Hotels often undergo makeovers. However, few can compete with the Ice hotel in Jukkasjãrvi, Sweden. Carved entirely from “Snice”—a mix of snow and ice—the hotel is rebuilt annually, with each version more impressive than the previous one. The 32nd Ice hotel was open to guests on April 17, 2022.
The mustvisit Swedish tourist destination came about accidentally. In 1989, Ice hotel's founder Yngve Berquist organized an art show to attract tourists to Jukkasjärvi during the chilly winter months. The exhibition, held inside a 5.5squaremetre igloo (冰屋), was a runaway (迅速的) success. Many visitors decided to spend the night, selling out all of Jukkasjärvi's warm houses. Hence, when a group approached Berquist about a place to spend the night, he offered them the igloo. “To my surprise, the guests were very impressed by the experience the morning after. Ice hotel was born,” Berquist recalls.
The Ice hotel has come a long way since its humble (简陋的) start. Constructed from 1,000 tons of ice, and 30,000 tons of “Snice”, it now covers an area of over 5,500 square metres. Preparations for the annual hotel begin in March with the harvesting of 5,000 tons of ice from the nearby Torne River. The ice is kept in cold storage until November when about 100 workers and artists get to work carving out a new structure. Ice hotel is typically open for business by midDecember.
This year's hotel comprises 36 rooms, including 12 crafted art suites (套间). Decorated with massive ice stones and carved water shapes, it aims to provide visitors with a good nature experience. The “Dickensian Street” suite promises to take visitors on a tour of 19thcentury England, complete with cobbled (铺鹅卵石的) streets, shops, and buildings from the era. Guests are advised to stay inside thermal (保暖的) sleeping bags and wear gloves and winter hats all night. Not surprisingly, most move to the conventional, warmer cabins nearby after a single night.
24.When was Sweden's Ice hotel open for the 22nd time?
    A.In 2012. B.In 1992. C.In 1990. D.In 2022.
25.What made Ice hotel come into being?
A.Warm houses' being sold out. B.The special warmth of it.
C.The cheap ticket of it. D.The unique structures of ice.
26.What's the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.Differences of Ice hotel rebuilt from ever before.
B.The preparations for the annual hotel rebuilt.
C.How the ice is kept in cold storage in Ice hotel.
D.The development and construction of Ice hotel.

Discoveries at the famous Sanxingdui ruins in Southwest China show that the region's ancient Shu Kingdom Civilization shared similarities with the Maya.
The Sanxingdui ruins belonged to the Shu Kingdom that existed at least 4,800 years ago and lasted more than 2,000 years, while the Mayan civilization built its citystates around 200 AD.
The bronzemade remains of trees unearthed at the ruins of the Shu Kingdom resemble the sacred ceiba tree, which symbolized the union of heaven, earth and the underworld in the Mayan civilization. “They are very important similarities,” says Santos, a Mexican archaeologist (考古学家) stressing that “the representations of trees in both cultures provide a symbolism that is very similar”.
The findings at the Sanxingdui ruins, considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, also show a new aspect of Bronze Age culture, indicating the ancient civilization already had technologies that were thought to have been developed much later.
While the time span between the Shu kingdom and the Mayan culture is great, the findings highlight the closeness between the two civilizations. They developed in areas with comparable climates and reflected their worldview through related symbols. “In the end,man is still man, independent of time and space. What we have is that, at this latitude (纬度), both the Shu people and the Mayans looked at the same sky and had the same stars on the horizon,” the expert says.
One notable feature of the recent discoveries at Sanxingdui was the crosssubject work and technology applied by teams of Chinese archaeologists, which allowed the unearthing of artifacts as fragile as silk remains, which other types of less careful digging methods would not have been able to register.
Cooperation between Chinese and Mexican archaeologists could benefit projects in the Mayan world, where the rainy climate and humidity are problematic for the conservation of ruins.
“Every time our cultural knowledge increases, regardless of whether we speak one language or another, what it shows us is that we continue to be sister cultures and, therefore, the exchange of such knowledge is fundamental,” says Santos.
28.What is a similarity between the Shu Kingdom and Maya civilization?
A.Their starting time. B.Their historical origins.
C.Their cultural symbols. D.Their ceremony traditions.
29.What have the the findings at the Sanxingdui proved?
A.Silk was a common clothing material then.
B.Some technologies were developed much earlier.
C.The Bronze Age started earlier than previously assumed.
D.The Shu Kingdom and the Mayan world had close contact.
30.What is a common challenge for the conservation of both ruins?
    A.Damp weather. B.Positioning of ruins.
    C.High latitude. D.Language barriers.
31.What is the focus of Santos quote in the last paragraph?
A.The future of the ChinaMexico cooperation.
B.The benefits of speaking a different language.
C.The importance of the exchange of cultural knowledge.
D.The increasing sisterhood in culture between China and Mexico.

