    分析:这个长句的主干是“主谓宾”结构(her tutr explained that ...)。句首的“The first time that ...”是时间状语,其中含有that引导的定语从句,修饰time。主句谓语动词explained后面是两个that引导的宾语从句“that she must acknwledge ...”和“but that he mainly wanted ...”。在第一个宾语从句中,谓语动词acknwledge后跟一个宾语从句“what ther peple had said”和一个状语从句“if she cited their ideas”;在第二个宾语从句中,从句“what she thught”作动词knw 的宾语。句意:                 
    她第一次写论文时,导师跟她解释说,如果引用别人的观点就一定要注明,不过导师主要是想知道她自己是怎么想的。


    通过分析长句,理解复杂句意 英语句子结构与汉语有别,句意也并非从前到后的简单的单词意义的罗列,因此理解起来有些困难,其中最难的就是长句。长句分析过程主要分为以下几步: (1)首先确定句子是并列句还是复合句。  (2)在复合句中分离出主句和从句。  (3)分析修饰成分,明确全句意义。
