mentined in paragraph 2 shw?

D
I’m used t seeing small leaps in technlgical prgress, but ccasinally, there are things that will still shck me. At the end f last year, a cmpany called OpenAI released a truly jaw-drpping demnstratin f a new AI technlgy that feels almst like technlgy has skipped ahead by a few generatins.
This new AI technlgy is called ChatGPT, a cmputer prgram that can understand and respnd t human language. It is trained n a lt f text, s it can understand what peple are saying and respnd in a way that sunds like a real persn. What’s even mre amazing is that ChatGPT seems frighteningly human in its ability t understand questins and answer them cmpetently. “Write a stry abut Lenard da Vinci in the style f Rald Dahl,” yu can ask it, and it’ll spin up a pretty gd children’s stry.
One area where I’ve fund ChatGPT t be enrmusly useful is its ability t write cmputer cde. This has particularly amazed me as unlike the English language, when yu write cde it has t be very precise and carefully structured – but when I asked it t write me a prgram that wuld put sme data int a database fr me, in a particularly cmplex way, within secnds it generated smething that wuld have taken me hurs t d manually (人工地).
ChatGPT isn’t cmpletely human, hwever. Fr example, it smetimes generates things that sund true, but are actually just nnsense. This is because f the way the AI learns thrugh pattern recgnitin. There’s n real intelligence perating there – it is just repeating smething based n what it has “read” befre. ChatGPT is better at sme tasks than thers: it can write a brilliant invitatin email, but its ability t rhyme leaves a lt t be desired.
And this is why I’m pretty cnvinced that ChatGPT is ging t change the wrld, sner rather than later. It’s already hugely impressive, but what exists at the mment is just a demnstratin. Once the same AI is built int ther apps and can cnnect t the live internet t learn mre, it will becme even mre sphisticated. Our cmputers will n lnger be just ur wrd prcessrs, but ur writing partners t.
12. What can we learn abut ChatGPT frm the secnd paragraph?
A. It can talk t peple with emtin.
B. It seems like having a cnversatin with a real persn.
C. It is unable t generate riginal cntent.
D. What it can d frightens many peple.
13. Which aspect abut ChatGPT’s ability t generate respnses des the authr feel t be particularly useful?
A. Its efficiency.B. Its precisin.C. Its structure.D. Its diversity.
14. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A. AI cannt think the same way as humans d.
B. There’s n real intelligence in the wrld.
C. ChatGPT has sme limitatins.
D. ChatGPT is better than ther chatbt AI.
15. What is the authr’s attitude tward ChatGPT?
A. Optimistic.B. Wrried.C. Dubtful.D. Cnservative.
