    La Tour Eiffel

This iron tower is the very symbol of Paris itself, and it attracts nearly seven million visitors each year. The tower was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World Exposition to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution. It towers over the city at 324 metres and weighs over 10, 000 tons, making it both a magnificent monument and an engineering wonder.

Address: Parc du Champ de Mars, Paris

    Opening hours: Daily 9 a.m-12:45 a.m.

    Tour Montparnasse

Built in the second half of the 20th century, the 689-foot tall Montparnasse Tower, also called the "Tour Maine-Montparnasse", is Paris' only skyscraper, standing at 59 storeys tall (plus 6 underground levels). Cheese and Wine Workshops

Immerse yourself in the art of making cheese in Paris. Every workshop here is newly-built and followed by an amazing cheese and wine tasting, and teaches you, after making the cheese yourself, how to pair the right kind of cheese with the respective and most suitable wine. Absolutely a great experience for food lovers.

Address: Rue du Faubourg du Temple 40, Paris on weekdays and Rue de la Croix Nivert 223 on weekends.

    Le Marais

Le Marais is a historic district situated on the Right Bank of the Seine, spread across the 3rd and 4th Arrondissements. Music can have a profound effect on both emotions and bodies. Faster music can make you feel more alert and concentrate better. Upbeat music can make you feel more optimistic and positive about life. A slower tempo can quiet your mind and relax your muscles, making you feel comforted while releasing the stress of the day. Music is effective for relaxation and stress management.

Research confirms these personal experiences with music. Current findings indicate that music around 60 beats per minute can cause the brain to agree with the beat causing alpha brainwave. This alpha brainwave is what is present when we are relaxed and conscious. To cause sleep, a person may need to devote at least 45 minutes, in a relaxed position, listening to calming music. Researchers at Stanford University have said that "Listening to music seems to be able to change brain functioning to the same extent as medication." They noted that music is something that almost anybody can access and makes it an easy stress reduction tool.

So what type of music reduces stress the best? A bit surprising is that Native American, Celtic, Indian stringed-instruments, drums, and flutes are very effective at relaxing the mind even when played loud. Sounds of rain, thunder, and nature sounds may also be relaxing particularly when mixed with other music, such as light jazz and classical.

Since with music we are rarely told the beats per minute, how do you choose the relaxation music that is best for you? The answer partly rests with you: You must first like the music being played, and then it must relax you. Forcing yourself to listen to relaxation music can create tension, instead of reducing stress. It is important to remember that quieting your mind does not mean you will automatically feel sleepy. It means your brain and body are relaxed, and with your new calm self, you can then function at your best in many activities.

    24. What's the purpose of the text?

    A. To report.       B. To explain.      C. To discuss.      D. To compare.

    25. What can you infer from the research?

    A. Calming music helps people sleep.

    B. Listening to music cures people like medicine.

    C. Music about 60 beats contributes to a good sleep.

    D. Anybody can listen to music and reduce their stress.

    26. What type of music or sounds is best for reducing anxiety?

    A. Light jazz.      B. Loud music.      C. Classical music.      D. Nature sounds.

    27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Choosing the Music You Like       B. Having A Good Sleep with Music

    C. Releasing Stress through Music      D. Exercising Your Brain by Listening to Music

    C

When you hear about artificial intelligence, stop imagining that computers can do everything we can do but better. Based upon a new research made by Cade Metz, A.I. technology is promising but has its downsides: It's currently less capable than people, and it is being coded with human bias(偏见).

Artificial intelligence is a term for a collection of concepts that allow computer systems to work like the brain. It's a neural network and a mathematical system that can analyze data and patterns. If you take thousands of cat photos and feed them into a neural network, for instance, it can learn to recognize the patterns that define what a cat looks like.

The first neural networks were built in the 1950s, but for decades they never really achieved their promise. For decades, neural networks had two significant limitations: not enough data and not enough computer processing power. Decades later, the Internet gave us large amounts of data, and eventually scientists had enough computing power to process it all.

Sometimes people talk about artificial intelligence as if it's a magic. When we hear the term, we imagine a computer that can do anything. That wasn't the case in the 1950s, and it's not true now. People don't realize how hard it is to imitate human reasoning and our ability to deal with uncertainty. A self-driving car can recognize what's around it-in some ways better than people can. But it doesn't work well enough to drive anywhere at any time or do what you and I do, like reaction to something surprising on the road. Besides, the machines will be capable of generating misinformation at a massive scale. There won't be any way to tell what's real online and what's fake. And the scariest thing is that some neural networks learn from massive amounts of information on the Internet-and that information was created by people. That means we are building computer systems that exhibit human bias-against women and people of color, for instance.

