passage 1
Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing(令人迷惑的).A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They found that miscommunication was always possible, even over something as simple as "yes" and "no".
On her first day in Micronesia,an island in the Pacific,Lisa thought people weren't paying any attention to her.The day was hot.She went into a store and asked,"Do you have cold drinks?" The woman there didn't say anything.Lisa repeated the question.Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her.She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛),which in Micronesia means "yes".
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria,a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter,"Do you have cabbage today?" He nodded his head.Jan waited, but the cabbage never came.In that country,a nod means "no".
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class,he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head.He thought some people had not understood,so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean "yes" or "no".

passage 3
My name is Sara. When I was little,I played the drums.I also had a guitar. In fourth grade,I started playing the trombone(长号).I practised about four hours a week. All of this might not seem like a big deal for a lot of kids, but there's something about me that makes me a bit different from others.I was born without hands .Since I was about one year old,I've worn prosthetics(假肢).
This year,I got an invitation to join the high school marching band(行进管乐队)I told my mom I wanted to do it.But I had an instructor who thought I would not be able to march in the band﹣﹣not because it was a high school band and I was only in seventh grade, but probably because my body was different. All I wanted was to show that I could do it,so I joined the band. And it paid off!
Music gives me energy. That happens sometimes. One time I was so down,I didn't even want to get out of bed. Then I hit my MP3 player by accident.A song came on,and I got up and started dancing. It helped me say to myself,"OK,I can get through today."
Around my musician friends,we all share the same problems, like working out how many beats there are in a measure(小节).I have a hard time counting the beats, but so do a lot of the other kids. It's a normal problem that we musicians share. When I'm with the band,I don't feel as different as I do in other situations. It's just another way that music makes me want to go on,and not to just sit down by myself and not care about life.

passage 5
I grew up in Bensonhurst,Brooklyn. When the holiday decorations went up,there were houses on my block with trees lit up for Christmas in front yards and behind living room windows.I was born in a Jewish family.Even though I received eight presents for Hanukkah (an eight﹣day Jewish holiday in November or December),it just wasn't fair.My friends had beautiful trees with lights and presents brought by a man in a red suit.I didn't have a tree, and I lived in an apartment building,so I had no chimney(烟囱).
That year, some neighbors bought a Christmas tree, but it was too tall for their living rooms,They cut off the top and, knowing I wanted to celebrate Christmas, gave the top to my family. After my parents fell asleep,I opened a window in our apartment.I imagined Santa could park his sleigh(雪橇) on our fire escape. When I woke up the next morning, the window was closed and Santa had delivered a present.I can't even remember what it was,but my memory of the morning lasts.
My relationship with Santa took a break until my daughter,Amanda, was born in 1992.My wife and I saw no reason to deprive(剥夺) her of meeting Santa. In 1998,a friend of mine portrayed(扮演) Santa at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan. He told me to stop by with my wife and daughter, and asked for their names in advance so he could greet them. When he saw us at the seaport,he greeted us by our names. My daughter's mouth opened wide and she pulled back.Maybe she was too young to appreciate this. But other families waiting to see him seemed delighted by his appearance and the gifts he brought.

passage 8
Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language.Mr Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
Download a Language Translation App
Mr Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them.Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with,or have difficulty pronouncing.
Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head,Mr Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in. "Gestures are all universally understood, " he said.
Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like "hello", "thank you" and "I'm sorry,I don't speak your language.Do you speak English?" is a must,Mr Thibault said.Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go,and at least enough to acknowledge that you don't know more,is a form of respect and will go a long way to be liked by locals.
Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you're headed to,and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with.Whenever Mr Thibault visits a new country,he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. "I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language," he said.
(1)In what situation should a language translation app be applied while traveling abroad?
A.When you have trouble pronouncing the words.
B.When you want to acknowledge your ignorance.
C.When you want to practice the local language.
D.When you feel uncomfortable in the country.
(2)What is the easiest way to communicate with foreigners according to the text?
A.Downloading a language translation app.
B.Learning a few key words.
C.Using body language.
D.Working with a guide.

passage 10
At one time, the Iroquois Indians lived along the lakes and rivers of the northern part of New York. The five tribes(部落)—the Mohawk,Oneida,Onondaga,Cayuga, and Seneca—fought with each other for years.
In the late 1500s,a wise Iroquois man named Dekanawida had a dream. In his dream,he saw the end of the Indian wars.An Onondaga chief named Hiawatha agreed to help Dekanawida bring peace to the area.Hiawatha traveled from tribe to tribe, trying to persuade the tribal leaders to unite in peace. The leaders realized that if they stopped fighting, they could become a powerful force in the Northeast area.
The leaders of the five tribes set up a league, called the Iroquois League, which brought all five tribes together. They set up a kind of democratic(民主的) government in which each tribe had an equal voice.A Great Council was formed.Forty﹣nine chiefs from every tribe were appointed to the Council. The members were all men,but they were chosen by the elder women of the tribes. The Council worked together to solve big issues for the league, while each tribe remained self﹣governing.
In 1722,the Iroquois League increased from five to six tribes when the Tuscarora tribe joined them. The Iroquois League controlled the fur trade in the area. They controlled land from Canada to Kentucky. The Iroquois League remained powerful for over 200 years.
Then during the War of Independence, most of the Iroquois League sided with the British. After the Americans defeated the British, many Iroquois villages were destroyed. The Iroquois were forced to move and live on reservations(印第安人居留地).This caused the Iroquois League to become less powerful.
History shows that the writers of the United States Constitution used some of the same ideas as the Iroquois League. One section of the Iroquois Constitution is entitled "Rights of the People" and might be compared to the "Bill of Rights".The Iroquois League's constitution is often called America's first democracy.
(1)According to the text,the Iroquois League .
