Elephants are the largest land animals alive today. African elephants live in family groups called herds. All of the elephants in the herd take care of each other. The leader of the herd is an old mother elephant. She is the matriarch (族长). A herd may have as few as eight or as many as 100 elephants.
The other elephants follow the matriarch because she knows how to keep them safe from coming danger. Elephants learn by watching and copying other elephants. Baby elephants stay with their mothers until they are fully grown at about ten years old. Elephants live to be 50 or 60 years old. Elephants are smart animals with long memories. In the dry season, a matriarch can remember where water was found in the past. The herd will follow her there. She can also remember the safest place for baby elephants to cross a fast-moving river.
Elephants talk to each other with rumbling sounds. Some rumbling sounds are so low and deep that people are unable to hear them. Elephants hear sounds not only with their ears, but also with their feet, and even trunks. They also greet each other by touching with their trunks and feet. If danger appears, mothers beat their ears to call their babies to come over to them.
Other animals don't usually attack (攻击) elephants. However, lions might try to attack a sick elephant or a baby elephant. If this happens, the adult elephants circle around the baby elephants. The adults make louder sounds and hit the ground with their trunks. The matriarch puts herself between the lion and the herd. She beats her ears out to make herself look even larger. Then she lowers her head and attacks the enemy in big cloud of dust.
1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. An elephant herd always has several leaders and hundreds of elephants.

D. Elephants can greet each other by touching their tails.

Your Internet experience is ruined when the net speed is too slow—it takes so long to open a web page and the show you're watching stops every few minutes. That can be very boring. But it could be a thing of the past. China's major telecom carriers (电信运营商) will start to provide 5 G services in China.
The "G" in 5G refers to the generations of mobile technologies. 1G let us talk to each other, 2G let us send messages, 3G gave us mobile data(数据) and the Internet, and 4G made all of these things faster.
Now 5G promises much faster speed, and more stable (稳定的) connections. This means that you will be able to download (下载) an entire HD movie in seconds and only experience a short delay(延迟) between sending and receiving data.
According to The Straits Times, 5G will be able to improve many advanced technologies. With a 5G network, the short delay in information exchange will allow driverless cars to run more safely, as they will be able to communicate in real time and avoid probable dangers. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled wearable products will keep doctors in touch with their patients and warn them immediately if there's something wrong. Besides, VR games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make games feel even more real.
But 5G is not perfect. For one thing, 5G will not "travel" far. On 4G networks, you can be 10 kilometers away from the nearest transmission base (传输基地). But 5G will only cover about 300 meters, meaning that we will need more transmission bases so that we can get signals. And in order to use 5G, we have to buy new products specifically designed for 5G that are expensive now.
1. The underlined word "ruined" here means "_____".
A. achieved B. expected C. broken D. improved
2. What can't we do with 5G?
A. Play games quickly and safely.
B. Experience more stable network connections.
C. Make VR games more popular.
D. Download an HD movie in seconds.
3. What can we conclude(推断) from the passage?
A. Fewer transmission bases will be needed in the near future.
B. New products designed for 5G are cheap now.
C. Many advanced technologies will be improved because of 5G.
D. There will be no delay in information exchange with 5G.
4. How far can you be away from the nearest transmission base if you use a 5G mobile phone?
A. About 3 kilometers. B. About 10 kilometers.
C. About 300 kilometers. D. About 300 meters.

Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, the way of paying has changed a lot. Although we have exchanged money around the world many times, we avoid the trouble of carrying a lot of cash (现金). We can pay anything with a credit card(信用卡) or by mobile phones. In fact, some people think we don't need money at all.
Before paper money, people bought and sold goods with animals. But they couldn't carry animals around their neck or in a bag, so they needed something small. About three thousand years ago, Chinese people used sea shells and later they used metal coins. These coins played an important role at that time.
In the thirteenth century, Marco Polo travelled to China. He saw paper money for the first time. Like paper money, checks(支票) were also useful and the Bank of England made the first checkbook in the nineteenth century. Then, in the early 1950s, the US introduced credit cards. This way of payment is still popular today.
However, we still need some cash for something special. I think paper money can make people feel warmer, and paper money cannot be replaced.