    28. What does the underlined word "downsides" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A. opportunities       B. coincidence      C. circumstances       D. shortcomings

    29. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

    A. The advantages of A.I.        B. The definition of A.I.

    C. The disadvantages of A.I.      D. The definition of neural network.

    30. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Driverless cars drive better than people.

    B. Computers are capable of doing anything.

    C. All the information on the Internet is not real.

    D. Computers have the power of reasoning and solving problems.

    31. What does the author think of artificial intelligence?

    A. It's hard and uncertain.               B. It's all talk and useless.

    C. It's of some help with many limitations.  D. It's the most scariest thing and usually causes bias.

    D

Twenty years ago, the sheep Dolly was born, becoming the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. Dolly lived for 6.5 years and developed osteoarthritis(关节炎)late in life.

Researchers analyzed her cells and found that her genetic age was actually older than her 6.5 years.

In a recent study in Nature Communications, scientists report that four of Dolly's "sister clones"-sheep born from the same cell line as Dolly-have normal blood pressure and insulin(胰岛素)levels for sheep of their age. Kevin Sinclair, a biologist, says the sister clones, who are now the age equal to 70 human years, actually seem to be in relatively good shape. "They're what we would call gene copies-they share the same DNA, the same cells that gave rise to Dolly," Sinclair says, "And their physical health is very good."

Sinclair says scientists who study cloning have changed their focus from where it was 20 years ago, when Dolly was born, and are now concentrating more on IPS cells(诱导多能干细胞). "The field has moved a little bit away from cloning towards these IPS cells," Sinclair says, "I think that's where most of the activity is likely to be in the future. There are two or three labs that are cloning human embryos for medical purposes."

There have been other changes for cloning since Dolly, and Sinclair says that is a good sign for the success of future experiments. "Cloning is still undertaken, particularly in the United States, and the today it is much more efficient," Sinclair adds, "So we can be hopeful, with the research that's taking place, that in the future we could maybe see more healthy cloned animals like this."

    32. What happened to the sheep Dolly according to the text?

    A. It died of illness.                  B. It suffered from a disease late in life.

    C. It lived longer than other sheep.      D. It's the first cloned animal in the world.

    33. What can we know about Dolly's sister clones?

    A. They have high blood pressure.        B. They come from the same farm.

    C. They have lived for seventy years.      D. They are all of a cell line with Dolly.

    34. What's the current concentration of scientists according to Sinclair?

    A. IPS cells.    B. DNA research.   C. The cloning technology.    D. Human embryos study.

    35. What's Sinclair's attitude towards cloning according to the passage?

    A. Confident.      B. Uncertain.      C. Uncaring.      D. Disappointed.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Making new friends can be challenging for some people, but it's definitely rewarding.   36   They are the ones who walk through life together, share our ups and downs, and pains and joys. If you take a look at the people who seem to make friends easily, you may find that their social skills were likely all picked up over time. For this same reason, you can learn to become more sociable through time and practice. Here are my personal tips to get new friends:

Realize your fear is in your head

The first step is to develop a healthy mental image of meeting new people. Some of us see meeting new people as a scary event. We are concerned about making a good impression. The more we think about it, the scarier it seems.   37   Therefore, there is no need to worry about them.

       38

Don't change yourself to make new friends. That's the worst thing you can do. Just be yourself. That way, potential new friends will know you as you, and they'll use that to decide if they want to take the friendship a step further. It's all about being you. The truest friendships are built with both parties accepting each other for who they are.

    Be there for them

A friendship is a supportive union between two people. Be there for your friends where you can. When you help your friends, don't do so with the expectation of being helped next time.   39   I find that the satisfaction I get from helping others and knowing they are better off is a reward greater than anything I can get in return.

Make the effort to stay in touch

Continual effort is required to maintain the friendship. Ask your friends out every once in a while.   40   For some of my best friends, we meet only once every few months. Yet, there's never any doubt that we're closely connected and we will be there for each other when needed.

    A. Be yourself

    B. Change yourself

    C. Instead, help unconditionally.

    D. You can learn a lot from a good friend.

    E. Actually, all these fears are just in our head.

    F. After all, friends form a big part of our life for most of us.

    G. The strength of your relationship is not measured by how frequently you meet.
