Every afternn arund fur 'clck, a grup f schl children wuld burst int the shp, and business wuld cme t a stp. Adults wuld glance in, see the crwd and pass n. But I didn't mind if the children waited fr their bus inside. Smetimes I wuld hand ut a bus fare when a ticket went missing—always repaid the next day. On snwy days I wuld give away sme dughnuts. I wuld lck the dr at clsing time, and we waited in the warm shp until their bus finally arrived.
I enjyed my yung friends, but it never ccurred t me that I played an imprtant rle in their lives—until ne afternn when a man came and asked if I was the girl wrking n weekdays arund fur 'clck. He identified himself as the father f tw f my favrites.
“I want yu t knw I appreciate what yu d fr my children. I wrry abut them taking tw buses t get hme. It means a lt that they can wait here and yu keep an eye n them. When they are with the dughnut lady, I knw they are safe.” I tld him it wasn't a big deal, and that I enjyed the kids.
S I was the Dughnut Lady. I nt nly received a title, but became a landmark. Nw I think abut all the peple wh keep an eye n my wn children. They becme, well, Dughnut Ladies. Like the men at the skating rink, wh let my bys ring hme; r the bus driver wh drve my daughter t her stp at the end f the rute at night but wuldn't leave until I arrived t pick her up; r that nice plice fficer wh tk pity n my bys walking hme in the rain when I was at wrk—even thugh the phne rang all the next day with calls frm curius neighbrs. “Was that a plice car I saw at yur huse last night?”

Fr as lng as there have been gifts, we naturally make chices based n the recipient (接受者). But what if we have been wrng all alng and that we culd turn things arund, which nt nly made gift buying easier, but the recipient happier?
In 2015, psychlgists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin cnducted an nline survey, which suggested that when peple buy gifts, they prefer t chse smething based n the recipient’s persnality and tastes. Mst peple als said that they preferred receiving gifts bught with them in mind: gifts fr them.
But Human and Aknin wndered if this apprach t giving failed t take advantage f the way we cnnect as peple. S they sent 78 vlunteers int a shpping centre befre Mther’s Day. Half were tld t buy a card that “reveals(揭示) yur knwledge f the recipient” while the thers set ut t buy a card that “reveals yur true self”. After the purchase, the givers wh had thught partly f themselves reprted feeling emtinally clser t their mthers.
T find ut hw that apprach ges dwn with recipients, the psychlgists did anther test, asking mre than 100 students t chse a sng n iTunes t give t a friend, partner r family member. Each half f the grup received the same instructins as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients f sngs that revealed smething f the givers felt clser t them than thse wh received gifts bught nly with them in mind.
Human and Aknin suggest it might apply t all gifts. “If building strnger scial cnnectins is the underlying (潜在的) gal” f a gift and surely it shuld be—then we “may well be advised t ffer mre self-reflective gifts”. In shrt, fr a present t be meaningful, yu need t give away a bit f yurself, even if there is a risk that the gift might nt s clsely suit the recipient’s practical needs r tastes as ne acquired purely with that in mind.
Mrever, giving smething f neself can be a safer act, the psychlgists added. Because it reduces the risk f revealing pr knwledge f a recipient by attempting t buy smething that fits their character—and failing.
But a nte f cautin here: what the research des nt examine is the ptential risk in repeated, unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, accrding t Human and Aknin “culd signal self-bsessin” —and nbdy wants t reveal that abut themselves.
46. Frm the Mther’s Day card test, we can cnclude that .
A. gifts chsen with the giver in mind wrk well n the giver

If I culd give tday’s yung peple three wishes, they wuld be: Mre hugs. Mre time utside in nature. Mre belief in their wn pwer t change the wrld. While mst peple understand the imprtance f the first tw wishes, the third ne leaves sme flks wndering why yung peple’s belief in their wn pwer is s essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all f us-especially yung peple-need heres. We need them t be ur guides n the difficult trail (足迹) we call life and t shw us just hw far we can g. And we need heres tday mre than ever. Our mdern sciety is terribly cnfused abut the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a her. And the difference is vital. A celebrity is all abut fame (名望)-temprary, superficial fame, usually fr qualities that are easy t see: a pretty face, a great dance mve. A her, by cntrast, is abut character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take actin.
Heres are all arund us. They truly hld ur wrld tgether, thrugh their unselfish devtin t helping thers, teaching children, and prtecting the envirnment. They dn’t want fame, r glry; they just want t help. In s many ways, these unsung heres pilt the bat in which all f us sail.
Yet, yung peple hear a lt mre abut celebrities than abut heres in the media. The hidden message they get frm all this is that their self-wrth cmes frm what they buy-which shes, which cell phne-nt wh they are dwn inside. What gets lst in this? Yung peple’s sense f their wn ptential fr heric qualities-their wn pwer t make a psitive difference in the wrld. Truth is, there is a ptential her, a future difference maker, in every yung persn. Each f them, frm whatever backgrund, is a psitive frce wh can d smething. All it takes fr that t be true is belief.
Hw d we help yung peple believe in their wn pwer? The best way is simply t share examples, f ther yung peple wh have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11, has wrked tirelessly t raise mney t prvide clean drinking water t African villages. When he first heard abut the plight (困苦) f African children wh died frm impure water, Ryan was nly six years ld. In the next five years, he raised ver $500, 000-enugh t build ver 70 water wells.
Barbara, age 17, grew up n a farm in Texas. When she realized that lcal farmers were puring their used mtr il int rivers, causing pllutin, she rganized the creatin f a recycling center fr crude (未加提炼的) il. Her prject has grwn t include 18 recycling centers in Texas.
The list culd cntinue. These are but a few examples f yung peple wh have discvered that they can build n their wn energy t d smething great.

C. By giving examples f yung peple wh shw the qualities f a her.
