Vidal first experienced Brazil’s carnival celebrations as a baby living in Salvador, the capital of Bahia State. Before he was even one year old, his mother took him to his first carnival event.
The cultural traditions of Salvador have stuck with him. And, Vidal, a trained musician, now performs the typical music of Bahia in the US. He often plays in the Washington area.
February is the carnival season in Brazil and other countries around the world. Even the Washington area celebrates the season. Last week,Vidal and other musicians performed here for a carnival celebration. Performing in Washington and other US cities has helped Vidal stay close to his Brazilian roots(根).
“Living in the US now and not being able to enjoy carnival as I used to in Brazil with my friends and family is really heartbreaking. And that was the reason why I decided to start making my own events—carnival parties—just to get connected to my roots, to my happiness.”
It may come as a surprise, but Washington is said to have one of the largest followings for Brazilian culture in the US. This year alone, there are more than twelve carnival celebrations in the Washington area. Here, the season isn’t celebrated on city streets as in Brazil, where it is warm summer. February is one of Washington’s coldest months. So, the events take place at theatres, restaurants and other places.
Carnival is one of the world’s biggest celebrations. In many countries, activities take place for a few weeks each year and include huge parades(游行) and street parties with live music. Carnival goers wear colourful, themed clothing and masks(面具).

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade, or so we thought. We bought her a lovely doll and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 24th, she said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else”.
It was just too late. With all the details of preparing Christmas dinner and buying last-minute gifts, we didn’t have the time to select the “right bike” for our little girl. So here we were—Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, lying in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child. Suddenly my husband had a good idea. “What if I make a little bicycle out of soil and write a note that she could trade the soil model in for a real bike?” he asked. I agreed. So he spent the next four hours working hard with soil to make a tiny bike.
On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little heart-shaped package with the beautiful red and white soil bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud. Then she asked, “Does this mean that I can trade in this bike that daddy made me for a real one?” I said delightedly, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that daddy made me. I’d rather keep this than get a real bike.” At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle on the planet!
5. What’s the right time order of the events?
a. The girl asked for a new bike.
b. The girl opened the little heart-shaped package.
c. The parents bought the girl a modern and popular doll.
d. The father made the girl a bike with soil.
e. The girl would rather keep the soil bike than get a real one.
A. a, b, c, e, d B. a, b, d, c, e
C. a, c, d, b, e D. a, c, b, d, e
6. What do we know about Almie Rose?
A. She never lost her desire for a bike.
B. Her parents wanted her to have the soil bike forever.
C. Her parents paid no attention to her desire for a bike.
D. She had tears in her eyes because she didn’t like the present at all.
答案:A
7. Why did dad make the soil bicycle for his daughter?
A. He thought she would like it.
B. He didn’t want to disappoint her.
C. He wanted her to buy a real one.
D. He wanted to give her a surprise.
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child.”判断,父亲制作自行车是不想让女儿失望。

A. Moved and proud.
B. Comfortable and relaxed.

North America will have six more weeks of winter, says “Punxsutawney Phil”,the most famous groundhog(土拨鼠) in the United States.
Every year, thousands of people from across the US travel to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. On the night of February 1st, they go to a hill called Gobbler’s Knob. There, they wait until sunrise, when Phil leaves his home to look for his shadow. Tradition says that if the animal sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. But if skies are cloudy and no dark shape appears, Americans can expect spring to arrive early.
Groundhog Day is said to come from a European tradition called “Candlemas”. February 2nd was the middle of winter, and in Europe, clergymen would give candles to people at religious services. When lit, the candles brightened up the community in the dead of winter.
Later, in Germany, the tradition changed, and people instead began looking for signs of increased sunlight and changes in the weather. If an animal saw its shadow on Candlemas Day, this meant six more weeks of winter, or the “Second Winter”.
The tradition came to North America when German immigrants arrived in what is now the eastern state of Pennsylvania. They chose the groundhog as the animal to continue the tradition. The first official Groundhog Day at Gobbler’s Knob was held in 1887. The event has continued there ever since and has become part of American culture. Other states now celebrate their own Groundhog Day with their own groundhog. In North Carolina, his name is Sir Walter Wally. In West Virginia, people turn to French Creek Freddie.
Groundhog Day has also been popular in American media. In the 1993 film Groundhog Day, a reporter visits Punxsutawney for the big event, but becomes stuck in time. He then has to repeat the same day over and over again, until he becomes a better person.