When you step off the elevator on the fourth floor of Kentucky Children's Hospital(KCH), you're greeted by a magical unicorn (独角兽) in a combination of greens, blues, and purples.
It is a collaborative art piece, created by the staff of KCH and UK Arts in HealthCare. This mosaic (镶嵌图案), roughly five feet tall and six feet wide, is made up of nothing but thousands of vial (药水瓶) caps, oral syringe caps, clamps, and tubes to create an image of a unicorn, silently greeting and comforting every patient and visitor.
The idea for this mosaic was inspired by Tilda Shalof, a nurse in Canada who spent nearly 30 years collecting abandoned medical plastic to create a colorful mosaic. KCH nurses approached the Child Life staff about creating something analogous for their hospital. The staff agreed, and collection of plastic began.
Soon the collection numbered in the thousands, but the question remained what would this become? After many meetings and discussions, KCH staff settled on the idea of a unicorn. After all, unicorns become the source where all dreamy thoughts can be achieved. Meeting a unicorn and making friends with it could be so appealing to children. More than stories about the healing power, for children, a unicorn might even have the magic power to change anything.
Lexington artist Christine Kuhn joined the team to provide guidance on the design and construction process, but the work was done entirely by KCH staff who volunteered their time. “As the unicorn started to take shape, it became even clearer that many hands were present in the artwork,” said Joey Burke, a nurse ethicist. “Several music therapists asked if they could add a guitar pick and a member of the maintenance crew added a wire nut. In the end, medical waste became fantastic as the unicorn took shape.”
When completed, this grand creature needed a name, so a contest was held among KCH staff and patients. The name with the most votes was Unity “MoonPie” McSparkles.
32.What is special about the art piece displayed in KCH?
A.It is small in size and portable.
    B.It involves just one color.
C.It is a joint effort of the Child Life staff and parents.
D.It is composed entirely of hospital plastic waste.
33.What does the underlined word “analogous” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
    A.Similar. B.Necessary. C.Meaningful. D.Challenging.
34.What made KCH staff decide to make a unicom?
A.It works well with plastic products.
B.It symbolizes hope, healing, and magic.
C.It appears in many KCH members' dreams.
D.It can help strike up friendships among patients.
35.What do Joey Burke's words in Paragraph 5 imply?
A.The design of the mosaic was a bit complicated.
B.Some members opposed reusing medical waste.
C.The staff were enthusiastic about the unicorn work.
D.The collection of medical waste was timeconsuming.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales coloured my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa's stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to Grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memoryloss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia(痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer's disease. Following the doctor's directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get better care. After that, Grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa's birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing Grandpa sitting in his armchair, dulllooking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled Grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn't express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadowy box with some old yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighbourhood, and I were playing basketball with Grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my Grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, Grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in Grandpa's eyes and a smile on his lips.

W: Ah, a top student. What about your computer skills?
M: I'm professional with Microsoft, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and the Internet.
W: Um... We can hire you. You can get 1,850 dollars a month at the beginning. And you may get a raise in three months' time if you can do a good job.
M: Great! How long should I work every day?
W:Six hours a day and two days off every week.
M: OK. When shall I start to work?
    W: This coming Wednesday.
    M: OK. Thanks very much.
    Text 8
W: The boss wants a decision this week on whom we plan to send to run the branch office.
M: Well, let's have a look at them again. I still think Betty is the best choice. She's the only one who can speak Spanish.
W: True, but she's only been with us for a year...
M: Well, Mr Smith has been with us for five years, but he can't move overseas very easily. He has two children in school here. His wife works here.
W: Hmm, I see your point. Well, that leaves Jeff. He can't speak Spanish, but he's good at languages so he can learn. He already speaks French and German very well. He isn't married and he doesn't have kids.
M: So he can move. He has three years' experience with us. That's good.
W: So it is Jeff, then. How soon can he move?
M: I don't know. I'll give him a call and ask him to come and have a chat this afternoon. Can you come here too? Say 2 o'clock? And let's talk with him together.
    W: Yeah. See you then.
    Text 9
    W: How are things, Henry?
M: Fine, Jane. It's a long working day but I'm used to that, so it doesn't trouble me too much.
W: Travelling to your office in downtown London every day—don't you find it troublesome?
M: It was hard at first—especially getting up before dawn to catch that 6:30 train. But it's bearable now that I'm used to it.
W: Don't you think it's a terrible waste of time? I couldn't bear to spend three hours sitting in a train every day.
M: I used to feel the same as you, but now I quite enjoy it.
W: Enjoy it? How do you pass the time?
M: In the morning I read papers to catch up with the news; on the way home in the evening I relax with a good book, or talk with friends or even have a game of bridge.
W: Sounds like a good club. You never know, I may join it!
    Text 10
After a year of preparing herself, Laura Dekker has been given permission to sail around the world. “I was so happy that I almost jumped into the water,” Laura said, after learning of the court's decision.
The 14yearold was born on a ship in the South Pacific, and currently lives with her father on a boat. When child protection agencies heard about her plan to sail alone, they took the case to court and prevented her from making such a dangerous voyage.
Since the decision, though, Laura had been preparing with her father to convince the court that she was ready. Later on, she received the books and other materials she would need for school while she was at sea. She added safety equipment to a new, big boat. And she took first aid courses to learn survival skills, like how to put out fires on the boat, take care of her own injuries and deal with lack of sleep. She also planned a safer course—adding alternate routes to avoid pirate attacks, and planning a course that would have her on dry land as she moved from port to port across the globe.
Even with all of the added preparations, the trip still has its risks. In early June, 16yearold Abby Sunderland, an American, had to give up her attempt to become the youngest sailor to travel around the world. The mask of her boat broke due to rough waters in the Indian Ocean, and she was rescued by a French fishing ship.
Laura plans to take longer than Abby for her voyage, and is using a larger and more stable boat. If she finishes successfully in less than two years, she will take the title from the current recordholder Jessica Watson, of Australia, who was 16 when she completed the journey.

