Anyone watching the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China over the last few days has seen lots and lots of snow-man-made snow. Since the area gets little natural snow, this is the first time the Winter Olympics is taking place on almost 100% artificial snow.
This year’s Winter Olympics is being held in Beijing, China, and in two areas northwest of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. The areas get cold in the winter, but they don’t get a lot of snow. That’s because they’re not far from the Gobi Desert, and are generally very dry.
That meant some serious changes were needed to hold the Winter Olympics there. China took water from a reservoir which helps supply Beijing’s drinking water and sent it to a nearby river. To carry the water to the mountains for making snow, the country ran miles and miles of pipes. China says making the snow took about 49,000 gallons of water. Outside experts say it probably took a lot more water than that.
China hired an Italian company called TechnoAlpin to create the snow. TechnoAlpin created artificial snow at several earlier Winter Olympics. For the snow in this year’s Olympics, TechnoAlpin laid over 40 miles (64 kilometers) of pipe and brought in hundreds of snow-making machines. Even with all of those machines, making the snow for this year’s Games took seven weeks.
In recent years, it has become more and more common to use artificial snow at winter sports events. That’s true even in places that used to have a lot of snow naturally. Some artificial snow was used in the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 because of warm weather. In the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, roughly 90% of the snow was man-made. As the world warms because of climate change, problems like this are expected to become far more common. Michael Mayr, who leads TechnoAlpin in Asia, says, “You could not have winter sports now without man-made snow.”
4. Why artificial snow is needed for the Winter Olympics in Beijing?
A. Because it’s not cold enough in the area.
B. Because there is little water in the air in the area.
C. Because the world climate changes.
D. Because the competitors perform better on artificial snow.
5. Which of the following statements is right about making artificial snow?
A. Sending water to a river is the first step.
B. Taking water from a reservoir is the second step.
C. Before arriving at mountains, water is sent through pipes.
D. By using pipes, water won’t be wasted.
6. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The places that have much natural snow don’t need artificial snow.
B. With proper preparing work, it doesn’t take much time to make artificial snow.
C. TechnoAlpin has lots of experience to make artificial snow.
D. Experts have calculated the exact amount of water needed to make artificial snow.
7. What is the author’s attitude to making artificial snow for Winter Olympics?
A Opposed. B. Unconcerned. C. Enthusiastic. D. Objective.

Harry Burleigh was reported missing on the evening of May 7 by his wife, Stacy, after he failed to return home from a camping trip in the Toketee area. Search and rescue crews from out of the area began looking for Burleigh on the morning of May 8. They found his vehicle near a lower trailhead that leads into Twin Lakes and determined the fisherman may have tried to walk to Twin Lakes to fish before heading home. His worried wife made signs and left food along the trails in hopes he would find them.
On May 16,they had a big break when searchers found a fishing box and makeshift(临 的) shelter. “They left him a note and lighter and told him to make a fire and they would be back in to get him tomorrow,” Stacey wrote on Facebook, “It took the team another 6 hours to get out.”
A week later, on May 23, rescuers discovered’ a second makeshift shelter southwest of the original one. The search crews called out to Burleigh who responded back. He was found to be 'walking and complaining of minor pain, but was in stable condition. Burleigh was examined at the hospital and reunited with his family that evening. “This wàs the outcome that we all have been looking for in this case,” said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Brad O’Dell, “The Sheriff's Office wants to thank everyone who was involved in this mission.”
O’Dell said temperatures in the area got down into the 20s, and even snowed. “He told the searchers yesterday that he kept doing this 'one day at a time, one step at a time for love for his family and everything else,” O’Dell said, “So that mindset, that winning mindset, I think played a big role.”
8. Why did Harry Burleigh probably have the camping trip?

Due to the effects of climate change, new species of birds are coming to the UK.A recent study by the RSPB and Durham University has found that European birds have been migrating further north by an average of 300 miles. While fewer birds, such as the tufted duck, are returning for the winter months, there has been an increase in other species as they seek a new holiday home or a quiet stop-off!
It's thought that in the UK, we will gain many more species than we'll lose through climate change -a 3°C change won't affect the migrations of most birds, so birds such as robins, blackbirds, blue tits and greenfinches will still be regular visitors to our gardens. Climate change has been affecting domestic birds though-the Dartford warbler, a species that was literally down to just a couple of pairs in the UK in the 1960s, has been spreading further north from it’s traditional home in south-east England. Other birds such as green woodpeckers and nuthatches have already been regular visitors to the country, but have now started to spread further north, with some even going as far as northern England.
Scops owls have also been regular visitors, mostly in the south of England. And over the next 50 years or so, these visitors will eventually start to settle in the UK as they continue to· breed(繁殖)and adapt themselves to the conditions.
Other birds are, for the moment, just passing through on their migration, using the UK as a pitstop. The exotic-looking hoopoe - a striking black-and-white-winged bird, the size of a mistle thrush----regularly passes England's south coast and, although it doesn't breed here, up to 100 of them can turn up during the spring.
As climate change continues, there's nothing to suggest that these birds won't continue to breed northwards during the next decade and spotting them will become a regular occurrence throughout the country.
12. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. There are fewer birds in the UK due to the climate change.
B. Birds won't be affected by temperature change within 3°
C. It may get warmer than before in the north of the UK.
D Birds in the UK don't need migrations any more.
13. Which birds are expected to live in the UK in the future?
A. Scops owls. B. Robins. C. Dartford warbler. D. Hoopoe.
14. What dóes the underlined word “pitstop” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Garage. B. Gas station. C. Resting place. D. Nest.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Birds visit the UK regularly in winter.
B. Climate change is affecting the population and migrations of birds in the UK.
C. Birds start to inhabit the northern parts of the UK.
D The population of birds in the world is on the increase due to the climate change.
