    三、阅读理解

    A

The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule. Between 221 and 210 B C, he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers (士兵). These, he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.

    Lost in Time

The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white and purple. Sadly, most of the colours did not last to the present day. After being exposed (暴露) to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.

    New Technology

Now new technology is starting to show the army's true colours. Archeologists (考古学家) have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and German researchers have developed a chemical liquid (液体) to help save the soldiers' colours. After finding a soldier or another art piece, archeologists put the liquid on it. They then cover it in plastic.

    Back to Life

Archeologists are also finding colours in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with the dirt, so the colours won't be lost. "We are treating the dirt as an art piece," says Rong Bo, the museum's leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo, is to find a way to use the colours on to the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colours.

Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives.

He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied Science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.

Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it "talk" to other computers?

There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.

Tim Berners-Lee doesn't think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.

Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

( )27. What was Tim Berners-Lee interested in?

    A. Looking for jobs in different cities.     B. Talking to people around the world.

    C. Studying how to connect computers.    D. Exploring how to improve memory.

( )28. The underlined word "It" in Paragraph 3 refers to "_________"

    A. Working on early computers

    B. Connecting different facts together

    C. Travelling to the office in Switzerland

    D. Repeating the answers to the same questions

( )29.In what order did the following events take place?

    a. Tim worked in England.           b. Tim worked in Switzerland.

    c. Tim made his first computer.       d. Tim invented the World Wide Web.

    e. Tim studied Science at Oxford University.

    A. c-e-d-a-b        B. e-b-a-c-d        C. c-d-a-e-b        D. e-c-a-b-d

( )30. What does the writer think of Tim Berners-Lee?

    A. He is not famous because he is not rich.

    B. He has changed our lives and he is great.

    C. He did nothing special but made people a good life.

    D. He has made great achievements in memory research.

    四、信息还原

"How are you?"is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use.  31   It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks "How are you?" expects to hear the answer "Fine." even if the person isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine." isn't really an answer.  32

33   For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person may be thinking, "No, I don't. I think you are wrong."It isn't polite to disagree very strongly, so he might say, "I am not so sure." This is a nice way to say that you don't agree with someone.

People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says "I've got to go now." or the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as "Someone is at the door." or "Something is burning on the stove."  34  The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking.  35  And it's part of the game of language.

    A. Sometimes, people don't say exactly what they mean.

    B. It's very good not to tell the truth to our family.

    C. However, "How are you?" is also an unusual question.

    D. The excuse may be real, or not.

    E. They are simply other ways of saying "hello" or "hi".

    F. If you disagree with others, they will hate you.

    G. It is an important way people try to be nice to each other.

Families in most countries have a special day to celebrate mothers. In Serbia, this day is on  52 second Sunday before Christmas. 七、阅读表达

Mark Twain is one of the most quoted authors ever. There are hundreds of his quotations (语录) on posters and websites. Here is an example:

"If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything."                                                 --- Mark Twain

Quotations like this one give us guidance. It reminds us that telling a lie is much more difficult than telling the truth. Telling a lie means you have to remember what you said each time you tell the lie. If you tell the truth, there is nothing to remember. He suggests that you shouldn't lie not because it is wrong, but because it is hard work. Here is another example.

"Always obey your parents when they are present."

    --- Mark Twain

Again, the quotation give good advice---to always obey your parents, but the humourous part is when they are present. The quotation tells you to obey your parents when they are there with you---because they can see what you are doing.

Albert Einstein's quotations are also popular. Many of his quotations are inspirational (鼓舞人心的). This means that they help us to do our best and be the best person we can be. Here is an example:

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning. "

    ---Albert Einstein

This is a much more serious quotation than the two Mark Twain ones. It gives us a lot to think about. Also, because this was said by Albert Einstein, it makes us want to take the quotation serious. This quotation gives us hope that we can learn from any mistake we made yesterday. It reminds us to always look closely at everything we do and ask the right questions to help us achieve our best.

    61. According to Mark Twain, why shouldn't we tell a lie?

    62. What's the purpose of not to stop questioning?

    63. Among the three quotations above, which one impresses you most? Why?