24.答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句话“The 32nd Ice hotel was open to guests until April 17, 2022.”可知,2022年4月17日,冰上酒店第32次向客人开放。同时根据“Carved entirely from ‘Snice’—a mix of snow and ice—the hotel is rebuilt annually, with each version more impressive than the previous one.”可知,这家酒店每年都会重建一次,每一个版本都比前一个版本更令人印象深刻。由此可知,这家酒店一年被重建一次,2022年是第32次开放,那么第22次开放应该是在2012年。故选A项。
25.答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The exhibition, held inside a 5.5squaremetre igloo(冰屋), was a runaway(迅速的)success. Many visitors decided to spend the night, selling out all of Jukkasjärvi's warm houses. Hence, when a group approached Berquist about a place to spend the night, he offered them the igloo.(在一个5.5平方米的冰屋内举行的展览是一个成功,许多游客决定在那里过夜,Jukkasjarvi所有温暖的小屋都卖光了。因此,当一群人想让Berquist提供过夜的处所时,Berquist提供了冰屋。)”可知,A项表述正确。

33.答案与解析:A 词句猜测题。根据第三段“The idea for this mosaic was inspired by Tilda Shalof, a nurse in Canada who spent nearly 30 years collecting abandoned medical plastic to create a colorful mosaic.”及“The staff agreed, and collection of plastic began.”可知,蒂尔达·沙洛夫用医用塑料制作了一副彩色马赛克,所以医院的工作人员联系她,想让她创造一副用医用塑料做的相似的作品放置到医院里。据此可推知,画线单词analogous意为“相似的”。故选A。
34.答案与解析:B 推理判断题。根据第四段中“More than stories about the healing power, for children, a unicorn might even have the magic power to change anything.”可推知,KHC的员工觉得对于生病孩子们来说,独角兽可以给他们战胜病魔的希望。所以它象征着治愈、希望和魔力。故选B。

In the end, medical waste became fantastic as the unicorn took shape.”可推知,医院的工作人员对于独角兽这幅作品充满热情,每个人都自愿的为这幅作品的创造出一份力。故选C。

    参考范文:
    DearDavid,
Hearing you encounter some difficulty when planning to hold an activity called Into Chinese Opera, I'm writing to recommend Beijing Opera to you and offer some relevant suggestions.
Beijing Opera, the cream of the Chinese culture, enjoys great popularity in China with its costumes and facial masks. To hold the activity successfully, it is advisable to provide authentic performances, thus exposing students to the charm of ancient art. Besides, platforms can be offered for students to try on opera clothes, and even participate in the performances.
Hope my suggestion will be helpful and wish you every success in your activity.
    Yours,
    LiHua

    参考范文:
AbrightideaforGrandpa'sbirthdaycametomymind. “Why not give Grandpa a surprise?” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similarlooking basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While playing, I kept an eye on Grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing “thesameplayers” playingthere, Grandpaseemedtohavethoughtofsomething. Glancing at Grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. Indeed, my plan worked somewhat. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my life. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain—it'd definitely stick in mine.
