When I was in the seventh grade (年级), I was shy and quiet, so I was easily bullied (受欺负). I used to get very sad about it.
In an art lesson, just while the teacher was out, a big boy took away my pencil box, threw it across the classroom and sat back down. Later on, he took my schoolbag and pulled it towards him. I pulled back the schoolbag from his hand and for the first time. I pushed him away and hit him on the back. In the rest of the lesson, I was nervous. I did nothing but imagined what would happen next.
Then the teacher came to me, “Peter, are you OK?”
“ Yes,” I answered.
“No, you are not. Come to my office after class,” he said.
There we had a long talk. He made me smile and I became confident (自信的) again.
He taught me some life lessons, and said, “Get up, and don’t be a bully yourself, but remember you are stronger inside, and if the bullies (欺凌者) see this, they will stop.” I remembered these words. From then on (从那时起), every time I walked to school, I put my head high on the way, and the bullying soon stopped.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has begun in Qatar. It is the biggest and also the most eye-catching sporting event in the world. But this year’s event looks quite different for two main reasons.
First, it’s the first time in history that the event is happening in winter, from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. This is because Qatar is a desert country and in summer the temperature can be as high as 42℃. So it’s too hot to play outdoor sports. But it’s still warm in winter. The temperature in the stadiums (体育场) can be around 20℃ to 30℃, which is just right for the event.
Another reason is that Chinese elements(元素), from brand support to construction(建筑), can be found both on and off the field. The idea of “Made in China” is also catching the world’s attention.
According to Global Data, a data analysis and consulting company based in London, Chinese companies have put $1.4 billion (about 10 billion yuan) into the event, making them its biggest sponsors(赞助商).
China Railway Construction Corporation designed and built the Lusail Stadium. With 80,000 seats, it’s the largest of the eight stadiums for the World Cup. As the main stadium, it will hold the closing ceremonies and 10 games, including the final. Besides the stadium, Chinese companies from Guangdong and Zhejiang have provided more than 10,000 container houses for tourists and soccer fans to live in.
“The World Cup sponsorship by a large number of Chinese companies shows China’s economic power and makes the world feel the power of Chinese brands,” Song Xiangqing, vice-president of the Commerce Economy Association of China, told China Daily.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low , because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (渠) and other projects began to be built in my village. They were good men from our government.
Later, I moved to another city. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard, so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.

Is it possible to look through the Internet, talk with your friends on apps, or even read a map on your coat in the near future? Yes, your coat!
It may sound silly, but it’s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital screen. Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make “digital cloth”. The first is to find out the right thread(线). After testing many of them, they choose two special ones: One can light up, and the other can conduct(传导)electricity.
The results have been admirable. The cloth is not only wearable and foldable, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry cycles in a washing machine and folded 10,000times, the cloth kept almost unchanged. It is just like putting a phone screen into the coat. Wear it and then it can show you a lot of information you want.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language difficulties or disabilities.
In one test, Peng’s team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or meditating. The waves were then turned into messages like “nervous” or “relaxed” and shown on the cloth. This could help deaf-mute(聋哑的)people “talk” to each other in the future.
“We hope that new materials will shape next-generation(下一代)electronic devices by changing the way we communicate with them,” said Peng.

When students got their textbooks at the beginning of the year at San Mateo High School, they also got the Yondr pouch(小袋子), a locking device(锁定装置)for their phones. The phone is put into it and gets locked through a magnetic device. It’s not unlocked again until the final bell rings. It will be repeated every day for the rest of the school year.
Adam Gelb, the vice-president of the school, wishes to create phone-free spaces, because now most students just lower their heads and seldom communicate with each other.
Brad Friedman, a teacher at the school, said he was worried about the overuse of phones at school. He said he often saw students completely lost themselves in the mobile phones, some not talking at all with other students. Recently, he has already seen the difference. “Everyone else was talking and eating lunch together. That’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage was at its worst.” he said.
A senior at San Mateo High School, Djelani Philips-Diop, said he was exactly surprised at first when he heard he had to lock his phone. “I worried, I guess. Last year when I had my mobile phone, I used it every day,” he said.
In case of emergency(紧急事件), every classroom has the unlocking device. Teachers are still able to use their own cellphones and desk phones. “We’ve gotten all 1,700 students’ phones unlocked in a matter of minutes,” said Gelb. “We spoke to four students who, feeling angry at first, agreed that a phone-free school experience does some help.”

Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Lastly, communications have become much easier than before. In the past, young married couples(夫妇) often had children right after getting married. They didn’t ask themselves if they had the wish to stay up at night with babies, to give up going out at night whenever they wanted to. Now many young couples feel that not having children will make them have a different life style. They prefer to have a more comfortable one.
Michael Shandrik, 30, and his wife Pamela, 28, for example, have joined the growing number of young couples who don’t have and do not want children. Many of their close friends are childless and plan to keep that way. Michael says the decision not to have children developed over four years of marriage. He explains, “We never decided to become childless. It more or less became an understanding after we got married.” Pamela adds, “If I had married before 23, I probably would have children. But as the years went by, I got used to the idea of working and not having children. It’s too late to change now.”
For both of them, the wish for a free life-style played a big part in the decision. Michael, who wants to build a career in communications, makes the point. “We would buy the things we really want instead of going without things because of the children. If we had a child, we would have to start thinking about its education and health. We need the happiness of getting up and going somewhere whenever we want.”

I’m a 34-year-old man, married, lived in a nice house, and have a successful career. But my life was not always so great. I had a learning disability from an early age. I went to a special school where I got plenty of extra (额外的) help. Still, I suffered (遭受) the rest of my school days in public schools.
My life improved greatly when I discovered art. The art world gave me a chance to express myself without words. I went to a workshop and gradually became good at making things with clay. Here I learned my first important lesson: disabled as I was in language, I could still be smart and well express myself with clay. And my confidence (自信) came along.
I got my next lesson from rock climbing. It was a fun thing but I was scared from the start. I soon noticed it wasn’t a talent thing: it needed lots of practice. So I did it more. After about five years of climbing, I found myself in Yosemite Valley on a big wall. I learned that if you fall in love with something and do it all the time, you will get better at it.
Later, I decided to learn how to read and write. I practiced reading and writing, which I used to avoid as much as possible. After two years, I was literate (有文化的).
Through the long process with art, rock climbing, and reading and writing, now I’ve got to a point in my life: I am smart enough to dive into (潜入) an area that is totally unknown, hard, but interesting.

Do you like reading books? How do you usually do it? Smartphones and e-readershave become more common in recent years. Some people worry that the days of paperbooks will be gone. But recent studies have shown that traditional books become popular again among readers.
According to the latest research in the UK, sales of e-books are falling while salesof paper books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the mostphysical books. Another study of university students from the United States, Slovakia, Japan and Germany also shows that 92 percent of them like paper books better.
So what is behind this?
The most popular reason given was “I like to hold the books.” Reading paper booksis very different from reading e-books. Slovakian students said that they liked the smell of paper books. Other students said that they got a feeling of achievement when theyfinished reading a paper book and they enjoyed seeing it on the bookshelf.
Paper books can also be very personal objects to lovers of reading. Many people like sign their name on the inside cover. The cover may get bent (弯曲) or there may bea stain (污点) made on the pages from coffee or food. But these accidents make the bookeven more personal. It’s as if readers make friends with them.
This “friendship” people develop with books isn’t just sentimental (情感的). Research has shown that readers remember more information reading from paper books than e-books. People also more easily end up with headaches or sore eyes while reading e-books.
It seems that paper books, which have been made since the 15th century, still have an attraction. So why not pick up a paper book and start reading?

Changes in My Hometown
China has developed so fast in recent years. Great changes have taken place in my hometown. In the past, the living conditions were hard. There used to be old houses. A big family had to share small rooms. The roads were narrow and there were not many buses or cars. People went to work on foot or by bike. People kept in touch with friends mainly by sending letters.
Now, the living conditions are comfortable. Most families have moved into tall buildings now. The ring roads are wide. Some people have their own cars. People can communicate with each other by cell phone. What’s more, people can do many things to relax themselves, such as going traveling and doing sports.
I am glad to see these great changes in my hometown. I’m proud of the rapid development in my hometown. I’m sure my hometown will become better and better in the future.

46.The writer starts to talk about the coat with a _________.
A.story B.lesson C.game D.question
47.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.they only use one kind of thread to make the coat

C.where to buy the coat D.how it can help us
49.The underlined word “meditating” in Paragraph 5 means “________” in Chinese.
A.争吵 B.打架 C.冥想 D.讨论
50.What is the best title for this passage?

Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools that we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.
Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Lastly, communications have become much easier than before. In the past, we kept in touch with others by writing letters or sending faxes, but now we have many other ways to choose from, such as making a phone call, sending emails or messages and chatting online. Moreover, we can even see the people whom we care making a phone call with through mobile phones, and we can see each other while chatting online.

After about five years of climbing, I found myself in Yosemite Valley on a big wall. I learned that if you fall in love with something and do it all the time, you will get better at it.
